Watch: 5 Things You Might Have Missed in the TDU Solar Crown Reveal

The veils surrounding Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown were somewhat lifted at last in the TDU Connect live stream event last week: A first look at actual gameplay of the game set on Hong Kong Island sparked discussion about the upcoming title - but the sometimes hectic nature of the stream means you may have missed a few interesting elements. OverTake's Marvin Miller highlights five of them.

An enormous map to play with, exclusive cars and a gang rivalry between the Streets and the Sharps - the Hong Kong Island setting looks rather promising for the newest instalment in the Test Drive Unlimited series. While a release date (supposedly in early 2024, and then there is the developers' strike at Kylotonn) is still up in the air after being pushed back, the live gameplay that was shown allowed some conclusions to be drawn, although it had to be kept in mind that it is an early version of the game.

Judging driving physics just by looking at gameplay footage is tough, but there are hints at what they are going to be like - and they might not be purely arcade-based, as Marvin argues. Whether or not damage is going to be simply cosmetical or actually going to affect how the cars handle remains to be seen, though.

Get Ready to Explore

An interesting feature from TDU 2 looks set for a return in the meantime: Players who love to explore should be pleased to see it back on board for TDU Solar Crown, which likely goes hand in hand with how street racing works this time around.

We are not going to spoil what Marvin's observations are - you can see for yourself in the video. There are positives and negatives to be found, and it will be interesting to see how TDU Solar Crown evolves once the Beta program launches. It is going to be private at first, starting on July 24th.

The video thumbnail is suboptimal. I mean you have the clickbaity question and the red arrow pointing at random sh*t, but you also need a guy making a stupid face in the bottom left corner!

After reading the description of Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Reveal on Steam, I wondered why I would be interested in this at all. Is this a game for kids? What does this have to do with sim racing? Oh yes, now I remember. Test Drive was my first racing experience on a DOS computer. I had secretly hoped for a modern version of this. But no, I'm going to walk around this with a big bow.

Agreed.
The direction you guys are taking for your videos, following what seems to give fake internet points over youtube, isn't what we (i think i can talk for most of us) are looking for coming in Racedepartment.

I assure you there's quality videos out there, which don't need those stupid smiley face and red arrows all over the thumbnails.
I mean, look at Chris Haye ;)

Yeah, it's all getting a bit 'reaction video' with the thumbnails and silly facial expressions. 'Zoomer sim racer reacts to Grand Prix Legends!!' (insert thumbnail of person doing Edvard Munch type screaming thing)

:cry::cry::sick:
All my hopes are gone in 3 seconds of gameplay. Tested in third person, physics worse than mario kart. Another arcade game among others... just for $$$.
TDU1 will stay far ahead of this nextgen game for kids.

TDU1 restera loin devant ce jeu nextgen pour enfants.:cry::cry:

KT Engine itself is a joke... have we forgotten how bad the graphics of WRC10 is?
Even TDU2 looks better than this, c'mon.

Well, reading the comments there, which litterally state the exact contrary than overtake's video, we obviously can foresee a hard way for KT and its gzme, whatever it's qualities will be.

Sticking to the information delivered in this video, and.not any other piece of psycjological fantasy, the physics being more realistic than any other game of the genre is an amazing piece of news imo, as it is exactly what I,'ve been expecting from KT.

The presentation was bad, rushed (probably the strike effect, the aim being to lower the doubts such an event may raise), and didn't sell the game as any alpha version wouldn't be able to do. The most important, apart the reminder that German women are absolutely underrated (poor "vivian hughes", I felt much worse for her than for any of the Street Racing Syndicate models :D : I didn't feel bad at all for the SRS models, these girls were trying to get some attention as models, stupid girls for a stupid game concept, on purpose - the same who are on instagram and tiktok nowadays - it worked for tila tequila, if I remember her name well), is what differenciate the product from the competition and I was expecting KT on the physics aspect. Let's face it, TDU's concept was good on its time, it can be reproduced (must be for the fans) but the racing is a core mechanic and there are strong competitors already on the place which more and more look alike : do we need.another one? No, and the most obvious aspect an open world game can make absolutely different and new is the physics area. It's great KT has taken that path. As I already stated, the believable driving, although not fully sim, of V Rally 4 was a tremendous surprise imo and similar physics in this TDU game would be a refreshing and new step in the genre. The orher thing I hope.will be implemented in TDUSC is the track generator, which was cleverly done in V Rally 4.

So good news there, if they are confirmed. I would be more confident in sim racers opinions than in those of the usual open world racing game "youtubers specialists".

can`t be any worse than `the crew wokefest` that I tried the beta of, whats with all this social avatar shite. all it needed to be was TDU1 concept with decent physics and upto date graphics.
