How To Take Advantage Of RaceRoom's New Graphics For Screenshots

RaceRoom's brand-new graphical overhaul is finally here for sim racers to dive into. Of course, this also benefits virtual photographers - here are some helpful tips.

Raceroom has been an underdog in the world of sim racing for years. Bigger budget titles like iRacing and the Assetto Corsa franchise have overshadowed it for many years. However, over the past year, the team at KW Studios has ramped up its offerings monumentally.

First came the new and exciting tyre model players had been calling for. Once implemented, it was a great step forward for the sim's physics and subsequently had players flocking back to the title, at least for a little while. This latest update is a huge step forward for RaceRoom as well: Not only has it improved the graphics monumentally, but there is excitement and buzz around the sim again; something RaceRoom needs to capitalise on.

Which Settings To Change

It is important to note that you can still adjust and fine-tune exactly what your game looks like for this update. For example, if you are running on an older system, you may not want to sacrifice your FPS for the sake of better graphics. If your hardware can handle it, here are the best settings for the new RaceRoom update.

The most important thing is to fine-tune your settings. Play around with the sliders and do FPS comparisons, it is no good running with the most beautiful-looking graphics, but racing is below 60 FPS. The best way to do this without sacrificing too much graphical quality is to reduce the number of cars visible at any one time, as well as shadow quality. RaceRoom also has handy diagrams showing the impact on CPU, GPU and overall performance for many graphics settings.

This does not necessarily apply to photo mode. Or, well, free cam in replay mode. Make sure that you change your settings to maximise what the game offers when you go into photo mode. Your FPS should not suffer with the replay being a file you play rather than new information your PC has to process.

When in free cam mode, make sure that you assign controls to each of the ‘Free Move’ cameras. These ‘Free Move’ cameras are essential for creating and forcing new angles with the camera that you will not be able to attain with the default setups.

Comparing Pre-update To Post-update Shots

With RaceRoom’s new lighting and shadows, your placement of the camera is very important. RR‘s photo mode is certainly not the most sophisticated, for example, the lack of photographic terminology of Shutter speed, Aperture and ISO is very apparent once you start trying to perfect your photos.

RaceRoom’s ‘Photo Mode’ is only accessible through replays, so make sure you save any races that you want to experiment with. These photos were taken from two different time trial sessions in the ‘competitions’ mode.

Post-update

The first image was taken pre-update with the same settings applied as post-update. The obvious difference between the two images is the texture quality, however, the shadows and the motion blur on the wheels are much clearer, and the quality is undeniably better. The improved depth of field is also quite noticeable in the post-update shot, adding to the overall quality.

RaceRoom’s photo mode is very user-friendly so if you are just starting with your photography and want to learn how to compose a photo, RaceRoom is a fantastic place to start. Be sure to use lots of blur for anything but the car. You can try and updgrade your lightning all you want, textures are still from a long gone era and it tells. Also despite all the technical update don't run on dirt or through a cone if you do not want to break immersion, everything will clip inside your cockpit (dust included). Still feels cheap for the content price tag... :coffee:

“everything will clip inside your cockpit” same as ac, acc, ams2, ir , when sobe objects go throght the body panels. there is no suich issue only on gt7, but its a different world. and re looks better then many other titles.
So it seems like just another trolling comment you did

I had a little play last night and found that I was able to gain a tonne of FPS by using DSR from Nvidia control panel, going up a resolution from 1080 to 1440 and lowering the AA. I didn't really notice the image looking any worse, not really any additional jaggies but that was whilst I was racing.

You come across as a total troll with vision half as good as everyone else on this page.

Go ahead clip ACC or AMS2 with smoke, dust and grass inside the cockpit or with a matterless cone that just goes through your car unhinged. I also wonder how gears are shifted on half of the content when the drivers does not move any fingers or arms (while for some car strangely enough it does). And please don't load Portimao or you would be confusing the background mountain for an extremly zoomed-in low res picture of Mars from Hubble.

We can pretend all we want, the ones trolling here are the devs. 120+€ for the full experience (which does not include all content for whatever reason) ? :roflmao:

Ditto here taking advance of FSR for AMD.

Besides somhow also totally got rid of flickering in VR just by lowering my screen update from 144Hz to 120Hz, lowering density from 1440p to 1080p, using Quest 120Hz and Oculus Dev Tool bandwidth to 700Mbps. From here I was able to max out VR resolution and VR performance with graphics update has been better experience to me than ever before in R3E.

How does one get higher quality when everything is at ultra or high in 4k?

Impressive update on Vulkan... You can tell the assets still have some way to go in places, but it's new colour tones really get me more engaged in it from a visual standpoint...

It'll probably be the update of the year for most people... It may even get my vote even if last years tyre update was far more important... It is that impressive from where it was beforehand...

I don't have what i would consider to be a top tier system, but my settings are pretty much maxed out, and I am getting excellent performance out of R3E now. I can run the Nordschleife at 24x time scale and I see no stuttering when the lighting needed to update, I ran 52 cars at Mid Ohio and not one issue with FPS or anything while I raced. So far KW has delivered with the performance side of the update. I am very pleased, so far.

Waiting for the new DTM cars and Oschersleben. I was under the impression that the new cars were being released with the update, but after going over the past press releases, I see I glossed over the parts that said those updates are coming later. I can wait. The updates has rekindled my interest so, I'll find something to do while I wait. Also I found out that I can alter the steering lock on formula cars. Time to take the FRR x17 to Macau again.

Stupid question how do i use vulkan with it ? becasue the default shits itself on a 13900K and 4090 at 7680x2160 , less then 60 fps ..

Nice work Raceroom, looks fantastic.

Just playing around with the photo Mode during a replay to see how the 'Motion Blur' works....haven't quite got it mastered as yet, so much to learn to get a nicely composed screenshot with the motion blur:confused::geek:...lol

Just a couple a noob starter screenshots:redface::roflmao:

Have to say though raceroom has got the most amazing feature set for moving. setting up cameras...the Gold Standard;)

Launch the game by clicking the play button on the Steam app. A popup will appear where you can select the different versions you wish to run. The options you'll find are...

  • Play RaceRoom
  • Launch Raceroom (VR) in Steam VR Mode
  • Play RaceRoom with DXVK
  • Play RaceRoom (32bit)

Yeah, which one is everyone selecting as I'm just pressing play on the first option?! What's DXVK? I did give it a Google but it said something about Linux...

dxvk just takes your dx9 output and allows it to pass through vulkan api , yep its probably more complex than that , but at a base level it does that

I tried both regular and Vulcan. Initially, I thought the colors were more vibrant with Vulcan but in DX9 I was able to run SMAA. After trying again, I no longer think that is the case. Both APIs were equally vibrant in my opinion.

I settled on DX9 simply because that is what the CrewChief launcher is set on. Honestly, I am not sure how to get third party launchers to run in Vulcan, 32bit or VR mode. I looked at the game files to see if there are alternate app executables I could shortcut to, but I only seen the default app. Perhaps I would need to set up run prefrences in Steam?

About photography in RaceRoom, I need to check my assigned controls. I set some key binds a while ago, but only used them once. I just have to see what they are again.
