The RaceDepartment Podcast: A special with Fat-Alfie! (S03, E11)

RD Podcast.jpg
Once again the infamous trio, Paul Glover, Daniel Monteiro and Davide Nativo sat down together in the virtual studio to record a new episode of the RaceDepartment Podcast. Not just any episode, mind you, but another in the Specials series, this time interviewing the one and only Fat-Alfie (David Pemberton) from the Assetto Corsa modding community that we host here on RD!

Featuring the first time Paul Glover gets to play and hear his national anthem on the podcast, the four of us talked about a plethora of topics with Fat-Alfie, discussing sims, past and future projects, personal life and throwing in the usual shenanigans here and there. It adds another, more personal layer to the one already uncovered in the previous interview with David published back in April.

You really don't want to miss this! Put on your headphones and join us!

Okay! This sound like a good idea for a podcast series but lose the 'hard' music at the beginning.
The volume almost blew my ears out (I wear in-ear headphones)....totally wasn't expecting that.
I'm not here for music....I'm here for information and to hear modders.
The only 'music' I want to hear is a howling V8, V10 or V12.

VETO! :p

Maybe it's just me but I find it somewhat weird to hear somebody speak for the first time after communicating with them for years on the forums.

Understandable that you don't like the music and that it might almost blow your ears out. But the music is actually the same volume, if not a bit lower than the talking and it has a slight fade-in to not give an instant volume punch to the ears.

And believe me, the drums intro is way nicer than getting Paul's "Hello and welcome" too loud into the ears :D

Overall the podcast is mastered to be similar peak volume like standard music to make transitioning between music and the podcast easy and without the need to turn up the volume.
I personally hate to listen to a podcast, having to turn up the volume and then get my ears blown out by an incoming e-mail or changing to a music track.

So I'm not sure how it did happen for you. Apparently the volume was way too loud for any normally mastered audio. What did you listen to before starting the podcast?

Great listen, thanks for giving up your time for this guys.

One thing that really resonated with me was the talk of not wanting to be contracted to something that you enjoy for risk of it spoiling a hobby. A few times in my past I've fallen into the trap of accepting paid work in things that I enjoyed (in motorsports, but not in gaming) and found that the instant I was contractually obliged to produce something it took all the fun away and I couldn't do it any more.

Fortunately, stepping back was an instant cure each time and I know myself well enough now, but I thought that was just me.

Anyway, I've waxed lyrical about FatAlfie's tracks and the unique level of immersion they provide many a time, but always nice to know about the motivations and behind-the-username.

(Put me down for another +1 about the intro music though!)

What an enjoyable episode!
Thank you for all the time invested, by all, to bring this out for the community.

I'm currently participating in the @Fat-Alfie Championship with Multiclass, and although is not with vintage cars from the years of yonder, the tracks are a true joy to race in. Challenging and beautiful, full of detail and livelyhood (I have yet to stop by a bench to find those easter eggs but I'll certainly try once while just driving about).

David comes across as a very relaxed but truly dedicated modder, what a delight to hear about his creative process, in his own words. As a fellow designer I was nodding and laughing about issues he comes across in his professional life, especially when balancing that with his passion for making tracks. I don't do modding but do have other creative hobbies that take priority over work at times so his juggling of priorities was very recongnisable.

I want to take this opportunity to thank David Pemberton for all the time and dedication he has put in every single track he's made, with all heart and sweat. His is a labor of love and passion from which we all benefit with delight. This community is the more richer with people like him. Helmet off to you sir! :notworthy:

Looking forward to more podcasts with other community members, it's fantastic to hear the voices behind the names and stories. It shows how rich with talent RaceDepartment truly is. Thanks guys!
