A Thelma & Louise-inspired story, ‘rouglite’ elements and a big, powerful muscle car in black and white. Heading Out is unlike any other driving game.

You know those Assetto Corsa mods that seem to be popular on YouTube where it is simply a busy highway, and the driver must weave between traffic like a Matrix: Reloaded scene?

Imagine that, but with hints of Vanishing Point – thanks to the American muscle car – and a road-trip story in between rounds where you are trying to avoid the cops.


That is, roughly, what we think Heading Out reminds us of. Now, the Serious Sim-created title has been picked up by Embracer Gorup-owned Saber Interactive.

There is said to be an element of strategy, as you must pick your route across Western USA for each mission and watch your fuel level. Alongside avoiding traffic and staying on route, you must also seemingly ‘take down’ rivals and the chasing police.

Then, at every ‘pitstop’, you progress through a stylised cel-shaded story. Planning your route will affect what you see, or even hear on the radio.

The ‘rouge-like’ element is explained as each ‘new story’ selected will see you take different routes, make fresh choices and encounter new events – let’s see…

Alongside the news of the publishing deal, and an opportunity to go hands-on during the upcoming Boston-based PAX East event, it has been announced that it will be released on 7th May 2024 on PC via Steam. Pricing is yet to be unveiled.
