Project CARS 2 Could Be Worth Buying Now

Is Project CARS 2 Worth Buying 01.jpg
Project CARS 2 is on sale for 85% off as part of Steam's Winter Sale, and may be worth buying for some people who've held off until now.

Project CARS 2 will be remembered in the sim racing community as perhaps the most divisive title in the history of the genre. A huge car and track roster, an impressive weather system and excellent graphics and VR are held back by inconsistent car behaviour and AI, varying force feedback quality, and lackluster sounds. But the title isn't a complete write-off, and at 85% off during the Steam Winter Sale this might actually be a good time to add the title to your collection.

In spite of some common criticisms, Project CARS 2 does offer features that are generally well-liked. The car and track selection is extensive, and rare cars like the Aston Martin Vulcan and McLaren F1 are present along with interesting tracks like the Porsche test track and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. PC2 offers players a career mode that allows you to advance between various racing series, and even offers bonus modes like Rallycross and karting. Races and driving sessions can be set up for day or night (or a transition between the two either way) and in weather ranging from hot and sunny to thundershowers to snow. The VR implementation is another strength, as well as support for triple screens.

Some things PC2 has been criticized for include the frustrating AI racing, tinny sounds and inconsistent driving physics. The latter, compounded by force feedback that often lacks the same level of detail as its contemporaries, ruins the title completely for some users. Driving on certain car and track combinations can be a frustrating experience thanks to inconsistent behaviour between the cars. Group C and GT1 cars can be a blast to drive, whereas certain GT3 will require significant setup work to make the car drive in a similar fashion to any other sim on the market. Similarly, the force feedback can feel informative on some tracks with certain wheels, but other wheels and select tracks make even rough surfaces and curbs feel numb. AI racing difficulty will likely take a lot of tweaking to get right, and can vary greatly depending on the car class and track.

This isn't, of course, the most recent title in the series. Developer Slightly Mad Studios released Project CARS 3 in the summer of 2020. The title did improve in certain areas versus PC2, but the theme of the third game was notably different, and much of what makes Project CARS 2 fun was lost.

If you do decide to buy Project CARS 2, start with older content like the 1959 Aston Martin DBR1-300 or the Nissan R89C. If the force feedback isn't to your liking, there are FFB mod files that can be found in our Project CARS 2 downloads section. Rallycross racing can be a lot of fun as well, if you're looking for something a little different.

Project CARS 2 is a racing title with some well known flaws. If you can see past these flaws, however, there are lots of fun driving scenarios to explore. At 85% off on Steam, this might be a good time to finally add this to your collection.

Let us know your thoughts on Project CARS 2 in the comments below if you've tried it. Is it deserving of the criticism, or are some people unnecessarily shunning a fun racing title?

I think is a must have, it's true that still have some bugs, and physics on some cars is not what you call real, but with the new ffb like pops or silver, that you can download here on RD, the game change into something closer to simracing. On Pcars2 you can drive great classic Cars fun to drive like BMW 2002 stanceworks, and jewels like Ferrari 512 LM, Porsche 911 rsr, and some real hard to drive like Lotus 51, for me this car is uppon the others, difficult and with a great ffb, for sure is a must have with great tracks like Portimao, Watkins Glenn and some others great, you can name simcade, but a great game, still play some hours with my shifter H, no doubt if is cheap buy It, don't wait a ACC or Assetto but for sure you'll enjoy it, and don't forget use ffb Pops or silver ffb

As a "plug-and-play" sim-ish racing game, PC2 is probably the best out there. Plus, it's incredibly immersive and looks just gorgeous. Sort of a gateway drug into simracing without all the fuss associated with modding Assetto Corsa, setting up rFactor 2 or buying into iRacing.
ams2 is way more plug and play than pc2 and feels significantly better. ffb is good without custom files and the physics are drastically improved over pc2. the content is all much closer in quality too whereas in pc2 some cars are undrivable. there are a few cases like that with ams2 but they are generally keeping all cars at a similar quality level throughout development.

I agree this games improves great with silver or pops ffb

Christiaan pure FFB is what made me enjoy PCars2, have you tried it?
I have not tried silver or pops, but I will, nothing to loose, only up side, I might like one of them even better. There is definitely room for improvement.
Those files are so easy to use.
It is fascinating that other SMS engine titles are also relying on special file concoction to get a preferred FFB feeling.

Nah... if only I could sell my copy ...
If only i could sell my free copy of pC3 i got by a bloke trying to convince me i was better than any other sim....the whole franchise is not worth it, even if given away by Epic games for free!

It's not worth the money. I bought FM7 Ultimate for 20. Twice as much content, physics of the same caliber if not better (no crappy jello tires and suspension), customization, plus it's still relevant because there's no FM8 yet. Multiplayer is still fun. Some idiots here and there but all good overall.

It‘s a good game, especially in VR, but I would prefer Automobilista 2 anytime because it’s better.

it's very enjoyable, i still like to create wacky multiclass races to play with friends and AI, the multiple weather slots and seasons are great features

I keep PC2 on my PC for the Porsche 961, 924GTP and Ferrari F40 Competizione. Tough the driving feels good with Popracers ffb, the awful sounds always left a bitter taste after playing it. Still hoping some modders will mod PC2 sounds or port the cars to AMS2

vale la pena acquistare per LMP3 con il loro suono fantastico con cui correre a Monza e Le Mans. Davvero fantastico ;)

I bought AMS2 recently and it's clear to me that AMS2 fanboys can't admit that PC2 with the right ffb runs A LOT like their idol. I don't mind as I like PC2, but Reiza should have done a lot better than they have.
Reiza must change some values, released a DLC usa pt2 but they not finished It, so

Pc3 is just a "gimme your money" same cars like Pc2 and without great things from It. I often play ACC, Dirt2.0 and Assetto, and sometimes Pc2 with these "new" ffb, funny to drive

That's only the case if you're interested in road cars. I'd say the number of race cars is approximately the same in both games. In terms of tracks, Project CARS 2 has around 60 tracks while FM7 has only around 32 tracks.

Nope... This hasn't even anything to do with the physics engines, but a lot of the FM7 cars are awful copy and paste jobs from their older games.

Well, FM7 has been taken out the stores. You can't even buy the digital versions anymore.

I may give it a try at that price. My main concern is time. I already spend whatever free time I have on ACC, AC and AMS2. A fourth title to add to my already limited schedule? Hmmm... I don't know. I'll take a look at the selection of cars and tracks before buying.
You'll buy it out of curiosity :D

Doing a 60x accelerated Daytona 24 Hours in PC2 was a great experience. Game was a coherent whole, and I loved it. Been sim racing since GPL and while PC2 isn't up there with AC etc... It's really fun.

Just a shame the AI isn't fabulous.
+1. The day/night transition and 24 hour time cycle is still one of the best parts of PC2. It's just stunning

A nice variety of cars and tracks with full weather, time of day and live track. Runs pretty good on a potato (AMD 1600/Nvidia 1650s). Maybe 80% there as far as FFB and physics goes.

Its so much better than Project Cars 3, what a joke that was, should have never ever been released.
Well that's my opinion.
I own PC1 & PC2 since they were released and have had a buzz playing them.
Same reason why pop stars release 'best of albums' after their 2nd-3rd-4th then announces thair change of label or their breakup - contractural obligation - looked like they wanted to get out of their contract with Bandai - so, is that surprising?

It may not be fashionable to say, but I really enjoy PC2. I think I have approx 140 hours logged on Steam. I enjoy the immersion of setting up mixed class races with variable weather and times of day. I'm not that worried about modding so the included content on PC2 suits me fine. With modded FFB it feels great on my set up. No sim I know is perfect, and I've tried most of the current ones and go back to PC2 when I want some immersive, entertaining racing.
