Fanatec have unveiled a new accessory allowing for more customization: The DD Shaft Extension can help sim racers with optimizing the position of their monitor and wheel base.

A few days after gamescom 2024, Fanatec have unveiled a new piece of hardware; an accessory, to be exact. The Fanatec DD Shaft Extension is just what its name implies - an extension to bring the wheelside quick release closer to the player or to enable them to mount their wheel base further back on their rigs.

The benefits of this are explained quickly: With an extension, monitors can be mounted right behind the actual steering wheel much easier compared to the stock version of Fanatec's wheel bases, as it can be difficult to find a satisfactory setup where you will not touch the monitor when turning the wheel or have the wheel base touch the monitor.

Unfortunately, the DD Shaft Extension is not compatible with all Fanatec wheel bases. Instead, only the ClubSport DD and DD+ Wheel Bases are listed for it. The extension also seems to only support the QR2 when it comes to quick release adapters - which makes sense considering both bases come with the QR2 by default.

The extension is made from "fully CNC-machined aluminium" according to its product description and increases the distance between wheel and wheel base by 160 mm. It can already be ordered via the Fanatec website and is listed at €99.95/$99.95.

Unlike many DIY solutions, the DD Shaft Extension allows for the functionality of Fanatec wheels to be maintained out of the box without any additional connections. This also means that console sim racers should be able to use the part for their setup without issue.

Similarly, Asetek Simsports have come up with their own extension solution when they presented their standalone Invicta Quick Release Adapter in 2023, which also enables wheels of different manufacturers to function. The QR comes with three different lengths for sim racers to choose from.

Shaft extension... there are pills you can buy for that, aren't there? :p

I just wish it was Thrustmaster who did this shaft extension. Imagine the jokes! :roflmao:

"Oh honey, I just bought a shaft extension for my Thrustmaster toy"

Knowing it's a Fanatec product, can't wait to see first reports of extension breaking and ripping someone's arm off,

I don't think reliability will be a issue unless you hang off your wheel like Clyde :p

Issue for me is you can't use a dash fixed to DD.
Like the monitor you have to bring the dash forward means a
new mount at very least besides lookin odd and out of place.

If you have a 3D printer and come up with your own design for the holder you can mount it directly to the shaft using the top hole with a longer bolt and nut.
Or you can even use all three holes without the bottom one to mount a holder.
But it will rotate with the steering wheel compared to stationary attached to the base and the DDU/phone must be firmly attached to the holder.

Nice and all but no good for the dash I posted pic of and not just it would turn but the extra weight on axle ;)
The whole idea in the design of DSD ( which I have ) and similar types use existing front plate mounting holes.

This is one reason I was looking at Mini Alpha 110mm vs 250mm ( height ) for CSL DD just to get clear screen.

Another option would be to buy 4 black anodized extension rods that screw into DD front plate.
The dash ends could attach with Allen bolts. That would be stiff enough.

Of course that would not work well for behind the dash as you would need to lift the monitor
above the top of the DD to clear the extensions which would defeat the purpose hey ;)

Very much identical to the the pic I posted above, awfully high that screen, not sure why ?
to get the screen like 1 inch closer ?

Do you prefer licensed hardware?

  • Yes for me it is vital

  • Yes, but only if it's a manufacturer I like

  • Yes, but only if the price is right

  • No, a generic wheel is fine

  • No, I would be ok with a replica
