Most Played Racing Games On Steam In April 2024

Spring has arrived in most of the Northern Hemisphere, and it shows in the player numbers of racing games and sims - with one big exception. Here are the most played racing games on Steam in April 2024.

Nice weather and warm temperatures seem to keep more sim racers out of their rigs, just like every year. The list of most played racing games on Steam in April 2024 shows this trend, with many titles seeing a significant reduction in average player numbers compared to the previous month.

And since BeamNG.drive actually gained a small amount of players, the softbody sandbox driving game has surpassed Forza Horizon 5 at the top of the list once again. Behind them, Assetto Corsa kept things stable, only seeing a very marginal reduction in average players.

However, it is the other Kunos Simulazioni title on the list that saw a big influx of racers. Predictably, the release of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife massively increased interest in Assetto Corsa Competizione - in fact, the GT simulator almost doubled its previous peak of concurrent players. And it could stay that way, with the real-life Nürburgring 24 Hours happening in late May.

Meanwhile, The Crew Motorfest made its Steam debut after previously only being available on the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect on PC. The game ended up in the midfield of our list, right behind Forza Motorsport.

Congratulation to ACC and Kunos are in order. Kunos listened to the player base, brought up The Nordschleife and the players responded.
Not just any Nordschleife, a magnificent version, as Kunos usually delivers.
They took their time, released it when ready, no excuses or apologies necessary, Boom! here it is, enjoy, and we are!
A breath of fresh air, in an environment full of half ass releases and semi developed products. I hope the others are taking notes. :) When looking at their numbers, I think they should. :p

Understand that there would never be the Nordschleife in ACC without Stephane Ratel's SRO group signing organizational agreements with ADAC. No matter how hard Kunos 'listened' to the pleas of the ACC users, he could not have brought Nords into ACC without SRO & ADAC first joining forces.

Very true.
What I understand, is that as soon as Kunos had the opportunity, within their contractual obligations, they delivered and we responded.

What would Studio 397 have thought when they did see this?
It just shows that content and especially new content is king.

LMU is very much a work in progress but there is only so long that people will play within the limited scope that it currently has.

I'm sure Nords bought a lot of people back to ACC but they will also have gone and played some other tracks and re-engaged with the overall game.

I really tried to enjoy ams2 since early access, but I just can't with those physics. Sadly, the pc2 engine seems unfixable at this point.
Each to there own you don't have to like it.

When Nords came out for ACC I decided to give ACC another go. I spent some time on it, got some setups from a mate who likes it etc and after that I'd still pretty much rather play any other sim.

Time to get myself into trouble.

When things like these statistics are released, there is also more back and forth about why certain sims don't "feel right". This is then used as a probable explanation as to why those sims aren't more popular.

If we separate the features of each sim as a reason to play it and focus on the driving of each sim, I don't believe a sims' "drivability" should ever been an issue as to whether it is being played. Using ACC as an example, the only thing that changed in ACC from the last one of these reports is the addition of a single track. Wait until the next edition of this article and ACC will be down. LMU beta was released, people tried it, and now it's on the skids.

If the focus of the player is to " jump in and do quick races" then it would be appropriate to say one sim "drives better than other. Some sim have a canned feel that most people can deal with.

If the focus of the player is to be a "driver", that changes the perception of what is a good sim.

A driver will find a way to drive almost any vehicle. Whether it takes some setup work, adjustments to their style of driving, looking at telemetry, studying replays of practices or just putting in more laps. The challenge drivers have is conquering all cars and all tracks. Gamers want to just drive, not learn to drive.

Learning to drive takes time. The impatience of " this sim has blah blah tire model" is amusing. Most of us have not raced a real car in anger. Our tire model experiences are based on getting work, going on holiday and picking the kids up from school. " You know nothing Jon Snow".

These numbers are useless. It generate the worthiness of any sim based on it is release is nuts.

So you are contradicting yourself.

ACC has occupied a high slot constantly, even before the ring was available, and its content has remained static for a long time.

So its not the "content is king", its whatever community and userbase is already in place. The userbase of the top games in that list is much bigger than the ones at the bottom. We can discuss WHY this is, but that seems to be what causes games to be up or down.

Also, this is totally independent from Sales numbers. A game could have sold a lot, and basically disappear off these charts in a matter of months.

11 years old AC still going strong!
It's going strong only because of its ability to be modded. CM, Pure, VRC, RSS, URD, all the track mods, the drifting, the traffic mods, and everything else has kept it alive. If it was just vanilla AC it would be near the bottom of the played list. This is a good lesson to race sim developers. If you want your sim to have a long-life span make it easily moddable, like rFactor, GTR2, and AC.

Seriously how can you say ACC hasn't had a bump in usage on the back of the new Nords content (based on the admittedly dubious metric that gets used here every month)?

Big bump on ACC, big drop on LMU, games outside simracing have major back and forth movements, and people move away from popular but mediocre titles as northern weather gets warmer and people have better things to do.

No surprises here.

A "bump" in the month when an highly antecipated and advertised piece of content gets released is not a general trend.

That is not remotely what I said. I responded to a post pointing out the lack of players on LMU. From most of the comments and videos I have seen LMU hasn’t retained players in no small part due to the lack of content.

My comment of “content is King” is related to the fact that ACC got new content and gets a massive bump, LMU hasn’t added anything and engagement has dropped off a cliff.

At no point did I equate this to an ongoing trend in increased engagement for ACC. But I’m pretty sure all those players that went back to ACC last month didn’t just do laps of Nords and nothing else.

And i dont agree with that. I dont think the content has nothing to do with it. Or else ACC would be below a lot of games with far more content. ACC already had 5000 players average before the ring came out.

Double negative in you second sentence makes it very difficult to understand what you are trying to get across.

Also you do realise that column one on my post above is average concurrent players and for the last four months none which reach 5000 players even with Nords releasing.

Anyway this is pointless, I’m out.

This is what i am going at:

We can clearly see the "bump" caused by the release of the ring, and then the user count going down and down until it reaches almost the same numbers as before. Proving that its not about content, even new content, what makes a game steadily rise its user count, its something way broader than that.
