Project CARS 2 Could Be Worth Buying Now

Is Project CARS 2 Worth Buying 01.jpg
Project CARS 2 is on sale for 85% off as part of Steam's Winter Sale, and may be worth buying for some people who've held off until now.

Project CARS 2 will be remembered in the sim racing community as perhaps the most divisive title in the history of the genre. A huge car and track roster, an impressive weather system and excellent graphics and VR are held back by inconsistent car behaviour and AI, varying force feedback quality, and lackluster sounds. But the title isn't a complete write-off, and at 85% off during the Steam Winter Sale this might actually be a good time to add the title to your collection.

In spite of some common criticisms, Project CARS 2 does offer features that are generally well-liked. The car and track selection is extensive, and rare cars like the Aston Martin Vulcan and McLaren F1 are present along with interesting tracks like the Porsche test track and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. PC2 offers players a career mode that allows you to advance between various racing series, and even offers bonus modes like Rallycross and karting. Races and driving sessions can be set up for day or night (or a transition between the two either way) and in weather ranging from hot and sunny to thundershowers to snow. The VR implementation is another strength, as well as support for triple screens.

Some things PC2 has been criticized for include the frustrating AI racing, tinny sounds and inconsistent driving physics. The latter, compounded by force feedback that often lacks the same level of detail as its contemporaries, ruins the title completely for some users. Driving on certain car and track combinations can be a frustrating experience thanks to inconsistent behaviour between the cars. Group C and GT1 cars can be a blast to drive, whereas certain GT3 will require significant setup work to make the car drive in a similar fashion to any other sim on the market. Similarly, the force feedback can feel informative on some tracks with certain wheels, but other wheels and select tracks make even rough surfaces and curbs feel numb. AI racing difficulty will likely take a lot of tweaking to get right, and can vary greatly depending on the car class and track.

This isn't, of course, the most recent title in the series. Developer Slightly Mad Studios released Project CARS 3 in the summer of 2020. The title did improve in certain areas versus PC2, but the theme of the third game was notably different, and much of what makes Project CARS 2 fun was lost.

If you do decide to buy Project CARS 2, start with older content like the 1959 Aston Martin DBR1-300 or the Nissan R89C. If the force feedback isn't to your liking, there are FFB mod files that can be found in our Project CARS 2 downloads section. Rallycross racing can be a lot of fun as well, if you're looking for something a little different.

Project CARS 2 is a racing title with some well known flaws. If you can see past these flaws, however, there are lots of fun driving scenarios to explore. At 85% off on Steam, this might be a good time to finally add this to your collection.

Let us know your thoughts on Project CARS 2 in the comments below if you've tried it. Is it deserving of the criticism, or are some people unnecessarily shunning a fun racing title?

It’s a fun game: I play with a controller and treat it like a Forza/GT game. PC2 does something no one else does, and I’m talking about a career mode - other sims do not focus on the FUN factor, physics aside

20yrs ago I started racing with the Forza series and wanted a little more...PC1 came about and I believed this game could possibly be that bridge I was looking for.
The game had tons of potential but a bitter taste was left in my mouth twice when they abandoned the support after a yr to move onto the next addition, which made it quite clear the series was nothing more than a money grab.

Looking at PC2 and it great content it's a bit of a shame it didn't get further support.

Now I have AMS2 which has improved the physics and ffb but I'm again waiting for bugs, improvements and features to be added.

To be honest, I now wish SMS had of sold the rights of PC2 to Reiza and allow them to continue development as I much prefer the content of PC2 over AMS2

Perhaps one day, abandoned games can be treated like classic Music Libraries, sold off to be remastered by current studios. PC2 and RBR would be great candidates for such (unlikely) treatment.

As a console player, I believe PC2 is still the best all round sim for consoles. It's relatively accessible, even on a controller, and has a huge variety of content, something that other simulation focused titles on console, mainly being AC and ACC, do lack a bit. And it does run quite well on consoles, compared to ACC in particular, although that will likely change when ACC gets its next gen upgrade in February.

I still very much enjoy PC2, and the variety of content is excellent. The quality varies, but a lot of the older cars are very good, especially the old Prototypes, and the Vintage Le Mans track is great fun as well.

Well we're starting to see that with some other games already. I think a couple of Final Fantasy games have already been done, and a few others.

First one I want remastering is Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 4 please

I quite enjoyed this title back in the days, with about 400 hours, every DLC's, and VR
The problem was too many GT3 public servers... other categories were a rare sight in the server browser :(
But the content is brutal with so many cars and tracks!!
My favourite are: Fiorano test track, Porsche test track, Le Mans, Daytona 24h, Hybrid LMPs, GT3 Renault RS, Speed 8

Mike thank you for having the balls to talk about PCars 2. It is not fashionable for the RD crowd, even though the steam charts say other wise, PCars 2 still pulls double the daily players count of AMS2 and RF2.
Yes it should have had real support from SMS to fix all that is still wrong with it today, instead they just let it there to rot, but a lot of people still enjoy it for good reasons. The graphic prowess both in pancake and VR, is of course a good feature, but, with a carefully chosen FFB custom profile and curated content, PCars2 can deliver a very decent SIM experience.
Anyone not able to get that is doing it wrong.
On that subject, some content, with a DD wheel, in PCars 1 can also be surprisingly entertaining, Showing that back then, in the hands of a developers driven by passion instead of greed, the SMS engine had potential for greatness.

while we see ACC developers writing hundred word posts explaining why VR is not a good experience here we have PC2 delivering world class VR visuals with ZERO compromises, if only they had the physics and AI dialed in we all would be playing this game instead of AC and its mods..

Premium
I first encountered racing games with Gran Turismo and Forza on the consoles with my kid (I'm an old). Those led me to upgrade to PC2, which in turn led me to Assetto Corsa. I think it's a great game to help casual players make the transition from games to more serious sims.

I have to be honest about the PC2 visuals they're very good - I went back to my beloved Assetto Corsa to compare and I thought I had gone blind. I was thinking to myself "god damn it why didn't I listen to my mom about the carrots all those years ago" but my eyes adjusted within 5 mins and all was good in the world again.

I quite enjoy PCars 2 for some quick pick up and play driving. I get bored FAST and PC2 has enough racing disciplines to keep me entertained without having to bounce around different games all day.
About a year ago I ran in a league with a huge group of other drivers and it was quite stable and fun.

The career mode is fleshed out pretty well, too. Although I could live without the amount of rain races it throws in. The AI is better than most human drivers you'll find in public lobbies :)

The Rallycross is what holds my interest the most. IMO, AMS1 was probably the only game that did Rallycross better, but it lacks the amount of content found in PC2.

Not my favorite game by a long shot, but I never quite understood all the hate.

Just wait another year or two, AMS2 is quickly becoming what PC2/PC3 should have been... (much better FFB, better sound, etc...)
I've already been waiting 10yrs to see the potential of this engine....what's another 2yrs at this point lol

I just wish I could of have experienced it through the PC2 content and not a Gol hotcar or Fusca classic lol
Hopefully, they will continue to add more "popular known content" or land a modern series license and fill the field.

Its so much better than Project Cars 3, what a joke that was, should have never ever been released.
Well that's my opinion.
I own PC1 & PC2 since they were released and have had a buzz playing them.
PC1 is even better than PC2

Same boat as you, I loved the Rallycross in PC2 but SMS half assed the online format and killed any chance of a MP Rallycross community by not incorporating practice sessions and heats online...straight to race which was ridiculous.

I'm hoping Reiza implement it properly and release quality content in the upcoming adrenaline DLC but my gut tells me it will most likely be rehashed AMS1 Brazilian content.

The only quality Rallycross for mp which is properly formated is iRacing...which gives you several cars and tracks for rookie class as part of the content that comes with your base subscription.
Pro lite 2 truck, VW beetle and VW beetle lite with races every 30min or hr

Yes! We'd always run 2 races at each Rallycross course in PC2. One "practice" then one real race. Worked fine for some dumb fun for sure.

iRacing's Rallycross was what got me into iRacing for sure. Forgot about that one :)
