Gran Turismo 7 | Physics Changes and New Track Layouts in v1.20

The latest update of Gran Turismo 7, numbered 1.20, just released. Without any surprise following Kazunori's teaser last week, the new cars are as predicted the following:
  • McLaren MP4/4 '88
  • Pontiac GTO 'The Judge' '69
  • Porsche Cayman GT4 '16
The two older cars will appear in Hagerty's legendary cars dealership at the next daily refresh, with the formula 1 car being expected to cost a hefty 8 million in-game credits.

The Dior version of the DeTomaso Mangusta is already available in the same dealership for 500.000 Cr, which is more expensive than the regular version for the same specs, aside the livery (which you can change), a different interior color, and the fact that using it will force the Dior racing gear on your character.

Still on the content side of things, the circuit of Barcelona - Catalunya gets additional layouts : a version without the final chicane, the shorter national version (which takes a hairpin before T1), and more interestingly the rallycross track. Turn 10 remains the old version though, the recently updated corner not having been scanned or modeled so far.

This looks like this wasn't the original plan regarding track additions for this update, as spotted earlier when the details of one of the upcoming online esport races changed, so the devs resorted to this backup plan instead.

New engine swaps have also been discovered by the community already:
  • R26B (4 rotor) into Mazda RX8
  • Audi Quattro Pikes Peak inline 5 engine into VW Golf MK1
  • LT4 from Camaro ZL1 into TVR Tuscan
  • VK45DE V8 engine from GT500 GT-R into Nissan 370Z
  • Hellcat engine from Dodge Charger into Plymouth Superbird
But the big changes of this update are seen on the physics side. To quote the official patch notes:
  • Adjusted the suspension geometry;
  • Adjusted the simulation for tyre heat generation and wear ratio. This adjustment makes it easier to see the remaining tread;
  • Altered the simulation of the differential gear (with a Fully Customisable LSD). As a result, it's now more effective when decelerating and provides a much smoother driving performance;
Quick test drives show that this shifts the balance between front engined and mid engined race cars. Overall, cars seem to gain a bit on corner entry, while losing a bit in sustained lateral mechanical grip, and being more senstitive to throttle inputs regarding race cars (road cars don't feel different regarding traction). Front engined cars seem to have lost more stability than mid engined cars, which were handicaped by previous physics, as evidenced by Manufacturers Series results so far. FR cars lap times so far are slower than before. Drifting and grip loss feels more progressive, propably related to the new heat model.

The tyre heating model feels vastly improved, especially when analyzed through a 3rd party app: after being put under load and stress, the tyres retain heat for a longer period of time, and stabilizes to sligthly higher temperatures (starting from cold tyres). Before this update, the tyres would pretty much cool down instantly in a very spectacular fashion as they stopped being stressed.

The tyre wear model has also been changed. Aside the scale of the visual indicator, the way tyre grip drops off towards the end of the tyre's life has changed drastically: it's a lot less progressive, with only a few laps of warning with a small drop in pace before the tyre completely shuts off and becomes undriveable, as if it went flat. The way mechanical damages trigger also seem to have been tweaked according to the setting selected.

Aside all that, the update brings in a couple new Cafe Menus have been added to the solo campaign, and a bunch of small fixes. No mention of lobby stability updates have been made, although recent discoveries reported by IGTL to Polyphony Digital might have delayed scheduled deployment of patches. Full patch notes can be found in the spoiler below.

A new update for Gran Turismo 7 has been released. The following is a list of the adjustments introduced.

Main Features Implemented​

1. Cars
 - The following three new cars have been added:
  ・McLaren MP4/4 '88 (Purchasable at 'Legend Cars' from 26 August);
  ・Pontiac GTO 'The Judge' '69 (Purchasable at 'Legend Cars' from 26 August);
  ・Porsche Cayman GT4 '16

2. Dior Collaboration
 - The ‘De Tomaso Mangusta (Christian Dior)’ has been added, developed in collaboration with Dior. The 'De Tomaso Mangusta (Christian Dior)' will be purchasable in the 'Legend Cars' pavilion from 25 August. Also, when driving this car the racing suit and helmet are automatically changed to the exclusive collaboration gear versions;
 - A new special conversation regarding the De Tomaso Mangusta (Christian Dior) has been added to a Character appearing at the Café. This new conversation can be experienced by changing into this car from the 'Garage' and speaking with the Character located at the Café.

3. Tracks
 - Three new layouts have been added to the ‘Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya':
  ・Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya GP Layout No Chicane
  ・Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya National Layout
  ・Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Rallycross Layout

The maximum number of cars that can be on track at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Rallycross Layout is 16.

4. Café
 - The following two Extra Menus have been added:
  ・Extra Menu No. 6: ‘Collection: Abarth’ (Collector Level 27 and above);
  ・Extra Menu No. 7 ‘Collection: Gr.2 Racing Cars’ (Collector Level 38 and above);

The new Menu Books and Extra Menus will appear after clearing Menu Book No. 39 ('Championship: World GT Series') and having watched the ending.

5. World Circuits
 - The following new events have been added to 'World Circuits':
  ・Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
   - European Sunday Cup 500
   - Porsche Cup
   - World Touring Cars 600
   - World Rally Challenge

The 'European Sunday Cup 500' and 'Porsche Cup' will become available upon unlocking the 'Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya,' while the 'World Touring Cars 600' and 'World Rally Challenge' will appear after clearing Menu Book No. 39 ('Championship: World GT Series') and having watched the ending.

6. Scapes
 - The ‘Canadian Rockies’ location has been added as a featured Curation in Scapes.

7. Brand Central
 - A ‘GT AWARDS’ logo is now displayed on cars that won the GRAN TURISMO AWARDS SEMA (GT Awards). The logo will be displayed on the Garage top screen as well as in Brand Central.

Other Improvements and Adjustments​

1. Physics Simulation Model
 - Adjusted the suspension geometry;
 - Adjusted the simulation for tyre heat generation and wear ratio. This adjustment makes it easier to see the remaining tread;
 - Altered the simulation of the differential gear (with a Fully Customisable LSD). As a result, it's now more effective when decelerating and provides a much smoother driving performance;
 - Adjusted the Performance Points (PP) of some cars;
 - Changed the conditions for mechanical damage occurring from a collision or contact if 'Mechanical Damage' is set to ‘Light’ or Heavy’ in the race settings.

2. Controllers
 - Adjusted the performance of the wireless controller.

3. Sound
 - Adjusted the sound effects so that it is easier to hear the difference in sound between Stage 1 to 3 of the ‘Weight Reduction' modification.

4. Legend Cars
 - Legend Cars (Hagerty Collection) prices have been revised based on real-life valuations from Gran Turismo partner, Hagerty.

Hagerty provides valuations and vehicle insurance for classic cars and has sponsored some historic car events in recent years.

New prices will be applied the next time a vehicle goes on sale. The next price revision is scheduled for November 2022.

5. Race Screen
 - Fixed an issue wherein the ‘Weather Radar’ on the ‘Multi-Function Display’ would not function properly in event races with weather and time set.

6. Others
 - Various other issues have been addressed.

I dont have the game or a playstation, but from what i understand instead of adding cars maybe the game should add a way to earn money faster?
 
the new cayman gt4 is out for like years, why do we get the old car?
oh wait, PD does not want to spend money on the license.
also they don't have even one 911 992 model, really not a good look.
it feels like most of the modern cars are last gen even though the current gen is out for like 4-5 years or more.

Gran Turismo has physics ?
Every game has physics. Even Myth Makers Super Kart GP.

Alternatively, no game has physics. It's all just a bunch of code designed to produce a deterministic outcome based on your inputs.

I said this on GTplanet and people said its not all about the cars. Its literally a car collector game what are they on about
 
I'm always a bit sad when I see news about Gran Turismo. It's like seeing a Facebook picture of an ex girlfriend. I used to be a big fan but they did so much to push me away!
Still admire GT for what they did in the past and completely understand why some are still in love and some have walked away. I thought this would be my excuse for buying a PS5 but it was not to be! I hope they improve it and their next installment will be back on track.
 
i played the sh** out of GT3 back then on the PS2, i was simply addicted to it, it was my roommates PS2 though, i never owned a Playstation.
i still wait for the day when a GT game will come to PC because i don't get the same enjoyment from Forza Motorsport tbh, there is something with Forza games that are lacking, i think it's the presentation and classyness. GT compared to Forza feels like comparing a classical music orchestra to a rockband. It's just kind of two different worlds, not one better than the other, just different.
even though GT Sport and GT7 don't feel the same as previous GT entries, there is still this certain itch for me that gets scratched when i can progress through a campaign and earn credits for cars, same with Forza Motorsport.
there is just no triple-A PC racing game that offers this.

Weather that moves in at a thousand MPH, tyres that wear out in three laps a full tank of fuel in the same time, and I still can't get my head around always starting 30 seconds down on the leader for a 3-5 lap race, that means you have to be 6-10 seconds a lap faster (including overtakes... 19) to win, that busts all competition ideas in half.
To be honest it's an overtaking game, there's no good racing to be had in single player mode, and I ain't paying a monthly sub to get whacked off the track by on-line lout.
The only relatively good race is a custom race where you can manipulate car stats in your garage and use those as opposition... there's no credits in that though.
...and where do I put the computer chips in my SU carburettors.

To be honets I feel that the £350 I spent on the PS4 and game were really a bit of a waste, but, I spent it, so I guess I can't blame anyone else.

definitely also don't blame yourself because you simply hoped for a proper gran turismo of old experience and its PD's fault for not being able to deliver it. GT Sport was ok for what it was, but here we all were hoping PD would 'return to form' with GT7. Visually they did, but not gameplay wise.
