As it gets colder in many parts of the world, more players are back behind the virtual wheels of their favorite racing games. Here are the most played racing games on Steam in September 2024.

A sale and a big update seemingly go a long way in the racing games sphere: While BeamNG.drive posted strong numbers once again following its 0.33 update, the title had to make room for a new leader on the chart in September of 2024 - The Crew 2.

The open-world racer rocketed past every title on our list, posting record numbers in September - thanks to a sale that saw the game discounted to about €1 and the announcement of an offline patch following the messy Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown launch.

Similarly, the game's successor The Crew Motorfest, which is also going to be playable offline once its online life cycle ends, saw a significant increase in players, jumping to similar numbers as TDUSC.

Meanwhile, Rennsport made its Steam debut. Unfortunately, no data is available on how the game performed on the platform, so it remains to be seen how it stacks up against the competition.

So, is Horizon's 4 going to get delisted or something?
I wonder because there's a few recent features here on new stuff for H5, yet it's H4 that is leading the way

maybe because most players own it through a XBox subscription or bought it in MS store and are not counted on steam. this charts are in a time where you can get a game through several stores, total nonsense for most games.

I believe it is coming to end of life, in that they have given a date when it is no longer available to be purchased (through any storefront) so a bunch of people have jumped in.

I am starting to enjoy seeing these Steam player reports. Now, if there was a way to make money on investing in player numbers?

My obligatory comment that I am going to repeat until it's acknowledged with a huge disclaimer in the monthly thread... this data is not representative. The majority of games are also on different platforms or started exclusively on other platforms, may be on a subscription service on other platfroms, as well as 3rd party resellers can only sell keys to the other platforms, etc. This is a very biased and inaccurate comparison pragmatically speaking if your goal is to compare the popularity/player counts of the listed games.

I am really surprised that a fully developed, fully funded, fully solvent game owned by a fully stable company such as LMU has such low numbers.

I've moaned about what I thought were misleading articles here myself before, but in this case I think the criticism is a bit misplaced - the 'disclaimer' is pretty clear - it's the title. Every month it clearly says 'Most Played Games On Steam', not 'Most Played Games'. I think most readers can tell the difference :)

With that said Steam probably accounts for such a large percentage of 'proper sim' sales that the other platforms and stores can effectively be ignored if you just want an idea of how relatively popular each sim game is. And the other stores / platforms don't actually publish a nice monthly summary afaik, making comparisons hard.

Yep, Forza Horizon and Gran Turismo sell lots of copies on their 'home' platforms that don't show up in the above PC-only chart - but I'd be shocked if the order of the other games available on Xbox / PS was different to on PC. And most people look at the order rather than the actual player counts - (which are ludicrously tiny compared to the most popular non-sim games).

My main takeaway from this list every month is that Simcade / arcade games will always hugely outsell 'proper' sims because they're more accessible - and while RD/OT carries stories about anything on wheels the target audience here seems to be 'proper' sim racers - probably because they buy the expensive hardware advertised on this site, unlike someone who plays Forza Horizon / GT with an console controller.

The problem with this situation as I've noted in the various 'demise of LMU' threads is that 'proper' sims probably cost more to make than simcade games, whilst appealing to a much smaller market - but that's another discussion.

TL;DR: I'd like to see a cross-platform comparison too, but as noted above the data is hard to find (I tried and my Google-fu failed) - if you'd like to do some research and post a better, cross-platform list I'd like to see it. I'm pretty sure OT would like to publish it too :)

This is a very biased
How is this biased, and what title is it being unfair too? Its simply a steam metric. Sure it is incomplete as to all platforms, but steam is probably the most popular platform and should give a decent representation of the whole.

I don't particularly care what title it is unfair to, I have no horse in this race. Forza titles must be much more popular on the MS Store thanks to Game Pass / Play Anywhere if anything else. Ubisoft games weren't on Steam for a long time. EA/Ubi titles have 3rd party keys that activate on the EA App/Ubi Connect. And so on. I own a lot of these games and they aren't concentrated on Steam for sure, even though I prefer Steam over anything else.

What bugs me, and this is a reply to @justageezer as well, is that this data is taken by the users at face value based on the comments (just in these couple of comments above... EA WRC having low player counts, F1 24 being less popular than ACC). It is one thing that title clearly states "on Steam", a less knowledgable user doesn't have to know which title is on other platforms as well and that the data is therefore skewed, not representative, can lead to false conclusions.

In this day and age of information being taken out of context and manipulated constantly, I think transparency even in unimportant stuff like this would be an important value to preserve. A simple disclaimer and * next to the game title with a brief comment where else it's available and not counted would make this a lot more transparent, even if only the Steam numbers are shown and only Steam is mentioned in the title.
