The Gomez Sim Industries Formula Pro Elite V2 sees the Texas-based company revisit its initial stand-out hit for 2024.

Over three years since the release of the first GSI FPE sim racing wheel, the updated model still features the impervious build quality we have come to expect alongside a formula or LMP-style silhouette. Having held a pre-production model at the Sim Formula Europe event, we can vouch for the solidity.

On the front are the expected LCD touchscreen (customisable read-outs can be created with the ubiquitous SimHub PC software) and rev-indicating lights. They are now joined by LED backlit push buttons with UV-printed icons.

Not seen on the previous edition were side rotaries, which are included here. They are mounted in the upper side grip holes, next to another addition – customisable illuminated indicators.

“When we started in late 2020 with the first the first Formula Pro Elite, it was a great wheel and is still a great wheel, but this [V2] takes all the feedback that we received in those first three years and applies it,” said Jose Sebastian Gomez, Founder and Executive Creative Director at GSI, to RaceDepartment.

However, despite the extras, it is lighter thanks to subtle changes in form factor. The difference is most notable at the rear, with indented sections, a look that is also present on the five updated push-button rotary encoder design.

The top of the model is remarkably thinner compared to the original, and the grip design has been slightly rounded out. The gearshift and clutch paddles are fresh, with cavities, further imbuing a sense of svelteness.

The 300mm diameter V2’s base weight is ‘around’ 1.42kg, which GSI claims is a ~27 per cent saving over the predecessor, despite the additional items.

The FPE V2 – designed for use on higher-powered PC wheel bases by the likes of Simucube and Fanatec – is set for release in March 2024 for a starting price of $1250. It will be part of GSI’s extensive optional customisation programme.

Lovely looking wheel, do people who use wheels with built in displays actually use the on wheel display that much while driving?
I think that has a lot to do with their driving position. In a GT-style setup, the wheel is usually not as much in your face (although it can be if you want it to be, I guess). For Formula-style rigs, it's a different story just from the way you're sitting.

Personally, I do much better with a fixed dash display on the wheelbase rather than a display on the wheel itself, but I do see the appeal. These things look really good!

Yep, I'm set up in more of a GT Style so an on wheel display isn't really in the optimum line of sight for me. If I went down this route it would be purely because it looks cool :)

That is a nice looking wheel. I almost pulled the trigger on a Cube Controls CSX 3. Because I thought the LCD display on the wheel looked "pro". Then when I realized all of the other stuff I would have to buy because I have a Fanatec DD2 wheel base, I went, "Nah".

I opted for a DDU that has a 6 inch display and now I am "pro". :)

For some sims I don't use on-screen apps anymore. All info is on the display in my wheel. It's quite immersive to drive this way.
Yep I like to keep stuff off the screen. I use an old iPad and phone off to one side of my wheel base but as its static they are easier to view for me. Having recently started to dabble in VR although I still want one with a display I’m not convinced how much I’d use it this is very nice though

Much better than what Fanatec has to offer and hell yeah, I’m buying this candy…

I don't and I find it a little distracting. I have the Simagic FX Pro and it's beautifully, but I mainly use the display to make quick FFB adjustments while driving.

Will it run on Fantec's ClubSport Base V2.5, or it will only be for DD?

Looks less chungus than the original which is a good thing, lovely looking wheel.

It looks motorsport derived unlike some other rims I've seen lately which look like Hasbro designed them.

Having asked about this before to Gomez. You’d need to buy the Fanatec Podium Hub And then use the wheel via the USB cable.

I’ve looked at their wheels a few times and having watched their company grow from a small operation in a spare room (and seeing the wheels being carefully and lovingly built on Twitch) to a much larger operation I’m very pleased that they have built a successful company in such a tough financial climate.

I always wanted one of their wheels but as I like endurance I’d always fancied a wheel with led buttons (like the real prototype cars) and the pro wheel was slightly out of my reach.

However this is a good price for a wheel with all those features, yes I know it will probably be maybe a hundred or so euros more for the extra paddles but still it’s still considerably cheaper that most other makes.

I think the Ascher McLaren "display" wheels are going to be over 2k (as the wheel without the display is more than this one) so will start saving for this mk2 wheel I think.

The only downside is how "real" do you want your racing, by that I mean there are replica F1, 911 type wheels which are exactly like those in the featured cars but they got much much more.

I will stay with F1 V2 then. It’s just fine.

Fair enough my friend.

I guess the one main advantage this new version has is overall weight.

Gomez did make the remark once that the V1 of this wheel is very well built. Thick aluminum casing, strong build quality etc. The downside to that was although you could use it on the Clubsport bases easily enough it may not generate enough torque to overcome the weight of the wheel very well.

So considering how much thinner and lighter this new wheel is it would be much better for the likes of us with the Clubsport bases that don’t generate tonnes of direct drive force.

So that makes me more keen for this wheel for sure.

Do you prefer licensed hardware?

  • Yes for me it is vital

  • Yes, but only if it's a manufacturer I like

  • Yes, but only if the price is right

  • No, a generic wheel is fine

  • No, I would be ok with a replica
