PISTA Motorsport: New Dev Log Highlights More Content & Rain

Progress is being made at REG Simulations: The Argentine developers continue to make strides with PISTA Motorsport, having just released a second beta version to their limited number of testers. This also means that it was time for their third dev log on the sim that aims to celebrate the racing scene in Argentina, highlighting new content and the implementation of wet weather racing.

While the car had been shown in one of the very first PISTA screenshots already, the Formula 3 Metropolitana has found its way into the current beta version of the sim now. This popular open-wheeler weighs in at just 565 kg(1245 lbs) and sports a 140+ hp engine. REG Simulations state that the car is progressing nicely and in line with what the data from manufacturer Crespi and the real series would suggest.

Welcome to La Plata!

Additionally, one of Argentina's most-frequented racing circuits in Autodromo de La Plata is now also up and running in its 2023 guise following updates to the tarmac, curbs and surroundings carried out earlier this year. La Plata can be run in its long and short layouts, as well as the long version including the chicane towards the end of the main straight.

Watch the Puddles

As stated previously, the small Argentine studio is also hard at work to properly implement their rain physics. The latest dev update explains how the tire physics are going to work on a wet track, factoring in a coefficient for water dissipation of each tire and the amount of water on the track - meaning puddles may make your racing life more difficult should you hit them, as aquaplaning is going to be a strong possibility.

In conjunction with this, a dry line is starting to take shape as well. Cars dissipate water where they drive, and once the rain stops, a dry line will form accordingly, which is also going to be reflected in PISTA Motorsport.

The beta version of PISTA Motorsport is not yet publically available, but the upcoming sim may be open to more sim racers by the end of the year, as REG Leader Juan Cruz Gaglio stated in July to answer one of our 12 questions about PISTA Motorsport - be sure to take a look at this article to find out more about the title's future. You can also find the full dev log in Spanish on the REG Simulations website.

I'm readying some pesos for if and when a proper game with believable physics is up and running.

It looks promising. There's something lacking explanation though, when it is stated that the team has implemented 95% of the beta testers suggestions ; it would ve interesting to know what were their quantity and nature, as it seems a lot (I usually think community driven developpement isn't the best way to keep the developper's vision).

What is interesting is that the new car is made to be the exact replica of the real one, with identical lap times and telemetry data. Is it a realism guarantee? Not sure, as tyres wezr and temp are not simulated and as, I assume, such sork must have been done in the past with various results (ACC?). Anyway, this is a good base to start with and it is promising.

There is some really interesting progress there, although it is a bit strange making a bit of everything at the same time. Well, not that strange as other sims have been doing the same thing for years, going through iterative updates, each one breaking an old feature which requires an update which will break something else...

REG published a video :

Although it is a beta, in fact an alpha (I really hope REG did not shoot itself in its foot by misnaming this version a beta), I like the desaturated colors, which imo is a simple but more realsitic approach to graphics (in sims).

A review video, with the orginal Argentinian accent!!! "CHa me encanta lo que estoy viendo." The shouting isn't from Argentina though, this is just this guy not able to speak normally (a common disease, or virus, on the tube) ; turn down the volume and protect your ears. The gameplay is at 12min12 :

Basically he is stating it is a beta version with numerous issues (an alpha version...), which had to be expected, and the driving is original and feels like no other sim. He doesn't know whether these unique physics are more realistic or no, and they are closer to rfactor2 or iracing than to AC (the famous AC details some don't like in comparison to rfactor2 ; not trying to launch a debate there, that's just a question of taste).

For those who were worried about the controller support (at this time of the development?), you can already see the multiple control support (he is using 3 distinct pieces of hardware).

The UI is clear and clean. At least, this small team has something interesting and concrete to show, and that's already much more than most of the big names... and their Unity graphics look quiet similar to those of Rennsport (bad), but with an obvious room for improvement, where Rennsport is already struggling with the native Unreal Engine technologies (LODs).

Wait and see the second phase...

EDIT : by the way MEP Motorsport channel isn't bad at all, on the contrary, there are lots of interesting content. It shows many modded cars and tracks never seen before. One of the "positive" simracing channels. It just doesn't need that shouting tone.

So they are already ahead on iRacing when it comes to the rain......well done!

I kept expecting him to start shouting "GOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!!!!" :D

It looks like rF1...in 2023...and the sounds...

I'll dare to disagree, the graphics are nowhere close to Rennsport, on the contrary, they're even atrocious at some details like the trees. Sound is also bad for the moment.

Of course it's an alpha yet and I wish the best luck for developers.

Indeed, Rennsport looks better, especially on Spa. I was remembering the first videos with these awful washed out and blurry visuals and the awful clipping. These are still issues but less pronounced (in Spa at least). The lightning is even good on close parts of the setting (shadows are badly rendered at average and long distances which make the setting look washed out). The clipping is still awful and unacceptable.

Here, in this alpha version, obviously there are many placeholders, clipping, and washed out tones. Both games suffer from the blueish syndrome.

Yes, Rennsport graphics are superior, my wording "similar" wasn't appropriate ; better to say Pista MS graphics reminded me of Rennsport graphics style and, especially the problems.

Rennsport graphics are obviously more advanced and detailed, but my point is about comparing a real beta version, with issues that should not exist in an UE5 game, and an alpha version of a game rendered in a less advanced graphic engine with placeholders. The clipping and the LODs in Rennsport just show a big problem with its graphical department as these issues should natively not exist in this engine. Pista MS graphics being in the current state is not suprising, I'm sure there is room for improvement (and I think it is a good idea to work on all the big features before getting deeper into the graphics), but Rennsport graphics, at this stage of its development, are a real problem which won't be solved easily. It looks like an old way of rendering a game has been implemented in an advanced graphical engine ; there is something really wrong there (and I'm not bothered by the blurry graphics at a distance, it is somewhat realistic imo, like in ACC ; IRL our view is less accurate at a distance, I'm ok with that being reproduced in games).

Frankly, an Alpha or even a Beta build means nothing to me. I'll just wait and see when the sim is close to release. I hope it's good, because this is one title that will include something else than Spa, Monza or a Porsche GT3.
