iRacing Project ExoCross To Release This Autumn

After three years in early access, iRacing is launching a rebranded DRAG Outer Zones this Autumn called ExoCross.

DRAG Outer Zones is a futuristic off-road racing game that has been in early access on Steam since 2020. Featuring a unique physic model called 4-way contact patch traction technology, it certainly has promise. iRacing saw that promise in 2021 when it bought out the studio developing the title, Orontes Games.

Today, the title is undergoing a rebranding and preparing for release in Autumn of 2023 under a new name, ExoCross. Here's all you need to know about the title coming to PC and consoles this year.

What is ExoCross?

ExoCross is a new title emerging from the DRAG Outer Zones early access program on Steam. Its unique physics model simulates in great detail the contact a car has with the road using soft-body mechanics. This ties in with the title's niche futuristic off-road art style to make for a seemingly unrivalled experience.

In its current early access form, players can enjoy time trial modes both in the form of single player special events and multiplayer leader board sessions. But upon full release, it will feature full AI functionality enabling players to compete in quick races and full championships. If the team that created iRacing's AI contributed to this title's, it should make for a brilliant racing experience.

Compared to its DRAG Outer Zones version, ExoCross will also implement new vehicle classes and locations making for greater variety. These are all off-road vehicles built in a futuristic style. Scenery and locations seemingly range from Hot Wheels-inspired sky-high circuits to vast country-side mountain passes.

An Autumn release

It is announced that ExoCross will release in Autumn of 2023. Whether that means early-September or late-November is as yet unknown. What we do know is that the game will release on Steam, replacing the DRAG Outer Zones early access. Those that purchased the early access will get a free upgrade to the full title. But it will also launch on consoles at the same time. As one would expect, the list includes PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Series X.

Following on from iRacing's previous standalone release, World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing, we are excited about this new game. The early access provides a good base whilst iRacing's involvement later on in development can only improve the title.

What do you make of ExoCross?

The iRacing standalone titles seem so random, it's something I'd expect from Motorsport Games. Well, I expect iRacing actually get their games on the market.

Nothing to do with the main product, of course, but a curious move. Couldn't they maybe do something with classic racing, historic tracks? iRacing has a few good historic cars so why not put a few tracks together and call it Grand Prix Legends something or other...

Because that would conflict with the main game…

You wouldn’t want to give your customers something that could take them away from your main source of $$

At least iRacing are good to create video teasers.:roflmao:
But quite honestly it looks amazing.
And if I was some of the more gamish car developers I would begin to fear for my future existence.
iRacing has been the monolit for 24/7 online service for some years - and now they are expanding into new areas.

Why cant you just also create a good road sim tire model iRacing?

I don't really care who is backing the game, it looks like it could be a very fun controller/casual game. They look like giant RC cars - when I first saw the images I thought it was just that, which sounds like a fun and novel idea as well.
I was actually confused and after watching the video I still wasn't sure if I was seeing a miniature rc and miniature world or if the vehicle and world were life-size

My first thought is, they are not going to release a historic racing game because they are out to do money. Second thought, and here's the selling point: you get the iRacing driving experience without having to pay a monthly subscription. The "catch" is that you get that but it's old tracks and old cars. This also makes it different enough, as a product, from iRacing proper unless they start adding historic tracks, which I don't see them doing.

oh, what a good move, instead of buying a new 3D engine...Maybe they can sell well and make a lot of profit, but not with my money.
How do you know the purchase wasn't for a new 3d engine? It looks pretty good on the graphics side to me.

plyaed the demo of the original game and it felt real fun but you only got a very restricted glimpse of the overall game, so it might be misleading. I bet some of the code will find its way into the iRacing code one of these days if that is feasible from a coding pov.

The meaning of the words "emerge" and "rebrand" are a bit unclear; will all of those who paid for Drag Early Access also have to buy ExoCross?

ExoCross will be an automatic upgrade and replacement for DRAG: Outer Zones for PC Early Access users.

Am I wrong interpreting the text as this game will only be single player?
I admit I havent checked if Drag has a MP part.:whistling:

I found it to be a bit limited, quite difficult, but decent physics and graphics.

Nice to know I'll get a full game out of my purchase! It feels like Formula Fusion becoming Pacer.

If anyone else thinks iRacing team are limited to one game, back in 1994 the pre-iRacing Papyrus team actually helped port the 3DO game Road Rash to PC!
