After arguably the most controversial race weekend of the season so far, Formula One turns to one of the most iconic locations on the 2024 calendar. São Paulo, Brazil for the final instalment of this triple-header string of race weekends.

Brazil is always a highlight for drivers and fans alike with its incredible history, both classic and modern. Senna's first home Grand Prix victory in 1991, the controversial 2008 finale and Lewis Hamilton's unbelievable last-to-first effort at the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix. With how 2024 is shaping up, it looks like we could be in for another fantastic race weekend.

Can Lando realistically beat Max Verstappen?

To nobody's surprise, it was Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’s Forza Motorsport open-lobby-style clash in Mexico which has been the talk of the town in Sao Paulo. This follows an incident-packed trip to Austin, Texas the week before.

Whilst the duo might be friends off the track, there is no correlation when they get behind the wheel. How far will Verstappen push his luck and what will become of his title fight if he continues to break the rules? Could Norris turn the season around?

To become champion in 2024, Norris needs to reduce an intimidating 47-point gap to leader Verstappen. However, whilst this is a big ask of the Papaya driver in four events, the Dutchman has not been immune to reliability and consistency problems this year, so Norris is still well and truly in the fight.

Whatsmore, in the final practice session on Friday, Norris lead a British 1-2-3 with Mercedes' Geroge Russell and Kevin Magnussen's replacement this weekend, Oliver Bearman, filling in the final slot. Norris is looking fired up and ready for a fight. There is no doubt Verstappen is faster than the 15th he managed in FP3, he never put the soft on his RB20 so we will have to wait until Sprint Qualifying gets underway to see his true potential.

Kick-Sauber restructure in preparation for Audi takeover in 2026

Ex-Ferrari Head of Race Strategy and Sporting Relations, Inaki Rueda, will join the Kick-Sauber team in 2025 as part of the team’s ongoing restructuring in preparation for the team to morph into Audi’s Formula 1 team when the new rules come into play for the 2026 season.

Rueda has been unemployed in the world of Formula One since leaving Ferrari at the end of last season. Rueda will join the Swiss team as a replacement for current strategist, Beat Zehnder, who will be promoted to the new position of Director of Signature Programs and Operations.

Current Haas driver, Nico Hulkenberg, was officially announced back in April as the first driver to be announced for Sauber and then into Audi's Formula One effort in 2026. The speculation has been rising continuously over who will partner with the German, current drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are not favourites for the seat. Bottas has admitted he ‘can’t do more’ with his Kick Sauber and therefore cannot show why he deserves a seat in 2025.

Current Formula 2 championship points leader, Gabriel Bortoleto, is making waves in the paddock with this second Audi seat up for grabs. Talking to the media in Brazil, three-time world champion Max Verstappen had this to say about the future driver lineup at Sauber.

“If I was Sauber I would’ve signed him already (Gabriel Bortoleto), especially because young drivers are the future and it will be hard for him to adjust in 2026."

“It’s always good to get used to a team already for a year, make your mistakes here and there, get integrated well, understand the car a bit. You always feel much more prepared and comfortable when you then start in ’26.” - Max Verstappen

Kevin Magnussen to miss Brazilian sprint race.

Danish Haas driver, Kevin Magnussen, is due to miss out on all of Friday's free practice running as well as Saturday's sprint race at the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend. Haas' young reserve driver Oliver Bearman will take the wheel of Magnussen's VF-24 for those two days.

Early on Friday morning, Haas announced Magnussen had become physically unwell and would not be able to compete in the Friday and Saturday sessions. There is hope that the Dane will be able to compete in Sunday's big race, but time will tell.

"Kevin Magnussen will not participate in Friday’s track running at the São Paulo Grand Prix after suffering from sickness. Our official reserve driver Oliver Bearman will take over driving duties. The team wishes Kevin a quick recovery and will provide a further update in due course." - Team Haas

We want to put some real effort into implementing your ideas where they can be done. To kick this off we will start with a suggestion made by OverTake member Pete Conway. The idea is to run a simple contest around F1 podium predictions. Here are the rules:

Table.png

Points system:

There will be 10 points awarded for guessing the right position and the correct name and 5 points for guessing the right name, but the wrong position. The table above is purely to illustrate how it works (Mexico has been used as an example) At the end of the season we will award the overall winner one year of Premium membership here on OverTake worth €12.99!

The whole Johnny Herbert stewardship thing is a hot potato right now… I’m unsure in the multi billion world of F1 why there is not a consistent team of properly paid stewards, the same at each meeting… rather than a rolling change of these important roles at each race.
The reason there isn't a 'paid' squad to oversee every race is because of just such a Johnny Herbert scenario, and you cannot risk the stewards having a personal view or vendatta clouding their judgment race after race for the whole season.
As to what would be better I don't know perhaps the FIA have got it right in allowing a varying view of the rules race by race, at least that way the drivers never know how far they can push the rules, in a similar way to the random timing light start procedure you can't predict it, you can only put it in the ballpark and act innocent afterwards, it works for Ronaldo

I watched the McLaren and Lando fanclub show, there was even the occasional brief chat about other teams and even a rare comment on some of the overtakes down the field, but for the most part it was about how McLaren are doing the right thing and how Oscar will wait to hand the race over, and of course how Brilliant the team and Lando was... wow. SPOILERS!
The Sky announcers were convinced Ferrari had the best race pace, but COTA clearly showed Lando ran down Leclerc and could have gotten Sainz if there had been more laps(I know, woulda, coulda) I was surprised they kept Lando behind as long as they did, his tires must have been suffering. They should have performed the maneuver as soon as Max passed Charles.

I can see that Oscar isn't being the teaboy and helmet carrier that they want him to be, the McLaren golden fella needs to go take wins for himself and not get hand-outs

Max has received a penalty, how are they going to give Norris more of a gift?
The FIA is doing everything it can to prevent Max from becoming champion.
Just stop with those ridiculous penalties everywhere!!

This clearly shows Max going for the overtake on Piastri while still under VSC conditions. He actually goes far far deeper into the overtake before Piastri outbrakes him.

If this was any other driver attempting an overtake under VSC conditions they would get a penalty, so I don't see why Max should be any different.

As it is it seems that McLaren have the superior car at the moment. Max knows this and that his championship is under threat, so he's reverting to form - a hyper aggressive and uncompromising driver who's prepared to sail very close to the winds with regards to rules and sportsmanship.

In some ways I suppose it's applaudable as you have to have something of that mindset to win, but equally in some ways it's lamentable as it means he's losing respect and having penalties piled on him.

In that respect it's less that the FIA is doing everything it can to prevent Max from becoming champion, but more that Max is doing everything he can to prevent himself from becoming champion.

I have spoken out before about the many punishments for everyone. I'm not a fan of that myself.
What are we looking at, we want action on the track, Max didn't have any advantage. If we decide the world championship kick this way? is crazy!

The 20 second penalty in Mexico was also far too much for Max Verstappen. You can also question that.

Nothing grated my mind like when Lewis would get a 5 second penalty for some on-track issue. He had a car that would win often by minutes and they thought 5 seconds was a sufficient slap on the wrist.
Max's TWO penalties at Mexico, two separate penalties, were enforced due to more than just what occurred at Mexico. COTA was just the week before and the Stewards saw the same behavior at both events. There is no doubt you or anyone else could argue that 10 seconds was excessive. But the penalty system is more than just a ticket for speeding, it is also behavior modification. Keep doing what you are doing and we'll add even MORE to the penalty next time. I'm actually surprised he wasn't pulled in for a Stop & Hold for the second infraction as that was purely retaliation against Lando and had no connection to the race. He did not try and control the corner, he tried to run Lando off the road. His own form of behavior modification you might say: 'Keep trying to pass me and you will be eating concrete.'

Ohh you're talking about Lewis who pushed Max off the track at copse corner. If you're all about punishment, did he ever get a real punishment for that??

And yes... two penalties in Mexico, but not much happened with the first penalty so ten seconds would have been enough. Now the FIA is kicking and they can expect a riot from people who don't agree.
that's exactly what you get for randomly giving a penalty for everything

Watch Sky this morning was only torrent up
But for once they not whining so I watched......

1 and 2 and 3 and ...........

lol

"Max is faster then Charles' ..........McLaren put their tails between their legs, pussies.

Handbag swapping:
When Michael did it he was pure evil even though it was not against any rule other then
"sportsmanship" Sure you can argue that but I don't think people pay the wages would agree.
So they change the rule no team orders, which was the first smart thing they did.
Now they allow team orders again but when Oscar and Lando do it's not bad sportsmanship or anything else. Even Rubens would say today yeah all fair there

Bunch of Hypocrites lool ;)

======================

even Crofty is doing it now ....
Max "Charles Man making too many mistakes"
Crofty " ? welll that's good isn't it ?" pure sarcasm
No Crofty he wants Charles to be closer to Lando, but you knew that.

P.S.
Oh and what I said about thinking Max, win or lose, may leave F1 has just firmed imho.
Another Sky whine about Mexico was Max moving under brakes.
Yet here I see at least Liam do the same and nothing and they just fob it off.

Piastri was making the gap between him and Lando much bigger than when the VSC started.
He was holding Verstappen off a bit too much.
That was also not allowed.
In the end Verstappen did not overtake, he just drove up next to him.
So i think that's why there was no penalty in the end.
