When it comes to upgrading your sim racing equipment there are so many options, it can be daunting to decide where you should spend your money. Of course there are many people out there that don’t have to worry about where they spend their money.

For the rest of us, we want to make sure we get the best bang for our buck.

It doesn't matter who you speak to, they will most likely have a differing idea. Some sim racing friends might say that you need a direct drive wheel base, others may say a good set of pedals are more important than an upgraded wheelbase.

It can get even more nuanced than this, you might be advised to upgrade your PC but stick with Intel as they perform better on a single core, or you must buy a RTX GPU so you can utilize NVENC in OBS.

There are many ways to upgrade and everyone appears to have a differing opinion, so wouldn't it be great to take a middle of the range sim racing setup and see where the RD community would upgrade or replace.

Let us imagine for a moment that you own the following sim racing hardware and you are fortunate to have come into some money - £1500, $1960 etc.

And with permission from your nearest and dearest you are able to spend this amount upgrading your current setup.
  • 27” monitor, capable of 120 Hz but only displays a max resolution of 1920 x 1080.
  • ART Simulator Cockpit (XL RS variant), which is a steel frame and pre-drilled for Logitech, Thrustmaster, and Fanatec.
  • Your PC is 4 years old, with the following specifications (very generic specs FYI) - i7 8th gen, 16GB RAM, GTX 1080 GPU - middle of the road motherboard, 650w PSU
  • Thrustmaster TS-PC Racer Ferrari 488 Challenge Edition - no extra wheels
  • Thrustmaster T-LCM Pedals

For now, today, I'd buy "high end pedals". I improved alot when I got my CSL Elite load brake. So I think I would improuve again .... later may be a DD if the prices are ok (affordable).

Voted, Other. . a gaming rig...

Presumably before the next winter time on my local hemisphere:
  • Extra simrig adds as
    • classic analogue button boxes, preferable including elegant solution of metal on/off switch for ignition. I have a look on more solutions.
    • Loadcell addon for my G27 pedals of which have become my prime pedals in combo with my T300RS-GT wheel since my T-GT pedals were underwhelming when used for other simracing than GT racing, a Ricmotech break loadcell improved a bit but then it broke down.
    • Handbrake
    • DIY solution for T8HA+handbrake compact mount to my NLR F-GT Lite seat.
For next winter time
  • VR without PC-upgrade. After 14 day test ending this sunday I'm quite convinced I'll go for the Oculus Quest 2 which worked fine downscaled together with my RX580/5600X/32 Gb DDR4 3200Mhz. Do not aim for 100% VR at all (maybe 20% VR racing), just on occations now and then with AC, AMS2, PC2, GTR2 and rF1 (if available). Just for the fun of it.

Single screen is no-go for me, I'd start with VR or triple screens and then i guess sit back and evaluate whether the rig can handle a DD.

Thought you've stolen my old PC! :O_o::DSame MB, same RAM, and CPU until I re-read 6600K instead of mine 6600T (max TDP 35W).
In addition my very, very beloved Sapphire Radeon HD5770 Vapor-X of which could be overclocked both GPU core clock and VRAM clock over the moon without breakdown. Earned me very well for 8 full years. Incredible.
Last month I put it all together in a new case, as a secondary linux box, but got teased and installed a Win10 partition. Ofcourse older sims as GTR2, Race 07, GTL and rF1 with even heavy mods ran flawless, but even R3E and AMS2 I got away with! rF2 - not so much! :roflmao:

That's actually pretty similar to my gear. I'm torn between upgrading PC or getting a cockpit. The PC runs all the games I usually play, so I would probably go for the cockpit and forget about playing new games for a while.
