The sim racing presence in this year’s edition of the FIA Motorsport Games has increased with the addition of the Esports F4 Cup on iRacing.

The FIA Motorsport Games is a nation’s based variety motorsport event, known as racing’s equivalent to the Olympics. The event even houses an onsite sim racing competition, and a new addition is joining the fold.

Alongside the previous existing sim racing competition on Assetto Corsa Competizione that saw James Baldwin win gold, there will be another new addition in the form of iRacing with the FIA F4 car.

Therefore for this year’s FIA Motorsport Games, it is set to have two sim racing competitions, those being the Esports GT Cup on ACC, and now the Esports F4 Cup on iRacing.

Esports in FIA Motorsport Games

Back in 2019, the first-ever edition of the FIA Motorsport Games was held at Vallelunga, and it featured an onsite sim racing event. That year it was held on Gran Turismo Sport due to the FIA’s partnership with Polyphony Digital.

Fast forward to the delayed second edition at Paul Ricard in 2022, and the FIA are no longer partnered with Polyphony. Instead, the esports competition was held on event organiser SRO’s preferred platform ACC, which is also the sim used for their various GT World Challenge Esports series.

FIA Esports Commission President Niroshan Pereira had the following to say with the addition of the Esports F4 Cup:

“We are delighted to welcome a second Esports discipline to the 2024 FIA Motorsport Games. The Esports GT Category with Assetto Corsa Competizione proved to be hugely popular in Marseille, and we have no doubt that the Esports F4 Category with iRacing will be a similar success.
This addition to the programme will offer ASNs and their selected Esports representatives even more opportunities to shine and compete for medals. We are hopeful of attracting more than 100 entries across the two Esports categories as the FIA Motorsport Games continues to showcase the skills of the stars of both the present and the future.”
Despite previously announcing the addition of an Esports Rally Cup category, it would appear that will now not be debuting in this October’s edition of the FIA Motorsport Games.

Valencia to iRacing?

It is possible that whether you excel in driving the F4 car on iRacing or GT3 cars on Assetto Corsa Competizione, you can potentially qualify to compete for your country. All you need is to contact your country’s FIA-recognised National Sporting Authority.

But there may be some potential news here even for those who do not intend to qualify. The FIA Motorsport Games will be held 23-27 October, during iRacing‘s 2024 Season 4 which is set to begin earlier that month.

In April 2023, Valencia was added to ACC most likely to coincide with the FIA Motorsport Games. So could iRacing be preparing to do the same? Considering their July 2023 development update specifying the additions of still-to-be-added venues like Algarve, Misano and Navarra, maybe they could be secretly have been working to create the 2.488-mile venue.

Nothing has been officially confirmed by iRacing yet, however.
