It is exactly one month until Forza Horizon 4 will no longer be available to purchase online, and yet its player base seems stronger than ever. Then again, its growth is no doubt due to its imminent doom.

Back in June 2024, Playground Games and Microsoft announced that the fourth entry to popular open world racing game franchise, Forza Horizon 4 would be leaving online store fronts by the end of the year. In fact, the game set in the North of the UK will no longer be available to purchase from Steam or the Microsoft Store from 14 December.

Well, that announcement clearly got racers panicking as recent months have seen a dramatic increase in player numbers on Steam. If you want to join the herd ploughing through dry stone walls and launching over Edinburgh Castle, you had better be quick to secure your copy of the game.

Forza Horizon 4 On The Up, And Its Way Out

Following the announcement of its delisting some five months ago, Forza Horizon 4 experienced a major period of growth in Steam player numbers. In fact, our monthly series of the Most Played Racing Games on Steam clearly tracked the title's gain in popularity.

Prior to the news, FH4 sat at a respectable average player base of around 4,300 people, as evident in May's round up of Steam figures. But just one month later, that figure had grown to over 9,200 players at any one time with a peak of over 75,000 in the month of June 2024, an all-time record for the game.

By July, the now-six-year-old title was the most-played racing game on Steam, out-doing the likes of Assetto Corsa, BeamNG and its successor, Forza Horizon 5. And whilst other delisting stories concerning The Crew 2 took the spotlight away from the open world Forza racer, the British destination still attracts a great deal of players with average player numbers still exceeding the 10,000 mark.

Clearly, fans of the game voted with their wallets and their time immediately following the news of Forza Horizon 4's delisting. It comes alongside a long list of other games falling by the wayside like theProject CARS franchise and the original The Crew's disappearance from even owners' libraries.

Can I Continue Playing FH4?

Yes, despite falling off virtual - and physical - shelves, those that already own Forza Horizon 4 will still have access to all of its game modes with online servers remaining open and the single player mode obviously available.

Whilst the game will still cycle through seasons each week following its current monthly rotor, those that enjoy the playlists and their seasonal challenges will be disappointed. Playground Games will no longer curate Festival Playlists for Forza Horizon 4, giving players far less to do after completing the main progression of its career.

It is now on sale at Miscrosoft Store.
installing from MS store is less usable.
Its in a hidden and restricted folder and other users cannot access it.
Installed on steam is far better.
e.g. if you'll have to reinstall your windows and though the game is on another HDD/SSD, you'll have to download all your MS Games again. With a Steam installation you don't have to.
