The Engine Crane App Lets You Create Assetto Corsa Engines In Automation

The world of Assetto Corsa mods is almost limitless, and Engine Crane perfectly shows this: The app creates a bridge to Automation so you can create custom engines and actually use them in AC.

If you are not into BeamNG.drive, you might never have heard about Automation. On its own, the game is about designing and creating cars and engines from the ground up to build up your empire as a car tycoon. Automation is very in-depth in this regard, but it is perhaps best known for its capability to export player creations to BeamNG.drive to actually take them on the road or to the track.

Thanks to OverTake community member @zephyrj_15, this is also possible with Assetto Corsa - at least when it comes to engines. Their Engine Crane app allows players to add their custom-created motors to AC cars, taking multiple elements Automation calculates based on your design into account, so it goes deeper than simply using a different number of cylinders, horsepower and torque curve.

Instead, the following factors are all taken into account according to the app's description:

  • an N/A wheel torque-curve in the power.lut based on some assumed drivetrain losses. Currently it bases the mechanical efficiency on the drive-type of the AC though in future I plan to make it configurable.
  • If a turbo is used for the engine then it will generate a turbo section and accompanying turbo controller file to match the boost@RPM values from Automation as closely as it can
  • A coast torque value based on the friction values of the engine in the BeamNG mod
  • The inertia of the engine; again taken from the BeamNG mod
  • Fuel consumption based off the of the efficiency data of the engine.
  • If the existing cars engine weight is known then it will update the car weight based on the difference between the old and new engine weights
  • It updates the auto-shifter based on the RPM of the new engine and if it can find shift leds in the target AC car it will update those to the new engine RPM
  • It generates a new set of UI data for the car based of the new engine

As the tool is still in development, there are still a few limitations, but @zephyrj_15 is updating the tool quite frequently. In fact, since the original upload in September of 2022, a total of 18 updates have been posted, the most recent one on August 1, 2024, at the time of writing this article.

This most recent update added compatibility with the Assetto Corsa Car Tuner app by @Victor_. Previously, AC Car Tuner would not pick up cars modified with Engine Crane, which is now fixed for further customizability of AC.

So, feel free to let out your inner engineer, create the wildest engine you have always dreamed of in Automation and then go and run it in Assetto Corsa!

Instantly I get a vivid picture behind my eyes of Jimmer starting to install 4 x Rolls-Royce Griffon airplane engines totaling 10,000bhp (from my countryman's Team Dingo participation in the European "unlimited" tractor pulling top series in the 1990s) on his 1885 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, ofc. retrofitted with 4 fresh F1 Ferrari 2002 tires, hotlapping Nordschleife.

Edit: ofcourse only 3 tire replacements needed...no wait, just leave the original tires and steering as the nice legbrace.

Fantastic idea for the tech people that like to build the engines in their vehicles...as I understand it, this is mostly performance and audio under the hood and not so much visual? ( correct if wrong)....when opening the hood to see the engine:)

Ive been doing AI Only competitions with this over the last... What is it, 1 and a half years? It's really great because you can see people building insane stuff and them competing directly against eachother at the same time, something not usually possible in automation challenges. It's really fantastic for a host like me.
Working on the next one right now and I'm happy to see this tool getting some more recognition!

You're correct, it's the engine physics data that gets generated. If you know a thing or two about putting 3D engine models in AC cars then it'd be great to hear how that process works and I can see what I can do to help with it

that sounds like a really cool event, can you give me some more info on that? :)

Im not sure if i can post links and "self-advertise" here, but hey its worth a try and i'll know if it gets deleted.
Here's the last one we did, my discord is in the description of it.

(I'll do a description of the race too, because why not. We allowed both Turbo and NA engines, and Turbo engines turned out to be better as we had a max RPM which lead NA engines to hit peak power at redline, while the turbos could hit it before but had the problem of turbo lag. This was i think one of the only, if not the only time an NA engine finished on the podium, due to the chaos and no turbo lag. Funnily it was me who got 2nd ;))

There's also a 'custom formula championship' that's currently in development.
The premise being that there are teams with their own cars/engines racing each other with real drivers.
Getting the balancing right to make different configs of car/engine viable is quite tricky; it does capture the team aspect of IRL racing in a way that other types of sim-racing haven't been able to though

Sadley this is way above my pay grade and knowledge....lol:redface::)...FYI, the attached examples are from BeamNG:inlove:.

Although reaching out to 'stenovitz' here in the forums may yeld some information possibly:geek:;)
