BeamNG Updated to Version 0.26

BeamNG September 2022 Update 01.jpg
BeamNG has been updated to version 0.26, bringing significant updates to the Ibishu Covet plus map updates and new missions.

The Early Access phase of BeamNG continues, with the driving simulator now moving to version 0.26. While this update isn't massive, it does bring improvements to multiple aspects of the title.

Popular among BeamNG players, the fictional Ibishu Covet has received a revamped 3D model, reworked textures, design improvements and structural tweaks. Multiple versions of the car are included, and the Covet now features openable doors, hood and trunk, a functional odometer, and an animated manual shifter and many other changes.

Players can now also optionally enjoy motion blur, which should result in a better sense of speed.

BeamNG has earned a following thanks largely to its soft-body physics model, which has resulted in countless popular videos on YouTube featuring spectacular crashes and mangled vehicles.

Let us know in the comments below if your favourite things to do in BeamNG, and whether you're enjoying the improved Covet.

The car manufacturers and sponsors won't allow it? or it is resource hungry?
Both. Soft body physics took YEARS before they got good in BeamNG, let me remind you, and it used to pretty much destroy your computer until they optimized it. BeamNG is fantastic, but just because they made a game around the concept and the concept is cool doesn't mean that its easy to replicate the concept.

I wish I could play this in VR, though I completely understand why that's not coming in the foreseeable future if ever.

Love this game, just my current setup has no good way to play from a monitor or triples, only VR.

Pretty sure iRacing moved over to soft-body physics, at least with regards to certain parts of the car being damaged.

I think BeamNG has some of the most natural control of cars during slip around. As good as "hardcore racing sims" tend to be, they're all still full, in their own ways, of times where the vehical behaviour along with the control of the vehicle's behaviour gives you an "OMG, what a joke" moment.

OFF TOPIC: Anyone here uses Automation to build car for BNG? If does, what do you think about the incoming update?

The biggest advantage to BNG is the small damages, like going too fast over the kerbs, weak impacts and things like that. Some sims do a relatively good job with some of that stuff, but physics as BNG could elevate it to a whole new level.

Of course, accidents like these in this screenshots would be more than welcome.

Yeah, I recently bought VorpX to see if it's usable with BeamNG, Wreckfest and Dirt3/4. I can say, it's usable in VR, but you more or less get just a cinema screen in front of you with a hint of 3D sadly. Wreckfest looks best on my setup, and for that alone VorpX was almost worth its price.

Yeah, I looked into VorpX & Wreckfest in VR, but no solution looked satisfactory for me.

Would be nice if there would be a few more solutions like this coming:

Unfortunately, neither are on UE, or any mainstream engine.

IMO, fake cars , weird track physics but very realistic car physics. I always thought Beam was just a hodgepog put together to show off their crash physics model in hope other developers would buy it to add to their own game; so i think it is a commercial (advertisement) that you have to pay for! I bought it and then returned it as it was too janky for me.

I see a very common misunderstanding: that's not "soft body crashes", the whole engine is a sandbox physics simulator that can simulate cars realistically as a byproduct (but also simulates trains, boats and planes on the same physics engine, you can potentially make anything mechanical with it).
Even the tire model is soft body, any sim willing to go that route would need to use their thech for the whole game or make a new extremely complex engine from scratch (a lot more complex than any other sim i think, if it has to run in real time).

I do!

It is one of the best things inthe history of sim titles IMHO, Both devs teams are truly passionate about cars and obsessed with realism for every minor thing.

I didn't read about any new feature in automation exporter, they did a big update for the exporter of automation beta some time ago, so that you can now change many things in the BNG parts manager, and a nice update to aero export, but IDK about anything else.

Try it now, it improved massively during last year and they're introducing lots of gameplay content (new kinds of scenarios, races, timetrials).
You also have a very healty modding scene, and a rally mod that introduces pacenotes for many time trials.

I don't know how much better the soft body physics need to be that they were in Burnout, but at least you had a "game" there; a reason to keep coming back aside from the morbid fascination with crushing things. BeamNG is a carnage-fetish simulator!

I'm pretty sure none of the Burnouts nor Flatout (including Wreckfest) games use soft-body physics but, ya, they have awesome damage :D

Personally, I loved Flatout 1 (and also 2 if I remember correctly). After that, they sucked (until Wreckfest). I never liked any of the Burnout games, unlike Flatout 1 (and 2 I think), I never enjoyed Burnout's physics but, ya, good damage.

I think BeamNG is a "carnage-fetish simulator" because it has very deep physics. I've been saying this for years: physics make a game, not graphics, content, etc. If you have a game with complex, dynamic physics, where gameplay, results, etc. will be different every time due to the depth of the physics, then those games will have more replay value because, like real life, things will always be different. If BeamNG had the physics modelling of any of our racing sims, there wouldn't be all these damage videos being made because the physics, crashes, damage, etc. would all be so simplistic and boring. Because BeamNG's physics are anything but simplistic and boring, people want to play the game to play "God", to see what would happen in all sorts of scenarios that they can't replicate in real life (without killing yourself). Imagine what Grand Theft Auto 10 or 20 will be like. It will be like almost controlling a real person with a real world due to how much depth will be in the game's physics, AI, etc. People will be doing the same thing, "playing God", with that game too.

When a game has deep enough physics, doing the simplest things (like crashing a car into a wall) becomes extremely interesting because the results are extremely complex and dynamic.

There is a Career Mode coming for BeamNG Drive.

This is the devlog recently released:

I love BNG for exploring, jump in my hopper and go driving all over the maps looking for secret caves etc.

Do you prefer licensed hardware?

  • Yes for me it is vital

  • Yes, but only if it's a manufacturer I like

  • Yes, but only if the price is right

  • No, a generic wheel is fine

  • No, I would be ok with a replica
