iRacing Partners With Microsoft Research For Better Singleplayer AI & More

iRacing is an a competitive multiplayer racing sim first and foremost, but its singleplayer AI opponents could see a significant boost as a result of a new collaboration with Microsoft Research.

The definition of AI in the gaming space is undergoing a bit of a transition. In racing simulations and games, it usually still refers to computer-controlled opponents that are on track with the player when racing offline - not the increasingly-popular and sometimes eerily human, self-learning models that can answer questions, generate images and videos, or even write stories.

iRacing is looking to leverage the latter to improve its offline opponents, however - and more: The racing simulation service has announced a collaboration with Microsoft Research "to explore this cutting-edge field". The idea for this collaboration is to not only make iRacing's AI drivers more realistic and deep, but also for driver coaches, engineers "and many other possibilities" to enhance players' experiences.

To achieve this, so-called Large Action Models are to be used as a foundation for these functions. "The goal is to provide iRacing with models that developers can use to supplement the existing product with artificial intelligence-based training, giving iRacers on-track feedback, quality in-game improvements, and new ways of improving their performance and having fun on the virtual track", as the official announcement reads.


Interestingly, the collaboration was set in motion by former IndyCar driver Oriol Servia, who will also be involved in it moving forward. iRacing President Tony Gardner states: "We couldn't be more excited to work with Microsoft on new AI-based learning models which hopefully will lead to iRacers having even a better experience, not to mention improving their racecraft and performance."

On the other hand, Microsoft research hopes to learn from iRacing to "advance our scientific knowledge and ability to build AI systems that span and connect between the physical and virtual worlds", according to Microsoft Research President Peter Lee.

More Dynamic Engineers & More?​

Now, all of this might sound relatively abstract, but to get an idea what the collaboration might result in, a look back to two since-deleted previews for what is now Project Motor Racing might be in order. When the project was still called GT Revival in 2023, Game Design Director Austin Ogonoski posted two video previews to his YouTube channel - one about a commentary team, the other about a race enginer, both driven by AI.

The commentators used the voices of real personalities and referenced the track or drivers and their past races, and reacted to what was happening on track in real time instead of using pre-recorded lines. The race engineer used a similar approach, reminding the player of where they could improve, where they lost time the last time they drove at that specific track, and more - there is a lot of potential in building more dynamic and individual systems in this regard.

For iRacing's AI opponents, for instance, that could mean drivers with their own personalities and who remember past races agains the player - and we could imagine that they would not be afraid of retaliating for something that happened multiple races ago if the opportunity presents itself.

Its great to see AI finally getting the love us Virtual Sim Racers all deserve by this point! The AI in Iracing is already some of the best out there! I know there is a chance that this project could fail, but that's life and I'm glad Iracing are willing to trial test for us PC sim racers! There are so many ideas and possibilities that can turn into reality with AI in every game ever, but especially in Sim Racing. Hopefully this idea isn't out of reach with other Sim Racing based Studio's to try something like this partnership!!!

An “intelligent” race ingeneer able to analyze the performance of the driver and give him pertinent advice and recommend settings would be great. To be able to have a conversation with such artificially intelligent race engineer would be an advancement in our hobby.
Even if it’s not originally part of the SIM it could be an application that could be used with any SIM, after all the relevant data is already available from most simulators .

Indeed, a partnership with Microsoft, who listens in to everything its fanbase has to say about its products, is for the best. I was on the brink of jumping in and paying Kaemmer for his product as a service. Maybe Bill can learn some and charge us a monthly subscription to Windows as well.
 
Iracing AI is the best out there. I confirm that. The problem is with the simulation itself. With all the money they are grabbing over the years, this title should be the best simulation on the planet. But it is not. I prefer iracing of 2008.

I have a one year subscription but rarely use it. For example i bought their nascar truck. And you know what: the truck in asrx (a free old sim) is way better. The iracing one was just floating on the track (kentucky).
 
now iracing will be a good simracing at least but just one think they need to do is remove subscription each month to play iracing that will be a GOAT Racing game
 
iRacing is not my sim but great to hear single player AI is finally heading in this direction, other sims will eventually follow suit. Given the advancement of Generative AI in recent years I don't see how it can't make a huge difference in simracing AI, and should be relatively easy to implement and continuously improve. The future of simracing could be realistic and challenging racing with no more griefers and T1 mayhem!
 
Having played Forza Motorsport '24 (or whatever it's called), and the drivertar setup - god help iRacing.

In any game I've played, and its many over the decades, it is without doubt the worst implementation of AI I've ever seen.

In this, it's also the best... the reason, they do something funky to replicate other real drivers into how the cars behave.

That's a great idea, in some ways I've found the racing intense, with great AI battles. As a simcade it's great.

But... most of the time, I get punted off in the first, second, third... and so on, corners. It really is art imitating life.

The tactic with Forza, hang back and avoid in the first few corners, there'll be no quarter given. Then hope you've got enough gas to get past the places you lost later in the race.
 
Interestingly enough iRacing already offers the best AI in all of simracing to me. I say "interestingly" because singleplayer races are not at all the main focus of the sim. And yet they manged.

And you need to pay a subscription to play offline with content you bought separetely. Having a good AI sometimes is not enough to be the best single player alternative.

Don't get me wrong, I like iRacing, but it's not the sim I usually consider for offline racing. And I have the impression that I'm not alone.

i agree that its a smack in the face to not have an offline mode where you can use your content for singleplayer races without an active subscription, but this point has been made since forever and iRacing does not care and it will never change, so i grew tired repeating it is all.
