Those who have purchased Wreckfest on one of three PC stores can now race online together, a staggering two years after the feature was first discussed.
Those with Wreckfest on Steam, GOG or Epic Games Store can now race online together.
There are still plenty of people smashing into each other on Bugbear Entertainment’s crash-a-thon, but as the years go by and new content support has long ended, the cross-PC-platform support should help stave off empty races at least for a little while yet.
Incredibly, this feature was first mentioned in a development update in November 2022, that stated it was coming “not-so-distant future.” Back then, it also mentioned PC players on Xbox Game Pass, which seems to be omitted in the update, now that it has finally arrived.
A Steam news post by the development team also claims that:
“We're admittedly big fans of crashing here but cars and of course not servers, so we've also gone and given the engine under the hood a fresh change of online oil in an effort to further improve server stability and make sure the servers can handle all the heat while you embark on your wrecking rampage on all platforms.”
Consoles are omitted from this ‘crossplay’ update, although it is worth noting that the game has featured cross-generational play since the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions released in 2021.
So, PS4 can play with PS5, Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S – although PlayStation cannot play with Xbox, and neither can play with those on PC and vice versa. The Nintendo Switch and phone ports are standalone.
It felt as if support for Wreckfest had ended, with the community forum for the game closed, the Finnish team teasing future projects on social media and a proliferation of new job listings from art direction to lead engine programmer up for grabs.
Perhaps then, this is one final update before we find out what Bugbear is working on next. Let us know in the comments below what you think that might be, or on X: @OverTake_gg
