Relive The 2003 V8 Supercars Season In Automobilista 2

Heavy contact at Bathurst in the 2003 V8 Supercars
The V8 Supercars series is the most popular racing series in Australia. A 2003 V8 Supercars mod throws it back over 20 years in Automobilista 2.

The 2003 V8 Supercars mod by OverTake user MrRandom287 might look like a reskin for Reiza's Super V8 model. However, if you look closely at the four models and 32 designs included in this mod for Automobilista 2, they are far from that, despite them all looking alike (using the Super V8 model in the game).

You have four cars to choose from in this mod: The Ford BA Falcon and AU Falcon, and the Holden VX Commodore and VY Commodore are on the grid - just like in 2003. All of these cars have something different to offer. The handling and driveability of these cars have been altered and adjusted to reflect their real differences in handling and power.

What Are V8 Supercars?

To someone who is not clued up on Australian motorsport, V8 Supercars might seem like a foreign series that is hard for anyone outside of Australia to sink their teeth into. This is not quite the case, however. The series is broadcast live across the globe on the SuperView live streaming service as well as on the Supercars website and YouTube channel - although the difference in time zones might make it difficult to follow the races live.

Bathurst's deadly concrete walls claim another V8 Supercar...

Modern Supercars (without the V8 in the name these days) competition has not strayed all that far from what it was like in the early 2000s, meaning there still is plenty of wheel-to-wheel to action. Tracks like the legendary Bathurst are still present on the calendar, further solidifying Supercars' history to both old and new fans.

What's included?

As mentioned, the 32 cars from the 2003 V8 Supercars series are included alongside custom handling physics for each of them. The debut of the mod's own class within AMS2 is well implemented. This separates this mod from Reiza's V8 Super in a user-friendly and grid-compatible way.

The model of the car is the same as the Reiza car, which is this mod's only real weakness. If you did not know about the handling changes, it could quite easily just be mistaken for a skin pack. That could not be further from the truth, though.

Editor's Experience

While I was trialling this mod pack, I took the 2003 Supercars to Adelaide Street Circuit; and the legendary Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst as well. I spent over four hours learning how to drive these cars on the limit, and I learned a great amount during that period.

The feedback through my wheel gave me more relevant information than the Super V8s, improving an already great class is a great start. I found these cars to be slippy and punishing when you drove them too hard. The Super V8s hold your hand more, almost making it feel like it is hard to spin and make a mistake.

However, these older 2003-spec cars are a bit of a different ball game to most modern machinery. No traction control, ABS, and stability control, combined with a six-speed sequential gearbox, make these cars a real battle to drive smoothly whilst also being competitive.

The 2003 pack cars, across all four variants, all feel on the edge and very engaging to drive. I would highly recommend them to anyone who loves old-school touring car racing. To be fast, you have to be right on the limit - which is tough, but thrilling in these high-power, low-downforce beasts.

Oh, bogan V8s. I love watching these when I can, and should really give them a try.

I had hoped the MSG gameplan would be a success and would lead to a few series specific titles, If they hadn't screwed that up the Supercars would have been a perfect platform alongside Indy, Nascar, Le Mans and BTCC.

Maybe in another decade, Hopefully before motor racing as we understand it it becomes a thing of the past.

It’s very subjective.
I see not a big gap between the AIs in almost all the sims

There are only 2 exceptions: rF2 could be best if they weren’t bump you from behind all the time.

And of course raceroom imo best AI
It is subjective because my experience of the AC AI is pretty bad, while the AMS2 AI keeps getting better. I love AC but it routinely throws up glitches, AMS2 is a much smoother and more consistent experience, which you would expect given its still actively being developed. For every great AC track there is a terrible one.

I am completely ok with the AC AI
If you’re not that slow so they push you of the track, if you have proper AI lines and if you know which cars will work well with more or less aggressivenes settings, you can have a great experience m.

I am also playing AMS2 a lot. But like said above in this case (v8) there is no question which sim I choose

If you start the conversation with 'sorry, but I do it this way' what are you apologising for exactly? Noone cares about how you like to play it. Sure, tell us how great AC is at this thing but leave the emotional baiting at the door.

Sorry but such biased comments annoy me a little.
I don't need to be a fanboy because I play several sims regularly.
It seems the other way around to me, because AMS fanboys seem to be directly hostile to me because I prefer the V8 elsewhere.
Why shouldn't anyone care what I write? That's what forums are for, right?

And that's sorry but - is simply out of respect for the author of the article. Because I have a different opinion but I still don't want to denigrate his opinion.

You could learn something from me when it comes to courtesy

Once again this did not meant to be another my sim vs your sim discussion or which is better or worse. The thing is there are many of the same cars/series existing in diverse sims. Every of those sims provides some really great cars, which aren´t that good within the others.
My opinion only refers to the V8, which I also enjoy driving elsewhere and with a lot more content. So i don´t really understand the "aggressiveness" of some of your comments guys.

I'm assuming English isn't your first language. That's not an insult - we native speakers tend to be very bad at speaking other languages and I have nothing but respect for that skill. "Sorry, but.." isn't commonly used in the way you think it is (particularly online), which is what lead to my misinterpreting your intent. It probably also explains why the tone of other respondents was more aggressive as you mentioned.

FWIW AC is my favourite sim overall. I'm not biased against it or even what you are saying at all. Starting off with "Sorry but..." then following up with how AC is better than AMS2 in an AMS2 article on this site is just something we have seen time and time again and it always leads to pointless bickering.

In 2003 all cars were still using H-pattern dog boxes, would be good to see this reflected in the mod hopefully an easy enough edit to the physics for @MrRandom287

In fact, I only use English online, neither in my private nor at work life.
Then I learned something too, and we sorted it out - it came out wrong. Ok accepted.

Still, I have to say i haven't mentioned AC anywhere as being the better game. It was explicitly about the V8 supercars presented in this article.

Just to clarify: it was really a more or less serious comment regarding the AI in AC. There are countless (sometimes more and sometimes less good) mods for AC, but in the end this sim is nothing more than an extremely good hotlap simulator for me. I love everything about Assetto Corsa except the bad AI. That's a shame as there is so much good content. But if it all works for you and you have fun with the mod, it's all good, that's what matters in the end.
