The FIM Superbike World Championship is set to receive a new game, but not in a way that you might expect…

After a prolonged absence, the WorldSBK championship is set to receive a new game, although this time it will be for the Meta Quest devices.

Billed as the “first realistic and fun motorcycle racing game in VR” – although GP Bikes players may disagree – VRIDER has been built from the ground up for virtual reality headsets.


The new virtual reality-only title will include the same 12-track roster of the real-world championship, plus the riders, teams and sponsors.

As motorcycle fans may be able to tell from Danilo Petrucci’s livery, while the game is released this year, it features the 2023 season. It is claimed that the game will feature ‘realistic aerodynamics and visor dirt’.

Alongside single-player content (Quick Race, Tournament, Ghost Challenge, Endurance and Hot Lap modes) multiplayer with voice chat for up to eight players is supported, alongside a tutorial and what is touted as ‘Proprietary MotionWellness’ technology – what that entails is a closely guarded secret.

It will be published by a new outfit, VRAL Games, and created by Funny Tales Gaming who has previously created three SBK mobile games: 2014-2016.

Of note, this is not the team (Milestone) that created the most recent PC and console platform of this series, SBK 22.

It is expected to be released for Meta Quest 2 and 3 in June 2024.

As much as I welcome a VR bike title, comercially speaking this will fail due to it being targeted toward such a small niche market for the game / series, and being limited to just Meta users, of which there are plently who dislike that "platform" / company.

If Assassin's Creed Nexus VR was a commercial flop with a massive non-VR userbase / history, then what chance does this stand? It's just not a smart nor logical move for a "simracing" / enthusiast title that would normally mainly be played by simracing PCVR users to not be released on PCVR.

I wonder too how this compares to something like Ride 4 with the UEVR mod seeing as it's tailored 100% to VR? I'd imagine those VR specific adjustments just to relate with how leaning and headset / camera positioning works, and possibly extra comfort settings considering that'll be one heck of a ride if done 100% realistically!

But yeah, it's a no buy anyway as I simply have a Reverb G2.

I love bike games, now sorry for my upcoming (same old) rant with no solutions suggested:

I hope one day there will be a technology to make realistic motoGP rigs. And after that its prices go down to reach the mainstream. Not anytime soon for sure.

A VR bike game for sure is fun!

But immersion also comes from good, realistic graphics.
 
I like the concept, but tying it to Meta only is not good. I just got a Quest2, so I guess I'm lucky.
 
On one hand, Meta is bringing al lot of new people to VR, on the other hand it is hindering the development of the market by doing platform-only-releases.
Since I got VR, I was waiting forever for a Motorcycle VR game (GP Bikes doesnt count; even tried Assetto Corsa Bike Mods).
The only option was to sit and wait patiently for Praydogs great UEVR mod and now I can enjoy MotoGP20 in VR, fully working with all feats and decent graphics (on my 3080 better than RIDE4 or RIDE5).
