Project CARS 2 Could Be Worth Buying Now

Is Project CARS 2 Worth Buying 01.jpg
Project CARS 2 is on sale for 85% off as part of Steam's Winter Sale, and may be worth buying for some people who've held off until now.

Project CARS 2 will be remembered in the sim racing community as perhaps the most divisive title in the history of the genre. A huge car and track roster, an impressive weather system and excellent graphics and VR are held back by inconsistent car behaviour and AI, varying force feedback quality, and lackluster sounds. But the title isn't a complete write-off, and at 85% off during the Steam Winter Sale this might actually be a good time to add the title to your collection.

In spite of some common criticisms, Project CARS 2 does offer features that are generally well-liked. The car and track selection is extensive, and rare cars like the Aston Martin Vulcan and McLaren F1 are present along with interesting tracks like the Porsche test track and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. PC2 offers players a career mode that allows you to advance between various racing series, and even offers bonus modes like Rallycross and karting. Races and driving sessions can be set up for day or night (or a transition between the two either way) and in weather ranging from hot and sunny to thundershowers to snow. The VR implementation is another strength, as well as support for triple screens.

Some things PC2 has been criticized for include the frustrating AI racing, tinny sounds and inconsistent driving physics. The latter, compounded by force feedback that often lacks the same level of detail as its contemporaries, ruins the title completely for some users. Driving on certain car and track combinations can be a frustrating experience thanks to inconsistent behaviour between the cars. Group C and GT1 cars can be a blast to drive, whereas certain GT3 will require significant setup work to make the car drive in a similar fashion to any other sim on the market. Similarly, the force feedback can feel informative on some tracks with certain wheels, but other wheels and select tracks make even rough surfaces and curbs feel numb. AI racing difficulty will likely take a lot of tweaking to get right, and can vary greatly depending on the car class and track.

This isn't, of course, the most recent title in the series. Developer Slightly Mad Studios released Project CARS 3 in the summer of 2020. The title did improve in certain areas versus PC2, but the theme of the third game was notably different, and much of what makes Project CARS 2 fun was lost.

If you do decide to buy Project CARS 2, start with older content like the 1959 Aston Martin DBR1-300 or the Nissan R89C. If the force feedback isn't to your liking, there are FFB mod files that can be found in our Project CARS 2 downloads section. Rallycross racing can be a lot of fun as well, if you're looking for something a little different.

Project CARS 2 is a racing title with some well known flaws. If you can see past these flaws, however, there are lots of fun driving scenarios to explore. At 85% off on Steam, this might be a good time to finally add this to your collection.

Let us know your thoughts on Project CARS 2 in the comments below if you've tried it. Is it deserving of the criticism, or are some people unnecessarily shunning a fun racing title?

"It's better than PC3" isn't saying a lot IMO.
PC2 had great potential, but it has many flaws that prevent me from racing on it. Almost all of those were fixed by Reiza with AMS2, which IMO is what PC2 could've been if SMS had put the effort in it. AMS2 is the best sim on the Madness Engine.

So much potential, so many annoying bugs which just frustrate.

Its so much better than Project Cars 3, what a joke that was, should have never ever been released.
Well that's my opinion.
I own PC1 & PC2 since they were released and have had a buzz playing them.
PC3 was an absolute letdown. I played it maybe three times and ended up giving my copy away. I also own PC 1 &2 which were so much better.

Mike thank you for having the balls to talk about PCars 2. It is not fashionable for the RD crowd, even though the steam charts say other wise, PCars 2 still pulls double the daily players count of AMS2 and RF2.
Yes it should have had real support from SMS to fix all that is still wrong with it today, instead they just let it there to rot, but a lot of people still enjoy it for good reasons. The graphic prowess both in pancake and VR, is of course a good feature, but, with a carefully chosen FFB custom profile and curated content, PCars2 can deliver a very decent SIM experience.
Anyone not able to get that is doing it wrong.
On that subject, some content, with a DD wheel, in PCars 1 can also be surprisingly entertaining, Showing that back then, in the hands of a developers driven by passion instead of greed, the SMS engine had potential for greatness.
I'm quite surprised at the number of people who still like PC2. My first go round was disappointing but this time with the deluxe edition I'm more informed and have better patience. It really does have a lot to offer, just takes a bit of perseverance.

This is exactly what I did but over the summer.

Pretty much had every major Sim title for PS4 and knew that I had to buy all of them titles plus a few more that I couldn't get for Console for my new PC build.

So I made sure to wait for the Summer Sales on Steam and Gamepass pretty much getting RF2, AMS 2, Dirt Rally 2, Wreckfest, AC, ACC, All of the new top down games and PCARS 2 etc..

At the end of the day, there just isn't any Sim out there that is as deep yet daring of a title as pCARS 2. Still my go to meat n potatoes main Sim. So underrated.

try it even cheaper in nuuvem

but not for me, still is like Naah, after the big dissapointed pb1, i would keep with ac, acc, ams, ams2 r3e, even rf2 wich the ui sucks

Acquired june 2020, PC2 has become my annual sim preparation for real Le Mans Event, replacing my annual huge GTR2 +80 cars mixed classes real 24 hour event, driven through almost a week (using GTR2's 'Save Game' opportunity).

As a classic car head driving out PC2 the very first time in the classic 1959 Aston Martin DBR1/300 @ Le Mans Vintage track (must be 1970 layout, had really hoped for a 50ies layout!) left me with the impression that this was the 1st tier sim to rule them all (true!)

Driving a 2-hour timeframed 24 hour race of mixed GTC and GTD cars with mixed weather worked very well, though hillarious AI moves at times, but still competitive when you don't prepare weeks for perfect setup, but just jump-in&race.
  • Near-perfect FFB without any adjustment, just plug'n'play
  • Classic drum brake pedal simulation for classic cars felt right
  • Detailed car setup/pit strategy for endurance racing,
  • Quite good PC performance on my by then used i5-6600T lowTDP CPU using large grid mixed classes (almost as good performance as AMS2 delivers)
  • and many more features I've forgot now, but which gave me a good start.
But then driving modern mixed classes GT3-GTE-LMP1-LMP2-LMP3 at modern Le Mans circuit left me quite unredeemed.
Maybe due to I by that time mostly concentrated at ACC and could not ignore my comparison speaking modern GT simulation.

And then I examined the rest of the full PC2 package (bought the full officiel DLC's at not exactly new year sale prices) I got really dissapointed.

As Mike write: the game became very much hit-and-miss speaking car + track combos.

So now I concentrate on my very first expression, driving 2hour vintage GTC+GTD 24hour Le Mans events at a track of which I've preferred a1950ies version.

PC2 just had SO much potential for finally being the infamous 'GTR3' follow-up on GTR2.
So many good things to catch up on and improve - had really hoped for a Reiza-like AMS2 approach here.
Instead the developers sadly aimed for embracing the console market with the PC2 successor :(

But once a year (and rarely now and then) I have fun racing the good things/combos of PC2.

PC2 ain't THAT bad! :inlove:

For various reasons, I'm not able to race with my Wheel setup currently. From time to time I also like a Game where I can just have a bit of fun with a Controller. Most of the time I'm a Vintage Racing Purist and I can not live with the 'Festival party Vibe' of Games like Forza Horizon, or with the overexaggerated Action of Need for speed.
I was searching for something with a more serious undertone, that can be played OK with just a Controller. Some Vintage content would be a plus.
That is where PC2 delivers. I can't comment how the physics feel with FFB and all, but I can set up and drive with a Controller much better than with AC, for example. I tried it over the Holidays and it's a keeper. For the occasional Plug and Play experience.

And for Screenshots.;)

One of my most aggravating software purchases in 40 years.
Far better to have e.g. simply watched $24 blow away in the wind.
great potential
Potential is what rocks have before dropping from great heights.

A very under rated game and even works well with my G27 wheel (setting to 900 deg is essential). The weather effects are top notch as well without even maxing out on an older pc. PC2 is 4th on my list of great racing games behind ASM , rF2 and ACC (I had to add ACC to my list after ACC finally added the missing FFB for older wheels). PC2 Is an 8/10 imo.
