The Cammus C12 Is An All-In-One 12Nm Direct Drive Wheel

Hot on the heels of its C5 last year, Cammus has expanded upon its wheel-base-inside-a-wheel concept with the new C12.

Cammus is trying to make direct drive wheel bases more accessible not necessarily by focusing on price or ecosystem, but rather the lack of both.

Its idea is to reduce the total cost needed to get started, and size, by having the direct drive motor and wheel as one single unit, which in turn is mounted to a desk (or rig).

This also means, however, that there is no easy quick release to swap from a giant range of wheel designs – although a second design is in the works, which can be interchanged.

The C12 is the latest in the range with this singular design philosophy. The Chinese automotive company has taken the concept and increased its peak torque – from 5Nm in the C5 model to, yes, you have guessed it, 12Nm.

On the front, there are 10 backlit pushbuttons, two 12-position switches (or 12-speed knobs in Cammus parlance), an analog joystick, a directional joystick and two rotary encoders.

There is also a diminutive display for information such as speed or gear selected and an LED strip to showcase revs. On the side are two further rotary encoders.

The wheel’s spokes are manufactured using an aluminium allow, the wheel rim is wrapped in leather.

Around the rear are two small magnetic carbon fibre paddles for shifting and the all-important inputs for PC sim racing – this includes an input for a fan, a USB data connection, power, a reset button, the power button and a USB Type-C for optional pedals, handbrakes or shifters. This perhaps hints at additional Cammus ecosystem additions in the future.

The aforementioned cooling fan is an ancillary unit out back, not integrated into the device itself (so not quite 'all-in-one' then, gah). It ships with a T-bracket, but not the full desk mount. The device works with Cammus’ existing PC software.

The C12 is available to pre-order now with a $50 down payment, with the total price stickering at $699, or down to $499 for those who order early. The optional desk clamp retails for $39, all prices are before shipping and any local taxes.

Use the code ‘overtake’ at the checkout for a five per cent discount.

A full review will follow at a later date. If you have tried Cammus equipment, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Looks pretty cool. I have no clue which dd brand I should run with, fanatec have horrendous trust pilot reviews for poor customer service and even build quality (as of components being produced right now)

Ive seen similar online regarding moza, sim magic and other brands besides cammus are wildly out of my budget. I'm on the fence with cammus due to their relative infancy and unknown (it seems) reputation.

Are things really that bad over at fanatec?

The wheel looks like a neat idea. Although it's hard to make out how it actually works with the pictures I can find. Sometimes the unit at the back looks longer and flatter.

Probably not going to appeal to someone like me that already got a decant setup and is looking to move to DD if I do upgrade. But for a newcomer it looks like a decent if expensive option.

I have never had issue with their service however I haven't had to use it in a while. I bought the CSW 2.5 just as it came out. Many people complaining seem to be in the US, so it may be just down to distance. I know the one time I contacted support (again, years ago) I had an instant response and a free part shipped straight away.

No issue with quality either, and I take the wheel on and off regularly because I break down my rig and pack it away when not in use. It wouldn't surprise me if they had all sorts of issues ramping up production to meet demand.

This video will give you an idea how it works although it's a different model.

Personally, my experience with Fanatec has been mixed. Their customer service has always been fairly good, however not a single piece of hardware that I've bought from them has not had problems, or required maintenance, specifically replacing parts. In general I've been slowly getting away from their eco system through upgrading. For the money though, I don't think they are at all a bad option.

As far as Fanatec, I bought a CSR Forza wheel and pedal set way back when they were new. I love it.

I did have a issue after quite a few years of regular use..the throttle pot went bad. I emailed them and they said they don't make those anymore, BUT we have a few left over and will send you one for $25. They sent me a new throttle pedal within a week and so far it is still going strong. ( I am in USA).

I like the CSR wheel so much, I found a new one (Wheel and Pedal set) for sale cheap and I bought it to keep as a spare. It's ready to go when I need it. Peace of mind.

The Cammus looks nice though, I would probably get one if I needed a new wheel, the price is right.

Fanatec was the only high end ecosystem for too long, and looks like they didn't feel any urge to improve its products. I only had a CSP V3 pedal set, and it had problems with the brake signal reading, not to mention it didn't really feel like an upgrade from the thrustmaster T500 pedalset, which costs less than half.
Their lower cost rims are plastic, their old QR had issues, podium and CSL DD didn't have smooth motors...
On the other side all those chinese companies knew they had to make the best product at their price tag to not fail, and most reviews i see, especially for simagic, have been pretty good. If you don't want to go for a chinese company and cannot afford a simucube i'd go for Asetek, got their forte pedals and they're great

5 Nm on this format had impressive performance, regular DDs needed double the torque to match its responsiveness. If the torque increase scales well, this has all the power that the great majority of simracers could ever want. Will follow.

For now, can't really go wrong with Simagic. Really absolutely solid product for very fair prices. Amazing eco-system too. They nailed every product category on the head right out the gate.

with fantec it vearies where you live. if your in NA there 2 more places but im not postive on them you should be good for the customer support. i watched a video earlier comparing the 2. cammus is coming from china. he said about the proplems with fantec if your not in one of them. i saw a coment about the c5 buddy recived his and it was DOA it took him 2 weeks to get it back.

This appears good for a VR user as far as design goes. Plenty of knobs and buttons. They don't care much about looks and the round rim will serve well in the majority of the situations. If performance is good and heating is no issue, I will prefer this compact wheelbase over the usual designs.

Finances doesn't currently support buying sim magic unfortunately. I'm debating going for the entry level csl dd bundle but stick with my t-lcm pedals, perhaps I'll get the boost kit eventually too.

Question for you guys,
As a t300 owner would the csl dd (entry level fanatec bundle) be a worthy upgrade, especially if I get the boost kit later on?
Ive read that t300 to moza r5 wasn't worth it for some people, and haven't see a great deal when comparing t300 to csl dd. I never run my ffb at full strength and am totally happy with the power of the t300 so needing colossal amounts of ffb isn't really a high priority for me.

Moza R5 is kind of pointless, your T300 is about the same torque, just slower response rate. I thought Moza R5 is 3nm, but it's 5.5nm which is good step over the old wheels. But CSL DD is good, this wheel as well.

I'm very interested in a comparison of the response rates. The heavier the wheel, the slower it would be to respond & the fine details will be lower. This is the reason why Williams had steering wheels w/o display for 10+ yrs. But in the case of this wheel, the mass is centered, so it's not such a big issue.
There needs to be a test with proper measurements, but I love the idea & for this price it's amazing! Also, the wheel is just perfect for me. Round with lots of rotary switches, super versatile.

i would recommend fanatec, Just based on my own experience. Ive been able to run all the aftermarket wheels ive wanted to... with their podium hub or with the srm (emulator) hub. I really like the new QR2. Ive in the past have always gotten my orders on time or even early ... I've seen all the post as well and thankfully i havent been effected. honestly i think a lot of it is just the culture these days. People just have to have it right now and dont take into account the time difference and weekends and holidays.. Ive had their products for two years now, the only thing is i recommend staying away from the csl universal hubs (the cheap one). I upgraded recently to the clubsport DD and im sure it will last me a few years-

I would never go with Fanatec. Too many issues. Watch the YouTube video from Kireth where he asked questions of the guy that runs Fanatec. He don't care about his customers. Boosted Media is also trying to get an interview with the guy as well. There are plenty of videos on YouTube of people with problems. I use Asetek . Fantastic products

Would not, and never will give Fanatec another cent after seeing how they treat their customers. Its clear that their focus leads up to the point of sale and then stops. The system of marking an order as shipped when they haven't even produced the physical item just so it can't be cancelled is the height of arrogance.

Its basic process that as a business grows in sales they also need to grow the resources required to manufacture/source product, manage logistics and provide customer support, Not just take the money and buy fancy things.

Can guarantee that the reason they feel they can get away with is because they are dealing direct with the buyer, if they screwed over a reseller network in this fashion no one with a legitimate name would touch them.

People are still buying, they don't care in the slightest if a percentage of those customers are getting screwed over with poor service.

They are using a pancake or radial rotor/stator instead of a typical barrel rotor/stator. Good to see some lower price options coming, because these bases are all highly overpriced for what they are.

Funny that you mention it: this is what an outrunner is. Fanatec tried to convince us that outrunners were the best of the best, but it was a wasted concept that did not yield the slightest advantage over competitors. Then enters Cammus, and out of nowhere and with no marketing involved, delivers an outrunner making full advantage of the concept and delivering insane performance for the buck.

If they could deliver better after sales supports and word spread about it, C5s would sell like hotcakes.

That's disappointing, when I purchased my CSW 2.5 their customer service was pretty good, but that's a good few years ago now. They didn't seem to set up much of a customer support department for international customers. In Europe there are laws requiring they provide a certain level of support.
I wonder if this is mostly an EU vs everywhere else issue?
