Most Played Racing Games On Steam In May 2024

With the racing season firing on all cylinders and big releases following suit, sim racers and racing gamers are spoilt for choice. Here's what they most played on Steam in May 2024.

May 2024 saw the release of F1 24 - albeit at the very tail end of the month, with the full release happening on May 31. As a result, the game's statistics are not included in the list below - also because the player average for less than half a day the game was fully available in May are not available.

What is available, however, is the game's peak since its release. Four hours after its full launch, F1 24 peaked at 8,216 players - considerably less than F1 23's all-time peak of 14,512 in November 2023 and post-release peak of 13,302 in June 2023.

Meanwhile, nothing changed at the top of the list - but third-placed Assetto Corsa achieved a milestone. For the first time in its near-10-year history, Kunos Simulazioni's evergreen racing sim averaged more than 10,000 players. Undoubtedly, AC's thriving modding community deserves credit for this - the title being played more than ever almost 10 years after its full release is nothing short of astounding.

Ouch... LMU took a big hit in this month. Looks like some went back to RF2. Surprising AC gained a small percentage. Must be the new surface FX. Need for Speed franchise must have had a bundle sale.

How much meaning can we really infer from these numbers?

I haven't played LMU more than 30 minutes since release, I'm waiting until it gets coaxed into a bit better shape ... but I still spent as much money on it as someone who has been playing it non-stop (and I haven't been increasing their server demands).

Guess the same doesn't count for BeamNG which is even older?

Not a great deal and this is concurrent users rather than individual users over the period.

Only the devs know how viable their games are at the end of the day and as an offline player that's all that matters to me.

If you race online it's probably better to have more people to play with but that doesn't guarantee a decent lobby for every race.

Enough said.
I love this monthly thread, just facts, most played, simple.
AC still growing, when summer is making almost all other drop, some a little some a lot.
Of course the zealots, from one title or an other, will come to say it does not matter, even though they would kill, to have their precious get recognition.
To be clear, I enjoy many titles, they do not have to be popular, just popular to me, but seeing AC still earning the Lion share, always bring a smile to my face.
Long live AC.

AC 12/2014 - Beamng 5/2015 if we look at the release date

And though early access doesn't always count for much nowadays, BeamNG is still in development and was barely more then a tech demo on 'release'.
AC has been a long time EOL, with the awesome mod community keeping it alive and relevant.

Besides the massive success of AC, which I can only applaud, the other thing that strikes me, is that if we are only going to count the titles that are designed and targeted for the hardcore simracing crowd (I know I know, you need to make some assumptions to come up with such definition), this list hides enormous chasms regarding activity per title...

AC - 10k
ACC - 3k (great number! even with the drop after the enthusiasm for Nordschleife)

...

...
AMS2 and rF2 - four hundred something
LMU - two hundred something

Basically, only iRacing and Kunos titles are the only simracing-oriented games that are succesful and probably outside the niché of the genre. The rest cannot get out of that bubble.

Depends on your definition of successful. AMS2 player base is predominantly single player I suspect and therefore the concurrent figures will be low. But we know they have sold between 360k and 400k copies. For a small team, that seems plenty successful to me and they are happily plugging away doing their thing improving the title and are financially successful and sustainable ( they resisted two buyouts according to rumour ). Studio 397 is in a much more precarious position by contrast, but I hope they pull through.

I recommend checking New Star GP, it is on sale right now too ! Retro arcade covering the 80's to 2020's era's of F1 !

Very addictive game, perfect for the SteamDeck with excellent controls. It would be cool if it supported more cars per race, 10 opponents is a little low, but it's one of the best racing games I have played in a while.

LMU is trending extremely low, but not unexpected. It's just too unfinished and barebones to have any hold on players, in spite of its excellent physics. They need to add basic features like spectating AI when retiring, timing info when monitoring, championship mode, etc... and fast, otherwise it will keep fading into irrelevance.

Yes, I know early access and all, but still, it's not looking good no matter how you look at it.

How is that Tokyo cruising looking? AC is really the biggest competitor for Forza Horizon :)

Edit: To make my point clear, i like people saying "AC dominates, etc etc", and compare it to actualy racing games... nobody is racing in AC. LFM is dead already in AC. Those 10k people are just driving around on roads or drifting. AC is basically the cheap FH alternative with "free" mods (rips), and pay mods that are basically copyright infringement.

Note that isn't a take against its physics or anything, this is the reality, AC is NOT a racing game anymore.

Circuit Superstars doesn't get any love anymore. My favourite racing game only gets an average of 30 players per day.

You ignorant lot don't know what you're missing.
You seems suprised. Game barely gets updates, and no DLCs as well, how something like this will keep players for long?
