Le Mans Ultimate Player Count Surges After Le Mans 24 Hours Finish

Player counts for sim racing titles usually rise after updates. They did on June 10 for Le Mans Ultimate - but did increase even more after the actual 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The hype for the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans was undeniable: 23 entries in the Hypercar class alone, a qualifying that promised close racing, the prospect of rain mixing things up - fans seemed to be in for a treat. And they were, as the 92nd running of the endurance race had it all, including multiple cars still in the running for overall victory just a few hours from the end.

It would seem that this spilled over to the virtual Circuit de La Sarthe as well. Le Mans Ultimate is the official simulation of the WEC, and while it does not have the full 2024 grid yet, it does feature the 2024 liveries for the Hypercars that are already in the game since its June 10 update - and the BMW M Hybrid V8 that made its WEC debut this season, including the Le Mans-only Art Car livery.

The update was received well in general, and it did boost the player numbers. While LMU had usually peaked at around 500 concurrent players daily ahead of the update, the daily peaks never fell below 1.200 since the patch was released. However, the player number graph has another sharp increase on June 16 - right after the checkered flag flew in Le Mans.

From Watching Le Mans To Driving It Virtually

It would appear that plenty of sim racers switched off their TVs and wanted to scratch the itch of throwing around their favorite Hypercars at the virtual version of Le Mans after an exciting race, with multiple online events set at the track available.

Indeed, compared to the days before, the game peaked at 2.043 concurrent players at 16:00 UTC, two hours after the real race had ended. The last time it had exceeded 2.000 concurrent players was in March, following a peak of 4.691 players on release in February.

Of course, this is still significantly lower than Assetto Corsa Competizione, for instance (as both titles focus on a specific type of racing instead of featuring many different ones). Interestingly, the ACC numbers shot up after the release of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife on April, the player peak doubling compared to the days before - but around the real-life Nürburgring 24h, the numbers remained relatively stable between about 5.000 and 6.500 concurrent players.

Could this translate to more awareness for the game? At least on the German broadcast on Eurosport, there was no mention of LMU, and the on-track ad banners highlighted Forza Motorsport (which also saw a slight increase immediately after Le Mans) instead. However, considering the big interest by fans at the LMU hands-on tents at the European rounds, the demand for a dedicated WEC game might be bigger than initially assumed.

The question is whether or not LMU can keep the player numbers up until the next big update.

Did the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans make you hop in the rig for some laps in LMU following the checkered flag as well? Let us know on Twitter @OverTake_gg or in the comments below!

Loosen the ARB at the front a bit, and tightening the rear helps. Put the brake bias a bit forward.
That’s good advice! I usually reduce the diff ramps to 2 or 4 and take a bit of preload out to get some more turn-in. Seems to be a universal thing in the stock setups :O_o:

"In Spain, South Africa, or Brazil, it would be: 12 500,50 or 12.500,50"
Yes, also in Italy. The fullstop is to read better the number of zero, for ex. one towsand is 1.000, one milion is 1.000.000.
The decimal (or cents) are after the coma, for ex 1.000, 46.

The lack of VR and even TrackIr keeps me from driving LMU.
It has potential to be the goto WEC simulation, but updates are simply coming too slowly.

I look forward to see the changes for the Hypercars ERS system in AMS2.

VR, is that still even a thing? Should plug mine in and see if its still working. I also miss TrackIR, infinitely more usefull but since I have triples im pretty much GTG

Was doing AMS2 @ Le Mans in a Porsche hypercar on my Quest 3.
Nothing comes close to the feeling your are crammed in a claustrophobic small cockpit at 350 km an hour.
Everything is the right scale and depth.
When having the vision aligned properly, you would think you are looking at your own arms turning the wheel.
Driving behind huge GT3 rear ends that block your vision.
You realize how small and low a prototype car is.
Almost feel the height difference in your stomach (brain gets fooled).
Got a 180degree triplescreen setup here too.
Although it drives more relaxed, you don't get the same immersive experience.

Yep this was also my Le Mans "experience" at the weekend, Only had time to do the "12 Laps" of Le Mans but great fun in VR with time acceleration on so you go through that day>night>day transition.

Interesting, so Spa, SA and Br are the opposite to the way we do it. So maybe the author of this article is from there? It would seem that even though we are one planet we do everything different, lol.

Yes, it's still a thing. Around 10-20% of the userbase use it, depending on the game ( AMS2 probably the highest, ACC the lowest ).

Sure, maybe. It's odd that you seem to actively wish for the demise of this title, though.

I can see that, and honestly I wasn't like this in the beginning. I bought the game day 1. And had it wishlist since I could. But I feel like I and many others had been lied to or misinformed/mislead about the product in the beginning. At this point, would I like to see it do well? Sure, I really enjoy WEC/Endurance Racing. But I feel like their "plan of action" will and has hindered this game to the point it becomes another "shoulda, woulda, coulda" games and it'll be placed in the back of the closest with all the others. I mean we JUST got Replay and STILL no damage model. Seriously, they just added a working Replay in the last update. Last update, not day 1 or a month ago, literally days ago they finally added replay.. Replay.. Think about that.

Surge ? 2000 a Surge, am i missing a 0?? after a "major" patch and the biggest event portraied on the game ...

Sigh :/

I bought LMU allmost on the day it was released, but I have not used it much since then. The physics and ffb feel great for me, the graphics are looking good and the audio is very good. But, the loading time of the game is very long (way too long) and the loading time for a track is also way too long. I don't like the user interface, it is not logical for me. It took too much time and energy to set everything up the way I wanted.
In preperation for the Le Mans weekend I had collected all cars and livery's I could find for Assetto Corsa. Setting it up the way I wanted to drive it was done in minutes in Assetto Corsa. The time I needed to search, download and install the mod's in AC together with setting it up in AC was less time then I needed before I could drive the way I wanted in LMU (and I am a long time rF and rF2 user, so it wasn't completely new to me).
When the safety cars were doing their laps during the Le Mans 24 it was time for me to do some laps myself on Le Mans, and what did I use? No LMU but AC. For me, this says it all about the future of LMU. I think LMU faces a very difficult future and it will almost take a miracle to make it a success.

I agree that replay and damage model are 2 important features. Whether nearly 4 months out from initial release is a reasonable timeline to introduce the built-in replays for an EA title, I don't know. I don't work in the industry so I have no idea how involved the programming process is for that but I'll concede that it does feel like a long time for such an integral feature.

Not yet having installed LMU, it's surely great news to me that FFB and physics are good. Quite some core parts of a sim.

Long loading time and confusing GUI I can live with - rF2 simmers are familiar to S397's bid for a replacement of the original and that didn't went well - but could live with that due to good physics and FFB to wait for.

However, replay and damage model should be regarded as pure essentials in 2024.

Moreover a licensed sim should come with full real world grid with every team names, all liveries and driver names from day 1.

And for an endurance sim: Save button. Extremely essential!
SimBim team did that 18 years ago.

As mentioned, I also played this weekend, but like many others, I can't play with more than one class (it's too heavy for my hardware, it crashes straight away), in addition, the loading time for the tracks is still huge. I still haven't been able to play a race online, when I try to enter the lobby, everything freezes or the game closes.

If LMU 24h Lemans esport event was the same fail as the rF2 24h Lemans event, what's the plan ? Verstappen has dug rF2 for ever and will destroy LMU for ever too.
About rF2, s397 has tooken 5 years to change a simple UI without adding really new features, so dont hold your breath for LMU and fast and good developpement, all the basic features from rF2 are still missing in LMU.

Lol I forgot this game existed and that I own it! Would have probably been fun after the real race. Oh well, we had fun in Assetto.
