With the recently announced release date of TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3 getting closer, a select few were able to visit the Raceward Studios office in Milan for a preview. Whilst new game footage is interesting, as is the latest teaser trailer released by Nacon over the weekend, the most exciting information of the week has to be shots of the open world map.
With the third iteration of the Ride on the Edge franchise very much a case of revolution rather than evolution, this "Open Roads" mode is set to be a centre point in the game. This will certainly change from the second game in the series in which the exploration mode seemed to be an after thought.
This is the same vibe gamers will experience in Ride on the Edge 3. In previous games, the free roam mode was oddly set in Ireland, but that will all change. The "Open Roads" mode in which players have free reign over countless Manx roads allows them to explore the island and discover new events, challenges and locations.
Yes, this game's free roam mode puts you on the Isle of Man with the entire TT course and many of its service roads to explore. Have you ever fancied going straight on at Ballacraine instead of sweeping right? You can do that and continue on to the fishing town of Peel. Ever wondered what it's like going round the mountain and following the coast? Ride on the Edge 3 allows you to try. Even the streets of Ramsey, at the North of the course, and Douglas, by the start line, are opened up for racing fans to explore.
Unlike previous titles, the map won't be an empty expanse to ride around. In Ride on the Edge 3, the "Open Roads" mode is where players will activate various events. It's also here that they can learn the TT course before attending the qualifying events required to enter the TT. Challenges and quick races will also be available to enter from the free roam map.
Think of this latest game then as an adaptation of the Forza Horizon recipe. Except it's with bikes. And it takes place on a rock in the middle of a very un-tropical sea. And it is certainly catered to fans of a specific niche in the motorsport world. That being said, you most definitely don't need to be a fan of the TT to get excited by this game. It may focus on the infamous Manx event, but fans of racing in general are sure to gravitate towards this upcoming title.
What do you make of this more central approach to the TT game's open world mode?

A holiday on the Isle of Man
In the real world, attending the Isle of Man TT typically means one spends a solid two weeks stuck on the island in the middle of the Irish Sea. Getting off the isle requires either a long boat journey or an expensive plane ticket, so racing fans traditionally set up camp and spend a fortnight exploring the surrounding area. This is the same vibe gamers will experience in Ride on the Edge 3. In previous games, the free roam mode was oddly set in Ireland, but that will all change.
