A good looking racing game is only half of what one needs for top screenshots. A complete photo mode is a requirement to getting the perfect shot. So which title has the best combination of these? Let us know in the comments.

In recent years, graphics in games have become increasingly an area of progress, and not just in the sim racing industry. But titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Alan Wake 2 alongside sim racing’s own Automobilista 2, a modded Assetto Corsa and the Forza franchise are looking more and more life-like.

The result is communities forming around the desire to extract the prettiest screen captures possible from their games. Once more, this is especially the case in the sim racing world. Entire Instagram pages dedicate themselves to impressive screenshots from racing games. But what is the best title in which to take said images?

Editor’s Take

Before getting into my personal go-to games for virtual motorsport photography, it is worth noting what I look for. In fact, as aforementioned, a stunning graphics engine is just half of the story when it comes to the best pictures.

What really enables the best screenshots is surely a functional and feature-full photo mode. Usable free cameras and the ability to track cars in motion are a must. In addition, being able to easily alter aperture – the amount of soft focus – and the focal point are equally crucial. It is these two blur enabling settings that allow games to recreate real-life panoramas.

Finally, one must mention that any game that allows for rapid environment modifications means shots can change greatly. Sure, rapidly changing the time of day or weather is not realistic. But it adds to the art.

My Favourite Racing Games for Screenshots

With that in mind, there is no denying that Assetto Corsa remains one of the easiest game for taking stunning images. Thanks to the many mods brought in over the years, the title’s photo mode is essentially a professional camera. When linked to the Cam Tool 2 and Drone Camera, both available on RaceDepartment, this camera comes alive.

Like real life, this comes with a functional polarising lens and allows filters to alter colours, much like how film types impact real images. Elsewhere, one can change the time of day with ease, so perfectly lit shots are a given.

Whilst not quite as functional its original sibling, Assetto Corsa Competizione also can produce some gorgeous racing game screenshots. In the past, we have put together a guide on taking pictures in ACC. But the gist of it is, working the camera and depth of field can be tricky. One you have a grasp of the controls however, both moving and stationary shots are amazing.

Finally, Automobilista 2 has also recently given me the urge to take more shots. Whilst attempting to show off the most recent LMDh cars, I found that the photo mode is much akin to that of ACC. However, its integration of depth of field controls appears to outdo the official SRO title. In fact, setting up both depth of field blur and motion blur are as simple as a few clicks.

It is worth pointing out that iRacing can often look fantastic. Professional screenshotters manage to extract high quality snaps from some of the industry’s top events. However, for the everyday racer, it is about as user friendly as an Apache attack helicopter.

Free cam in VR snapshots and VR video recordings of Abulzz' Targa Florio work, nomatter open sky sunrise, hot lunchtime, rare rainy conditions or the snowy winter edition. Nothing compares.

Sometimes i am making pics just out of gameplay or replay cam and send them to my racing buddy. Never making photo mode "fake pics" ....
And because there is the most variety i drive in AC , it´s obviously 90% AC responsible for the pics (10% wife and kids) ;)

Can't really beat horizon 5 for the easiness of taking nice screenshots in motion in one click.

While AC and ACC are very good for photos I also love MotoGP games and WRC Generations as they have an easy to use photo mode and especially in WRC some beautiful landscapes, one photo I remember taking and see on my desktop every so often was a screenshot of an Audi Quattro driving through a water splash in Kenya and with the sandy safari in the background it is a amazing photo.

I only really drive AMS2 these days, so I'll say that.
This picture was taken during a GT3 race at Bathurst, whilst it's looks great it's even more immersive in VR to see the sun rays come through the trees as you race towards The Cutting, truly gorgeous for screenshots and actual driving.

Gran Turismo 7 has the best photo mode of any racing game or sim IMO.

Settings and features that make sense to a photographer and an end result that is close to photo realistic.

No mods, no gaming pc, no faff, just fire up your PlayStation and GT7 and away you go!

Gran Turismo 4 (yes four)
It gave me some good (ish) racing and opportunities for screenies
though by today's standards they're a little blurred

Didn't have any AC screenshots left on my PC since I don't have AC left on my PC anymore, had to download these from past social media posts. Of course, gotta give a shoutout to the NR2003 community for making this 21 year old game look so good!

Having done my fair share of Screenshots in most of the Sims, I have some criteria that almost must be included in a 'Screenshot Mode / Photo Mode' to be interested now:rolleyes:...much like some may say 'No VR No Buy':roflmao:....the main ingredients are 'Time of Day' / Sun Direction' / 'Depth of Field'...personal opinion only;)

Taking Screenshots can take up a considerable amount of time especially when you set up a Race session knowing that there are going to be screenshots, so for me personally having to anticipate 'Where is the lighting / Sun Direction' going to be when you want a particular shot at a particular area on the Tracks raced on:geek:...not always suitable when pausing the Replay and the lighting / Sun direction is not quite creating the shadow shapes / lighting desired which can waste a considerable amount of time and disappointment....these are only personal preferences only;)

BeamNG is number one at the moment, as I can pause a Replay and no matter what the lighting is like, it can be changed for something more desirable increasing the screenshot success ratio...again personal preferences only;).

...dare I say it but 'Project Cars 3' was also great as the 'Speed Blur' worked well on my preferred screenshot ratio 'Triple Screen'

1 PC3 BMW 2002 at DONINGTON GP in SNOW copy.jpg

1 PROJECT CARS 3 WATSON ROADSTER at MONZA HISTORIC copy.jpg

3 PROJECT CARS 3 MERC CLK LM at OSCHERLEBEN crop copy.jpg

2 PROJECT CARS 3 MERC 300 SL crop copy.jpg
3 PROJECT CARS 3 LOTUS EVIJA at AZURE CIRCUIT copy.jpg

AMS2.

0 WWT RACEWAY OVAL Multiclass copy.jpg
6 AMS2 THUNDERSTORM at HOCKENHEIM crop copy.jpg

5 AMS2 GINETTA G58 at SILVERSTONE crop copy.jpg

Personally like the 'Triple Screen' format as this can not only show the vehicle but the landscape and surrounding environment the vehicle is in thus creating extra interest / shape / shadow and light areas within the screenshot:D...so I tip my hat to the Track Artists as well:inlove:

...just my 2 cents and the ramblings of an old Sim Racer:roflmao:

I really like pCars2 for screens, motion blur looks fine, and the cars are really attractive,
especially the classics. The lighting is excellent.

AC can be very pretty but tweaking the visual settings can get a little tiresome.
