Jerez MotoGP: Casey Stoner fastest after late crash

Casey Stoner’s bid to claim his first ever victory at the Jerez circuit in Spain got off to a mixed start today.
The Australian ended the session with the fastest time having impressively led the way from only his second lap.
But he suffered a late crash on his factory Ducati GP10 when he lost the front at the Angel Nieto corner with just over two minutes remaining.
Stoner walked away unhurt and his best lap of 1.39.731 set on only his fourth lap ensured he claimed top spot as the MotoGP world championship started its crucial European sector.
Stoner was typically dominant at the start of the session and after only two laps he was more than half-a-second clear of the field.

Less than ten minutes had elapsed and he was close to a second faster than his rivals before the field slowly starting to reel in the 2007 world champion.
Fiat Yamaha rider and home favourite Jorge Lorenzo spearheaded the challenge as he spent the majority of the session chipping away at Stoner’s advantage.
By the end the Spaniard, who has been on pole position at Jerez in 2008 and ’09, got to within 0.144s of Stoner as he completed a 30-lap stint – more than any other rider.

Nicky Hayden’s brilliant fourth place in the season’s opening race in Qatar appears not to have been a fluke as the American’s impressive form continued this afternoon in mild conditions at the Andalucian circuit.
The Kentucky rider was never outside of the top five on the timesheets and a late burst saw him leapfrog Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa into third spot.
Hayden logged a best time of 1.40.148 to finish 0.417s adrift of Stoner but 0.052s clear of an improving Pedrosa on the Repsol Honda RC212V.

Reigning world champion Rossi had to settle for fifth as he looked troubled by the on-going right shoulder injury he suffered in a motocross training accident earlier this month.
The Italian finished with a best time of 1.40.359 to finish 0.628s slower than Stoner.

Loris Capirossi was sixth on the factory Suzuki GSV-R but the last rider to lap inside of a second of Stoner.
Reigning World Superbike champion Ben Spies made an encouraging start on his first appearance at the Jerez track.
The Spanish circuit is one of nine tracks that Spies has never raced on before but he clocked a best time of 1.41.200 to finish only 1.469s off Stoner.
That time secured Spies a creditable 11th place on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1 machine and he was only 0.010s behind tenth placed Marco Melandri.

Spaniard Hector Barbera finished in an impressive eighth position on the Aspar Ducati, despite a small crash at the final corner in the early stages.
And Alvaro Bautista shrugged off an off-track excursion to finish in ninth on the Rizla Suzuki GSV-R

Jerez MotoGP: Dani Pedrosa claims shock pole position

By Matthew Birt - MCN

A rejuvenated Dani Pedrosa stormed to a shock pole position for his home race in Jerez tomorrow after a thrilling qualifying session for the Spanish MotoGP race.

Just over one second split the top 11 on the grid but the field being headed by Pedrosa’s Repsol Honda RC212V was the first big shock of the 2010 campaign.

The Spaniard had appeared stuck in a crisis going into this weekend’s Spanish MotoGP, with the triple world champion struggling to master handling on his factory V4 after he slumped to seventh in the season's opening race in Qatar.

But a new chassis with revised stiffness seems to have galvanised Pedrosa, who has been on the podium in Jerez every year since 2005.
He clocked a best time of 1.39.202 in the final four minutes to beat compatriot and bitter rival Jorge Lorenzo by 0.285s.

Fiat Yamaha rider Lorenzo was always a contender for his third successive MotoGP pole position in Jerez but his best lap of 1.39.487 was only good enough for second.

Factory Ducati rider Casey Stoner bounced back from his late crash in practice yesterday to claim the final place on the front row of the grid. The Aussie logged a best time of 1.39.511 to claim third in the final two minutes.

A late charge on soft Bridgestone tyres failed to secure Valentino Rossi a front row slot as the Italian had to settle for fourth place.
The 31-year-old led for long periods in the hour-long session before his on-going right shoulder injury looked to be taking its toll as he dropped down the rankings to sixth.
A best lap of 1.39.558 on his final lap though elevated Rossi to fourth and he missed the front row by just 0.047s.

Nicky Hayden restored some of his battered confidence with a brave ride to fifth. The American had suffered a monstrous crash during this morning’s second free practice session and in the early stages he found it difficult to find any consistent speed.
But a lap of 1.39.560 put Hayden in fifth on the grid as he was ended just 0.002s behind Rossi.

Randy de Puniet put in another impressive performance to finish second Honda with a lap of 1.39.591 securing him sixth on the grid. The Frenchman had put the LCR Honda machine as high as second at one stage.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 duo Colin Edwards and Ben Spies will start next to each other on the third row.
Edwards recovered from a sluggish start on his YZR-M1 machine to log the seventh best time. The Texan’s best of 1.39.970 edged out Spies in eighth by 0.019s.

Qatar podium finisher Andrea Dovizioso was ninth with Marco Melandri rounding out the top ten.

It already has! Round 1 at Qatar was an awesome race to watch. I really hope Elias takes the title and moves back up to MotoGP.

Any ways, can't wait to watch the races tomorrow.

WOOWWW! 3 awesome races!

125 was typical 125, passes at every corner. I'm surprised that that's Espagaro's 3rd win. Thought he had way more than that.

Moto2 was the race of the day for me, superb racing and had me on the edge of my seat for the whole race! Bit disappointed for Kenny Noyes that he couldn't get on the podium but was amazing to watch!

MotoGP was quite boring until Lorenzo caught the leaders, was great to see a Pedorsa vs Lorenzo scrap as you can tell they both hate each other's guts. And Lorenzo's swim was amazing :D

Jerez MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo claims stunning late win

By Matthew Birt - MCN

Jorge Lorenzo seized the lead in the MotoGP world championship after claiming a stunning late victory in his home race at Jerez today.

The Fiat Yamaha rider fought back superbly from a distant fifth in the early stages to snatch the lead from bitter Spanish rival Dani Pedrosa on the final lap at the Curva Dry Sack.

Lorenzo then comfortably streaked away from Pedrosa to claim his sixth MotoGP victory and his first since the Estoril clash in Portugal last season.

The double world 250GP champion first started his charge to the front on lap five when he snatched fourth from a disappointing Casey Stoner.

He needed another five laps to dispose of Stoner’s factory Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden before he embarked on a brilliant pursuit of title rival Valentino Rossi and long-time leader Pedrosa.
With six laps remaining Lorenzo had trailed Pedrosa by over two seconds but he started his attack when he claimed second from Rossi on lap 22.

He tried twice unsuccessfully on the penultimate lap to move by Pedrosa, who had led the entire race having grabbed the holeshot from pole position.
Lorenzo attacked at the end of the back straight and made his pass stick and he was never under threat from a counter attack by Pedrosa, who 0.543s adrift in second.

With Pedrosa fading in the closing stages, Rossi almost fought back to claim second but he was only able to get within 0.347s of Pedrosa at the conclusion to the 27-lap race.

Hayden claimed his second successive fourth place as he was unable to stay with the leading trio, though he held off a determined late challenge from Stoner.
The Aussie was never in contention and he had to settle for a disappointing fifth and he’s already 34-points adrift in the title hunt, with just four-points splitting Lorenzo and Rossi.

Andrea Dovizioso rounded out the top six with Loris Capirossi crashing out on the second lap at the final corner.

Texan Ben Spies had a disastrous afternoon after an undiagnosed front tyre issue cost him the chance of claiming a second successive top five finish.
Spies was sixth on lap one and looking menacing behind Stoner when he suddenly started to plummet down the field.
After dropping outside of the top ten as he struggled to lap within 2.5s off the leading group, Spies retired at the end of lap eight.

Valentino Rossi heads first practice

By Matthew Birt -MCN

21 May 2010 14:27

Reigning MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi left it late to top the timesheets at the end of opening practice for the French GP at Le Mans this afternoon.
The Italian looked like he might have to settle for third position behind 2007 world champion Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo when he seized top spot with a brilliant last lap on board Yamaha’s factory YZR-M1.
Rossi, who had dominated the early stages of the session, posted a best time of 1.34.402 to edge out Australian Stoner by just 0.106s.
Stoner clocked a best time of 1.34.508 while using new triple clamps on his factory Ducati GP10 and he beat Lorenzo into third by 0.034s.

The Spaniard, who holds a slender four-point lead over Rossi going into the third race on Sunday, also spent a spell at the top of the timesheets but he ended with a 1.34.542.
Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso was fourth quickest and only 0.083s slower than Lorenzo with team-mate Dani Pedrosa a further 0.364s adrift in fifth place.

Colin Edwards, who has claimed two of his 11 MotoGP podium finishes at the Le Mans circuit, was sixth quickest on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Yamaha with fellow American Nicky Hayden in seventh.
Ben Spies impressed again on his first experience of the iconic Le Mans track. The reigning World Superbike champion posted a best time of 1.35.291 to finish just 0.889s off Rossi’s impressive pace.
Spies was just 0.068s behind Hayden in a session that was run in hot conditions.

Spaniard Alvaro Bautista had a gruelling afternoon in front of a decent Friday crowd.
The factory Suzuki rider was not surprisingly 17th and last as he rode his GSV-R just a week after having a plate and six screws inserted in his left shoulder following a motocross training accident.
The former 125GP world champion ended with a best time of 1.37.525 that was over three seconds off the pace.

Valentino Rossi storms to pole

Reigning world champion Valentino Rossi claimed his first pole position of the 2010 MotoGP campaign in Le Mans this afternoon.
In an exciting climax to the decisive qualifying session, 31-year-old Rossi topped the timesheets with a best lap of 1.33.408 on his 28th of 30 laps.
Just over 90 seconds remained when the Fiat Yamaha surged to the top for the first time in over 20 minutes. And team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was unable to counter attack in the final moments.
Lorenzo finished second to maintain his 100 per cent front row starting record in 2010 and he was just 0.054s adrift of Rossi with a best time of 1.33.462.
Lorenzo will start tomorrow’s 28-lap race holding a slender four-point lead over Rossi in the early title hunt and he is aiming for a second successive triumph in Le Mans.

Completing the front row is Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa. The Spaniard might have thought a second straight pole position was his when he occupied the top spot with just over two minutes remaining.
The triple world champion, who was a morale-boosting second in Jerez earlier this month, ended third with a best time of 1.33.573 to finish just 0.165s off pole.

Aussie Casey Stoner missed the front row of the grid for the first time this season as the factory Ducati rider had to settle for fourth place on the GP10 machine.
Stoner too had spells at the top of the timesheets throughout the session and he was quickest with just seven minutes remaining.
But a best lap of 1.33.824 was 0.416s slower than Rossi and 0.251s away from preserving his 2010 front row starting record.

Factory Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden ended in an impressive fifth place on a Le Mans track that he has a dire record on.
The American looked like pulling off a shock when he followed Pedrosa in the closing stages to claim the third best time with over three minutes left on the clock.
A best lap of 1.33.845 eventually secured him fifth spot to equal his best qualifying result of the season.

Home favourite Randy de Puniet ended in sixth position with Andrea Dovizioso seventh.
Colin Edwards will start from the front of the third row in eighth as the Texan slipped down the rankings in the crucial final stages.
Edwards did lead the way with 25 minutes remaining when riders starting switching to the softer compound Bridgestone tyres, but a lap of 1.34.304 left him 0.896s off pole.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Ben Spies faces a tough French MotoGP debut after he ended qualifying in 12th place.
The reigning World Superbike champion suffered a left foot injury in a massive high-side crash during this morning’s final practice session.
He was passed fit and rode without the aid of painkillers and for a while he looked certain to claim a hard fought top ten.
But a best time of 1.34.920 left him over 1.5s away from Rossi.

Tomorrow’s race will only feature 16 riders after Alvaro Bautista withdrew because of a massive crash in the second practice session.

Awesome to see Nicky right up doing the exact same time as Stoner, first time Stoner has ever had real competition with a teammate in Moto GP. I sense a Rossi win tomorrow, or maybe Lorenzo might snatch it. Either way, it'll most likely be a Yamaha 1-2

Jorge Lorenzo cruises to victory

By Matthew Birt -MCN

Jorge Lorenzo strengthened his early 2010 MotoGP world title bid with a crushing victory at Le Mans this afternoon.
The Spaniard romped to his second successive triumph at the iconic French venue having streaked away from Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi with ease shortly before the halfway stage of the 28-lap race.
Lorenzo was happy to stalk Rossi for the opening 12 laps after the Italian had made a stunning start from pole position.
Lorenzo, who also won the recent Spanish GP in Jerez, did momentarily lead going into the first chicane on lap eight.
But 31-year-old Rossi mounted an immediate counter attack and regained the lead.
But Rossi’s fears that his damaged right shoulder would suffer after ten to 12 laps came true as he suddenly dropped off the pace once Lorenzo made his move on the 12th lap.
The 23-year attacked again at the first chicane and within two laps he’d managed to open up a 0.640s lead on reigning world champion Rossi.
Signs that Rossi was struggling with the shoulder he damaged in a motocross training accident last month were obvious on lap 15 when he suddenly slipped 1.505s behind his team-mate.
And on lap 16 Lorenzo was able to extend his lead by another 1.6s as Rossi faded quickly to a distant second.
Lorenzo was left to cruise to the 28th victory of his career and crucially opened up his early championship lead to nine-points over Rossi.

Rossi was 5.672s back but able to ride to a relatively comfortable second place with Repsol Honda duo Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso unable to challenge him.
Pedrosa was right in the battle for the lead in the early exchanges before he dropped back into the clutches of Italian team-mate Dovizioso.
Spaniard Pedrosa managed to resist intense pressure from Dovizioso until the final lap when the former world 125GP champion attacked at the first chicane.
Pedrosa then ran wide trying to retaliate at the Musee right-hander to give Nicky Hayden a sniff of his third successive fourth place in 2010.
And Pedrosa made another blunder on the brakes in the final section to let Hayden through.

Marco Melandri rounded out the top six with a fine performance riding his Gresini Honda rider on Showa suspension for the first time since last November.

Big shock of the day was another early crash from Australian rider Casey Stoner.
The 24-year-old is already facing a massive mountain to climb to win his first world title since 2007 after he lost the front of his factory Ducati on lap three while he was in fourth place at the Garage Vert right-hander.
His second crash in the opening three races has already cut Stoner a massive 59-points adrift of series leader Lorenzo and he is only 13th in the overall standings.
Stoner looked stunned in the Ducati garage as he tried to come to terms with the latest crash.

American Ben Spies had a nightmare weekend. Struggling with a badly swollen left foot after a huge practice crash yesterday, the Texan crashed out on lap seven while holding 11th place for his second successive non-finish.

Hutchinson fast in first TT practice

By Gary Pinchin - MCN

Practice started this week and the race's starts on saturday on the awesomly fast island............

Ian Hutchinson set the pace in (Monday’s) first timed practice session of the 2010 TT.
Conditions were near perfect as he lapped at 128.302mph to top the leaderboard with the Padgetts Honda and said: “There you go. People have been telling my I can only ride around here on a supersport bike or a stocker. Hopefully this will put them right.”
Hutchinson was also fourth quickest on his superstock bike and said: “I’m really happy. That’s a great start to the job.” He didn’t go out on the 600.

Cameron Donald – coming off a disappointingly quiet North West 200 – showed his true colours with second fastest superbike time of the night with a lap of 127.274mph on the Relentless by TAS Suzuki.
John McGuinness was third quickest with a lap of 127.090mph on his HM Plant Hondas superbike and did 123.523mph on the Padgetts Honda stocker to go second in that class to, behind Ryan Farquhar on the KMR Kawasaki. He also posted fourth best time in Supersport with a 120.289mph.

McGuinness said: “That was a fairly usual first night out at the TT. You get your head blown of by the wind and arm-pump through hanging on too tight! My superbike was great as you would expect.
"The stocker was like it always is, key in the ignition and go and the supersport was just a tad over-geared.”

Guy Martin was also impressive with a 127.056mph lap on the Wilson Craig Honda superbike to go fourth. And was also third in Superstock with a 124.582mph lap.
Adrian Archibald and Bruce Anstey completed the top six.
Keith Amor posted 11th quickest time in his debut on the HM Plant Honda he is riding in place of the injured Steve Plater. He went 122.787mph and said: “I wanted to take my time to not only get used to the HM Plant Honda, but also get re-acquainted with the bike.

Behind Farquhar is Superstock was Michael Dunlop on the Hunts Motorcycles with a lap of 124.810. But also clocking 124mph laps were Martin and McGuinness.
Dunlop topped the Supersport times with a lap of 123.960 but he wasn’t entirely happy with his evening.
“I’ve got to ride harder,” he moaned. “The 600 is okay but I’d be happier with 126mph…..The stocker and my superbike are wheelying to much and are a weaving around a wee bit so we’ve got to do some work on them to find more stability.”

Brother William was third quickest having revamped his CD Racing Yamaha since the North West where it was nowhere near the pace.
Olie Linsdell departure from the pits on his lap aboard Moto2 FTR that he intends racing in the Senior, perked everyone up as he wailed off down towards Bray Hill. The bike has retained the same open exhaust that’s permitted in Moto2. He clocked a lap time of 115.026mph.

Isle of Man TT practice: Hutchinson still the man to beat

By Gary Pinchin - MCN
TT & road races
02 June 2010 09:19

Ian Hutchinson continues to be the man setting the pace at this year’s TT.
After rain earlier in the day, the weather brightened up, though there were still damp patches out on the course, the lap times were still impressive.
Hutchinson clocked 128.017mph to top the Superbike class on the Padgetts Honda and was also the quickest in the Superstock at 126.339.

Cameron Donald was again impressive on the Relentless by TAS Suzuki with second quickest time at 127.212mph, with team-mate Bruce Anstey third with a 126.919 lap.
The lap speeds in general were a bit down on the previous evening, not just because of the damp patches but also because the earlier rain had brought dirt onto the track.
And the riders had to cope with low sun blinding them one second and darkness under the trees the next.

Guy Martin was fourth quickest of the superbikes at 126.752 on the Wilson Craig Honda while Keith Amor was finally starting to flow with the HM Plant Honda with fifth best time of 126.043mph.
Michael Dunlop was sixth quickest at 125.668mph on his Robinson Concrete/Uel Duncan Honda, 1.28s ahead of John McGuinness.

Dunlop again topped the Supersport class with a lap of 122.728, closely followed by Keith Amor who was having his first run-out on the Kojak Racing Honda. He did 122.649mph.
Conor Cummins was third in Supersport. He parked up his McAdoo Kawasaki for the night and concentrated on the 600 (and had a problem with the airbox) and superstock bikes – and wound up second quickest in the latter.

Michael Rutter posted an impressive 125.429mph lap on the HM Plant Honda – but was still saying he needed more time on track before he felt he could really commit to the corners.
Adrian Archibald, like Cummins, parked his superbike and concentrated on the other two bikes. He posted fourth quickest in superstock (and sixth with his supersport Yamaha) but admitted he was shaving some stability problems with the GSX-R1000.

Best newcomer was again David Johnson was a massively impressive 116.284mph in only his second evening on the course with the DP Coldplaning Honda. Stephen Thompson clocked 114.293mph on thepeoplesbike.com Suzuki.

The weather was perfect, there were only damp patches reported at Quarry Bends and everyone was tipping McGuinness for some hot laps in tonight’s practice (Wednesday). He didn’t disappoint.
His standing start lap on the HM Plant Honda was 129.265mph. And his flying lap yielded a 130.242. It was the first 130mph lap of this year’s TT and in doing so McGuinness hammered out a warning to all his rivals that he’s going to take some beating this year.

At his first attempt tonight, Monday and Tuesday’s pacesetter Ian Hutchinson was unhappy with his Padgetts Honda handling after some overnight changes but after reverting back to Tuesday’s settings, he banged in a 129.14mph, second fastest of the night.

Guy Martin was on fire straight off, aboard the Wilson Craig Honda with a 129.14mph standing start lap but he pulled off at Quarterbridge, robbing him any chance of toppling McGuinness. He still finished third overall.

Adrian Archibald was again impressive on his three-year old AMA Racing GSX-R1000 with a lap of 128.618 – to make him the top Suzuki on the night. Cameron Donald clocked fifth quickest time on the Relentless by TAS Suzuki with a 128.011mph lap while Bruce Anstey clocked 127.915mph for seventh – both Suzuki riders pulling off after the first lap to make changes to their machines. The team had lengthened their wheelbase to improve stability but upset the machine in other areas.

Sandwiched between the Suzukis in sixth place was Keith Amor on the HM Plant Honda with a lap of 127.915mph.

Amor also clocked 127.525mph on his superstock BMW but just failed to pip Ryan Farquhar was flying on the KMR Kawasaki with a lap of 128.076mph.
Martin was right up on the leaderboard in this class with a 127.503mph lap. Ian Lougher was fourth with 126.216mph on his Black Horse Finance Kawasaki, from Donald (1226.012mph and Michael Rutter who clocked 125.495mph on the HM Plant Honda but had to pit after a bolt holding the gear lever in place had come adrift.

Michael Dunlop continues to set the pace in Supersport with his Street Sweep Yamaha. He clocked 125.087mph tonight but Hutchinson was hounding him with 125.020mph – after his first two laps on the bike this week.
McGuinness was third with a 123.128mph, despite not being 100% comfortable on the smaller stature machine. William Dunlop was fourth overall on the CD Racing Yamaha at 122.639mph, 0.1mph faster than Conor Cummins on the McAdoo Kawasaki.
Dave Molyneux and Patrick Farrance topped the Sidecar practice with a lap of 114.748 on their DMR Kawasaki.

Klaus Klaffenbock, aiming for his first TT win, and this year teamed with Dan Sayle, was second quickest with a lap of 113.576mph on the LCR Honda. Third were John Holden and Andrew Winkle on an LCR Suzuki at 112.017mph.
There were a number of incidents tonight but no one serious injuries in the solo classes. Three riders, Brian McCormack, Scott Wilson and Paul Shoesmith all came off at Waterworks. Jenny Tinmouth was off at Sulby Bridge. Takahiro Itami came off a Braddan.

Brandon Cretu crashed at the Nook and Stephen McIlvenna was off at Governors. Carl Fenwick and Keir Padley crashed their outfit and Cruickshanks and Pedley was taken to hospital by air-med with leg injuries.

MCN to ride with Lorenzo and Suzuki’s GSV-R at the TT!

By Marc Potter -MCN
General news
03 June 2010 17:32

MCN will be the only publication in the world to be riding with MotoGP championship leader Jorge Lorenzo in Friday’s parade lap and alongside Cameron Donald as he rides the Suzuki GSV-R around the Isle of Man.
It is the first time a four-stroke MotoGP bike has ever tackled the TT course and the first time Lorenzo has ever been to the Isle of Man.
Dainese-backed Jorge Lorenzo will be making his first appearance at the Isle of Man TT on Friday June 11 where he will ride a specially painted Yamaha R1, designed by an MCN reader. He will ride alongside GP legend Angel Nieto and will be joined by MCN editor, Marc Potter. All three will ride road-going Yamaha R1s.

The star will ride a full-lap of the 37.73-mile circuit before the Dainese-backed Superbike TT and then watch the race from a secret location.
After the Dainese-backed Senior race, Suzuki’s GSV-R will be ridden by TT racer Cameron Donald as a special tribute to Suzuki’s 50 years of racing at the Isle of Man TT.
The bike’s MotoGP rider Loris Capirossi will also be at the Isle of Man for the first time to watch his own 250bhp 800cc bike get ridden on Isle of Man soil, though it is not yet confirmed if Capirossi will be riding or not.

MCN editor Marc Potter will ride a Suzuki GSX-R1000 and (attempt to) follow Cameron Donald as he rides the GSV-R on a full lap of the circuit.
MCN’s Potter said: ‘I’m proud and completely honoured to be given the opportunity to bring MCN readers the inside story of these historic parade laps. I just hope I can do the stories justice.
“The Isle of Man TT is the greatest biking festival on earth, and with these two parade laps adding to the spectacular drama of what we’re already witnessing between the TT racing heroes on track, the 2010 TT will always be one to remember.

“MCN is proud to be celebrating its 55th year covering the Isle of Man TT and we hope that with our army of reporters, photographers and road tests in the Island we can continue to provide the best coverage of all the action possible both online and in the paper.”
Read our exclusive story online as it happens online on Friday June 11, and in full in MCN on sale Wednesday June 16.
