Forza Horizon 4 To Be Delisted December 15, 2024

Despite having been succeeded already, Forza Horizon 4 is still a very popular racing game. However, the game will be delisted from digitial stores at the end of 2024. All DLC has already been pulled.

The Forza Horizon series is arguably the king of open-world racing games. Its current game, Forza Horizon 5 is perpetually near the top of our list of most played racing games on Steam, only trailing BeamNG.drive in May. And even its predecessor Forza Horizon 4 continues to be a popular choice for racing game fans, having racked up over 4,300 players on average in May.

However, developer Playground Games and publisher Microsoft Games have announced that the game will be delisted from digital stores on December 15, 2024. That means the game will be just over six years old when it will be unavailable for purchase online, physical copies excluded. Players who still want to get their hands on the game still have about half a year of time to do so, so the announcement was made well in advance.

The reasons behind the delisting appear to be "licensing and agreements with our partners", as the delisting announcement explained. FH4 will not be available on Steam and in the Microsoft Store anymore after December 15. Plus, anyone who played the game via Game Pass and has an active subscription as per June 25, 2024, "will be eligible to receive a game token if you have purchased any extra content for Forza Horizon 4 through your Xbox Message Center."

DLC Already Unavailable, Final Playlist Series Launched

What was not announced ahead of time at all, however, is the delisting of all DLC related to Forza Horizon 4. The extra content has been made unavailable as the delisting announcement was made. Instead, only the Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate versions of FH4 will be available. As the game is currently on sale on Steam, an Xbox store sale is set to follow starting July 14.

Consequently, the last Forza Horizon 4 series playlist has launched. Series 77 will be active until August 22, 2024, and players will only be able to access the playlist screen to view their playlist history after this date. Daily and weekly challenges are set to continue via the Forza Events screen, which will reward players with Backstage Passes upon completion. All previously Festival Playlist-exclusive cars will be added ot the Backstage Pass Cars list after Series 77.

Could this also hint at a new Forza Horizon title lining up on the grid? Rumors were swirling ahead of the Xbox Showcase Event on June 9, but the open-world racing franchise was not part of the event. However, with Forza Motorsport having seen a new entry to the series in late 2023 and with Forza Horizon 5 turning three years old (the same time span between the releases of FH4 and 5) in November, it would not seem unreasonable that Forza Horizon 6 being on the... well, horizon could also be part of the reasons behind the delisting of Forza Horizon 4.

I didn't know it was 80% off, I just bought it for 20 USD on steam. I liked it before when I played it thru gamepass, 20 bucks for ultimate edition, might as well.

Anyone wanting to grab this before it disappears, a word of warning. Somehow, the Steam version does NOT have support for a wheel. The wheel tab in the controls section of the options menu is completely missing. I had to refund my copy and buy the MS Store version. I wish I hadn't now. I uninstalled both FH4 and 5 recently after becoming too frustrated with the control bindings and the lack of worth of my time from a game play perspective. Personally I'd rather just do laps/race in an actual sim. I wish I found more fun out of the series.

Also you need to sign into an xbox account, which i do have but not sure what the passwords were, i picked ultimate edition up for 16 quid though as I've never been a fan of trying to crow bar games into AC, so for free roam i'll use Forza 4 as it clearly is far far better for that than trying to force it into AC for the sake of 16 quid...

I was blown away by FH4. Maybe its my most played game. It didn't make it to my new PC build b/c FH5 was on the *ahem* horizon. I would download it again to finish the Fortune Island DLC, but the download size is ridiculous.

Personally, I think 6 years is too short to have a game on the market. If this is down to licensing of cars, can the devs get their heads out of their butts and re-write the contracts? This is the first time I've heard this. So plan for it! It probably is a BS excuse. They don't want to commit a spec of resources to supporting it. Though if you sell it for another 5 years at $15 a pop, that's gotta be almost pure profit.

And then why wouldn't someone like Porsche want people still playing their car models? Unless they think it reduces the value of future licensing agreements? It's all so short-termism that it drives me bonkers.

Eh? My Fanatec GT DD Pro in compatibility mode is recognised (Steam version) and has wheel settings menus and is perfectly usable.

FH 3 was delisted after 4 years (same for FM 7). Well, at least FH 4 doesn't require an always online connection.
It'll nice if they'll unlock some online only cars events, but i doubt.*
So, FH4 is the most longevous title so far now.
Keep in mind that along car license, there are song license and song royalties are much more complicated than car ones. And if a new Horizon game is coming, a discounted FH 4 could potentially ruin the (possible) upcoming new game sales.
Obtain and renew licences (and this mean, car brand, car model, car logos, eventually designer logo, other sponsors logo, etc, etc) it's a mere economically and legally agree with all parts involved.
Some brands want a lot money (eg: Ferrari, Porsche), some brands want use the game as in game advertise (eg: some Ford veichles), some others has singed exclusivity license (see Toyota with Polyphony/Sony), some others hates you (eg: Delorean after FH 3; but it has come back in FH 5 if i'm not wrong).
And maybe some contracts are valid only for 3 active games (hypoteically) and rewon them on a old title isn't profitable as in the new one. And on the same lenght are the car maker legal marketing/license teams.
Sadly nothing new under the sun... :(

Anyway since Hot Wheels DLC was not included in the Ultimate Edition (wich bother me quite a lot), basically it's the only DLC wich today is not available anymore. Unless it's has been unlocked for every Ultimate owner.

I can see the Horizon series developing into the "Main" Forza series...

I can also see some point in my life time that series becoming a world tour game rather than region specific...

As for the de-listing specifically... It sucks for fans of the region who just want to drive around in a bunch of cars they could never own... But at the same time these online only games always die...

Random open world racing with mates or randoms can be a lot of fun...

That is strange. I remember getting the pirate version to see if any of my gear was compatible. I remember distinctly that the wheel tab was completely missing from that version, being the Steam rip. After FH5 came out, I had it for over a year (again pirated, I think) before I could actually use it. Crash to desktop during the initial loading screens. Every. Single. Time. When it finally worked I decided to buy both 4 and 5 in the Steam bundle on sale. STILL the wheel option is missing from FH4. I thought maybe being a rip it was left out somehow and that the official version would be fine. Nope. Not for me anyway. And many others on the site were complaining of the same thing.

So, I guess it's different for everyone? But, I've never had a game totally remove a set of features because of my gear (decent stuff, OSW SC1, HE Ulti+ pedals, etc). It just won't bind when assigning the devices if the game does not support. Very strange.
