EA Teases Need For Speed Unbound Art Style and Reveal Event

The next instalment of the Need For Speed franchise has taken the spotlight in the racing games scene today with an announcement, giving the fans a date and time to write down in their agendas.

What we expect to be a trailer will be dropped as a youtube premiere this Thursday, October 6 at 5PM CEST (8AM PDT).


There are already some infos to gather from the short video and a picture - potentially the game's cover - which appeared briefly on EA's website in the racing game's list section before being removed.

Rumours insisted heavily towards the game featuring "anime" style elements, prompting a lot of people to expect an Auto Modellista like artistic direction with cellshading. But at the same time, the word "photorealistic" was also used by sources close to the game, prompting confusion within the fanbase.

The global artistic direction seems to be heavily focused on street art culture, with graffiti being omnipresent in the material we got today. The car featured on the cover art - a new entry in the NFS series, the Mercedes 190E AMG Evo II - doesn't appear to be modelled drastically differently than what the 3 previous games gave us if you ignore the shaders effects, and it looks like the Chicago environments will retain a realistic appearance as well.

The cartoonish elements, which will be layered on top of everything else, appear to have a more western flavour than what the word "anime" would lead many to expect. The street art cues, the colours and overall style are actually very reminiscent of Jet Set Radio, a roller skating game originally released by Sega in 2000, which featured electro and hip-hop music, and used graffiti extensively as part of its gameplay.

To complete the focus on street culture and strong visual identity, word has that the characters would be getting the cartoon / comic treatment as well. If that proves to be true, expect colourful and unique character designs.

Although we still don't have much in terms of visuals for now, NFS Unbound already strikes with bold choices, and promises to look like nothing else in the racing game genre. And since Criterion is in charge of the development of this game, we can assume some more fast paced elements, with Burnout inspired mechanics, combined with this new visual personality has good chances of leading to high energy vibes. If your curiosity has been triggered, rendezvous in two days for the official reveal.

As someone who has played the first three NFS games that were released 1994 - 1998 (btw imagine that, three games within four years, that's unheard of in todays development climate) i just find it super weird what has become of this series. Starting with the first Underground the series just lost me and since then i still check in on the new games to see if there is some kind of return to the roots of the first three games. But nope.

Seriously…it would be so easy for EA to have a successfull NFS title again: just bring NFS Underground with modern graphics, modern cars (but also keep the old ones) and a lot to tune and I'm sure this would sell a lot of copies.

What you're asking for is NFS 2015 / Heat basically. Unless you just want a straight out remaster, but if the last NFS remasters are any indication, it wouldn't come with the old school physics.

Heat is also topping the charts just right now. It's been helped by sales, but it's really doing well commercially.

Whoa, totally forgot about that gem. I really enjoyed that title back in the days.

You said it. I still play NFS2SE and it offers me so much more joy than the same stupid open-world city filled with cars with tube lights under them, and constant drift and nitro push nonsense. Guess we're never getting plain old supercars on exotic unique fixed circuits again.
 
Uh, does NAMCO have a case here? What about Ridge Racer Unbound? What's next, Need for Speed: Paradise? Burnout: Wreckfest? Need for Speed Porsche Ignition Unlimited but Bound?
 
Looking at this art design does not promise to be honest. I'm waiting for when they come up with the idea of combining the maps from U, U2 and MW into one big and all on UE5, NFS Reboot. :D

Personally dont understand why theyre still sticking with the Frostbite game engine. It was originally designed for Battlefield and does them games very well but when it comes to racing games its a massive flop. They should just bite the bullet and either use the Ego engine from codemasters which for the type of game it is would be perfectly suitable or the Unreal Engine.

Best arcade racer ever alongside with Wipeout HD/Fury, Mario Kart 8, Sonic Transformed, F-Zero GX and Road Rash 2.

Counting the days until we had a fully working PS3 or X360 emulator to play MCLA at a decent resolution and framerate.

Indeed, 2015 felt so much like a decent NFSU3, with Police additionally but not focussed. Was really good, still good to play.
Heat ... well, it was free this weekend via Steam, so I played it, finished it and don't even want to buy it for 3,50 €. I needed 8 mods to make the game a bit fun and not frust (at least the night stuff).
 
Honestly, this actually looks like it could be pretty good if the whole cel shaded thing is executed with confidence and if the game doesn't get EA'd too much, I'm keeping an eye on this (then again I may be a little too hopeful given NFS fans havent exactly had a properly great game since about 2010)

thats actually why i liked Driveclub. very underrated game and after some content patches it was a true jewel.
i'd say its the best point A to point B (non open world) arcade racer ever made. might be a stretch, but yeah
