There are three starter cars in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, but which one is best?

It has been a long wait, but after several delays, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is finally here. The first TDU game in 13 years, Solar Crown lets you drive incredible cars around the neon streets of Hong Kong Island. Before you can start your journey, you must buy your first car. This is an important decision, so what is the best starter car in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown?

When you start the game, you are handed the keys to a Lamborghini Huracan to test drive around a restricted area. Don not get too attached to it, though. After completing the tutorial, you lose the Lamborghini and are flown to Hong Kong Island, where you visit a dealership to buy your first car. As money (known as ‘Solar Coins’) is tight in Solar Crown, you will spend a lot of time in your first car, so choosing wisely is important.

There are three starter cars you can buy in Solar Crown:

2018 Ford Mustang GT

First up is the Ford Mustang GT, which packs a growling 5.0-litre V8 sending 453 horsepower to the rear wheels. In terms of stats, the pony car has a 5.6 top speed, 6.1 acceleration, 3.3 braking, and 2.6 handling rating. While it is the most powerful starter car, it is also the heaviest, weighing a hefty 1,721 kg. This makes it difficult to handle around Hong Kong Island’s tight street corners, but its high performance will help you outrun opponents on straights.

With assists off, it is easy to oversteer if you apply too much power, so be gentle with the throttle when cornering. The Mustang costs 192,500 Solar Coins.

2018 Alpine A110 Legende

Next is the 2018 Alpine A110 Legende. A reborn version of the Alpine A110 rally legend, the French sports car has a 1.8-litre turbo engine producing 248 horsepower, earning it a 5.5 top speed and 6.2 acceleration rating in Solar Crown.

Like the Mustang, power is sent to the rear wheels. Braking is rated at 4.3. Despite only weighing 1,123 kg, it scores 1.9 for handling. This is surprisingly low as the A110 is renowned for its agility thanks to its all-aluminium platform. Compared to the Mustang, the Alpine has slightly better acceleration and better brakes, but is much lighter.

As for the price, the Alpine A110 will set you back 199,000 Solar Coins, making it the most expensive starter car.

2011 Nissan 370Z

Finally, we have the Nissan 370Z. Launched in 2008, it remained in production until 2021 before being replaced with the current Nissan Z. Under the bonnet is a 3.7-litre V6, generating 328 horsepower. Featuring a rear-wheel drive layout, the Nissan 370Z weighs 1,466 kg.

Nissan’s sports car scores 5.5 for top speed, 5.2 for acceleration, 5.8 for braking, and 2.4 for handling, making it a good all-rounder. While it has less power than the Mustang, it has better stopping power thanks to its superior brakes. Costing 160,000 Solar Coins, the Nissan 370Z is the cheapest starter car. It has a great balance between performance and handling, making it ideal for navigating Hong Kong Island's variety of roads.

What is the best starter car in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown?

Choosing the best starter car depends on your preference and driving style. But if you want the best balance between performance and handling, the Nissan 370Z is the best starter car in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. It is faster than the Alpine A110 and easier to handle than the Ford Mustang. It is also the cheapest of the three, so you will have some spare change to spend on upgrades or save towards your next car.

With ongoing server issues, Solar Crown has had a rocky start but has tons of potential. You can find out our verdict on KT Raicng’s new open-world racer in our Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown review.
