After arguably the most controversial race weekend of the season so far, Formula One turns to one of the most iconic locations on the 2024 calendar. São Paulo, Brazil for the final instalment of this triple-header string of race weekends.

Brazil is always a highlight for drivers and fans alike with its incredible history, both classic and modern. Senna's first home Grand Prix victory in 1991, the controversial 2008 finale and Lewis Hamilton's unbelievable last-to-first effort at the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix. With how 2024 is shaping up, it looks like we could be in for another fantastic race weekend.

Can Lando realistically beat Max Verstappen?

To nobody's surprise, it was Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’s Forza Motorsport open-lobby-style clash in Mexico which has been the talk of the town in Sao Paulo. This follows an incident-packed trip to Austin, Texas the week before.

Whilst the duo might be friends off the track, there is no correlation when they get behind the wheel. How far will Verstappen push his luck and what will become of his title fight if he continues to break the rules? Could Norris turn the season around?

To become champion in 2024, Norris needs to reduce an intimidating 47-point gap to leader Verstappen. However, whilst this is a big ask of the Papaya driver in four events, the Dutchman has not been immune to reliability and consistency problems this year, so Norris is still well and truly in the fight.

Whatsmore, in the final practice session on Friday, Norris lead a British 1-2-3 with Mercedes' Geroge Russell and Kevin Magnussen's replacement this weekend, Oliver Bearman, filling in the final slot. Norris is looking fired up and ready for a fight. There is no doubt Verstappen is faster than the 15th he managed in FP3, he never put the soft on his RB20 so we will have to wait until Sprint Qualifying gets underway to see his true potential.

Kick-Sauber restructure in preparation for Audi takeover in 2026

Ex-Ferrari Head of Race Strategy and Sporting Relations, Inaki Rueda, will join the Kick-Sauber team in 2025 as part of the team’s ongoing restructuring in preparation for the team to morph into Audi’s Formula 1 team when the new rules come into play for the 2026 season.

image_2024-10-31_145406700.png

Rueda has been unemployed in the world of Formula One since leaving Ferrari at the end of last season. Rueda will join the Swiss team as a replacement for current strategist, Beat Zehnder, who will be promoted to the new position of Director of Signature Programs and Operations.

Current Haas driver, Nico Hulkenberg, was officially announced back in April as the first driver to be announced for Sauber and then into Audi's Formula One effort in 2026. The speculation has been rising continuously over who will partner with the German, current drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are not favourites for the seat. Bottas has admitted he ‘can’t do more’ with his Kick Sauber and therefore cannot show why he deserves a seat in 2025.

Current Formula 2 championship points leader, Gabriel Bortoleto, is making waves in the paddock with this second Audi seat up for grabs. Talking to the media in Brazil, three-time world champion Max Verstappen had this to say about the future driver lineup at Sauber.

“If I was Sauber I would’ve signed him already (Gabriel Bortoleto), especially because young drivers are the future and it will be hard for him to adjust in 2026."

“It’s always good to get used to a team already for a year, make your mistakes here and there, get integrated well, understand the car a bit. You always feel much more prepared and comfortable when you then start in ’26.” - Max Verstappen

Kevin Magnussen to miss Brazilian sprint race.

Danish Haas driver, Kevin Magnussen, is due to miss out on all of Friday's free practice running as well as Saturday's sprint race at the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend. Haas' young reserve driver Oliver Bearman will take the wheel of Magnussen's VF-24 for those two days.

Early on Friday morning, Haas announced Magnussen had become physically unwell and would not be able to compete in the Friday and Saturday sessions. There is hope that the Dane will be able to compete in Sunday's big race, but time will tell.

"Kevin Magnussen will not participate in Friday’s track running at the São Paulo Grand Prix after suffering from sickness. Our official reserve driver Oliver Bearman will take over driving duties. The team wishes Kevin a quick recovery and will provide a further update in due course." - Team Haas

We want to put some real effort into implementing your ideas where they can be done. To kick this off we will start with a suggestion made by OverTake member Pete Conway. The idea is to run a simple contest around F1 podium predictions. Here are the rules:

Table.png

Points system:

There will be 10 points awarded for guessing the right position and the correct name and 5 points for guessing the right name, but the wrong position. The table above is purely to illustrate how it works (Mexico has been used as an example) At the end of the season we will award the overall winner one year of Premium membership here on OverTake worth €12.99!

Watching Sprint Qualifying... they really need to do something about cars going slowly or even coming to a stop when they are coming out of the pit lane.

Ohh here we are, mclaren starting and looking really strong here, as expected.. not the best track for ferrari and i think max will have to manage his advantage also considering his 5 place penalty grid?

NO SPOLIERS ........PLEASE !!

does the thread say "SPOLIER " ?

No

Sky whining again, bad sportsmanship, universal disapproval, different mentality

FFS the wankers went on about it for 15 minutes.

and oh look 40% pick Max because as I they think all this is nothing but BS !
..universal disapproval, yeah right whatever you say Sky !

Go on Lando put him in the wall, I dare you, you tosser.

I not watching them but I bet myself they would be whining, back to F1TV

Gilles Villeneuve would be turning in his grave.
Go ask René Arnoux what he thinks.

I often remember that ther are folks the other side of the world that just might see it later than me, so I try not to bang spoilers out, I do however like to post celebrations for the guys that I feel did well.

As for Sky TV, well look DD just because a fella shouts on the mic that Max is a devil from the dark side doesn't make it true, in fact his patriotism is likely to backfire because many watch F1 fans remember that adrenalin flows and things are said and done, like James Hunt thumping a Marshall, so many of those folks just ignore 'Crofty the Clown' and Brundle Brit.

"put him in the wall" yeah, yeah, been there done that and I'm still here say's Max.

Many salute Villeneuve but forget about Arnoux...he was good, fantastic exciting racing between them, a time when cars didn't explode and cover the track with razor sharp debris when they made contact (aluminium doesn't do that)

Of course they have right to say whatever they like.
Just do they have to go on about it for 15 minutes ?
I still think calling Max " dangerous " was way over the top.
All they do is pander to Lando fanboys on social media.

What's next they bang wheels and he gets gets disqualified from season.
Penalty only one driver in history ever received.
Sure ban him from race and make him undertake mandatory sessions.
He did that off his own bat, support of drink driving speeding and other things I remember.

Yet Great Britain especially will always make him out a villain for a couple of brain fades in a decade just like they do Max.

Practice Qualifying in the ends stands for nothing but I bet Lando is pissed that Oscar won't take a back seat, stop costing him points and be his blocker. Max needs no help nor gets it.

Am I the only one thinks Sergio is sandbagging, more to this then meets the eye.
They not going to give him a 2 season handshake if he don't help out.

Yuki 0 Liam 1

Finally won't surprise me in the least, win or lose if Max quit F1 end of year and moves onto Endurance.

Sky were salivating discussing Dick Dastardly! Sky really wind me up sometimes.

Well yeah and I always made clear I OCD and suffer depression so yeah they rev me up.
In end though I will make jokes about everything is my way to deal with it.

Honestly the first time it irked me, I will never forget that Monaco were Eddie, Damon, Martin and I forget who else stood ( oh right of course noddy himself David who could have killed himself and MS ) standing around on International TV bagging Michael for his transgressions, like ancient history.
It was like they were saying right now we own F1 and here is how it was........

That is the most pathetic misplaced rant I have ever seen or heard.
So that day they set a precedence imho.

I think the sprint qualifying may have worked out to Norris' advantage.
I can't imagine Mclaren allowing their drivers to fight over the first corner.

If Piastri gives him room, then Norris can make it into the lead at the first corner with Piastri dropping in behind.
I don't see Leclerc being able to get in front of Verstappen at the start, so we can expect Piastri trying to keep Verstappen back for as long as possible.

Its ideal circumstances for Piastri to apply Verstappen tactics to Verstappen. But maybe Verstappen doesnt even have the speed to catch up. Still, go Verstappen :)

strangely now rewatching some of the historic championship winning or losing ‘moves’ (read clashes) between Senna, Prost, Hill, Schumacher and Villeneuve etc… they just look so very very wrong by todays driving standards… which is why the current Dick Dastardly moves are meeting with so much disdain…

So it does show rules and standards have improved today but also the F1 watchers perception of what is on and what is not has also moved too… and that’s good thing…

I’m not sure that anyone would allow any of the past incidents have decided a championship nowadays but I might be wrong there…

How incidents are now viewed has nothing to do with objectivity but is mainly based on emotion and which driver is preferred in advance. The worst thing is that you would expect the FIA to only interpret the rules. But Johny Herbert's statements have nothing to do with the rules and are simply bashing a Dutch driver publicly based on his own emotions. If I were ultimately responsible for the FIA, I would give Herbert a final warning for this and fire him on the spot next time.

I am removing any personal ‘emotion’ myself on this point, unlike others I’m not a fan boy of any particular driver at all… I like to see good fair racing between drivers, whoever it might be in the lead.

I am more interested in technology and design in F1 myself to be fair.

The whole Johnny Herbert stewardship thing is a hot potato right now… I’m unsure in the multi billion world of F1 why there is not a consistent team of properly paid stewards, the same at each meeting… rather than a rolling change of these important roles at each race.

Yes I get that ex F1 racers know the score, etc inside out and are best as part of the steward team to understand and interpret drivers actions to decide wrongs and rights etc…

I just know if the championship is again settled under dubious circumstances this year (as in someone having the other championship contender off in a clash) that it will leave a very bad taste in a number of peoples mouths at to the validity of F1… the current drive to survive mentality isn’t always the best… if F1 relies on controversy only to be great then that is a concern…

Yes I agree with you and I also am afraid that F1 relies to much on controversy.
