Weekly Hotlap Challenge Episode 1 – DiRT Rally 2.0 Group A Mitsubishi in Australia

RaceDepartment Weekly Hotlap Ep1 01.jpg
In the first weekly hotlap challenge, we want to see what kind of times you can achieve in DiRT Rally 2.0 using a Group A Mitsubishi on a wet Australian course.

Welcome to the first in a series of weekly hotlap challenges. This time out, we’re rally racing in DiRT Rally 2.0. For future challenges we’ll be trying out different cars across a variety of sims. Here are the parameters for this week’s challenge:

Sim: DiRT Rally 2.0
Stage: Rockton Plains / Monaro, Australia
Car: Group A Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI
Conditions: Daytime / Cloudy / Wet surface

We want to see what kind of times you can achieve here. Post your times below, and a link to a video of your run if you wish. If you have any tips to share with the RD community for achieving better times, please feel free to share them.

The times to beat are as follows:
Bronze = 3:50 to 4:15
Silver = 3:30 to 3:49.999
Gold = 3:20 to 3:29.999
Platinum = sub 3:20

Here is my own (rather unimpressive) attempt:

Good luck to all, and above all, have fun!

It took a few attempts but i managed to do a platinum time with 3:18.863 using a setup from "Rally Technical".

Love challenges like this, and already look forward to next week.
Probably wont have a chance of posting platinum times on any of the circuit-racing-games, but im gonna give it a try!

Edit: Sorry for the bad audio, something went wrong when i captured the replay.

3:21,378 steering only with my right hand due to dislocated left shoulder last week. Used left hand only for downshifting. Far from perfect run as I'm still trying to adapt to this :)

Is there any difference between dry and wet surface? Looks not.
If you're talking about visual, it depends on your shader setting. Shader = high there is, shader = low there isn't.

If you're talking about traction it really varies depending on level of rain. On Time trial you can't have rain you only have wet surface. On custom races / club races you can have rain. But there certainly is a difference between dry and wet.

Ok, I know i must be missing something but how do you select a quick rally in DR2? I'm sure DR1 had the option but i can't see a quick rally in DR2? Cheers for any advice.

It's called Time Trial under the Freeplay tab.

Well, I haven't driven much DR2 for a while :)
Played with the setup while learning the stage, never really convinced myself that anything I did was making it better, so ended up back on the default but with soft tyres cos... that oughta help on a damp stage, I suppose?
My best so far is comfortably outside Gold pace - 3:36.365 - and I reckon that the best I could hope for with more practice (against the spirit of rallying!) is something in the high 20s. (Crazy fast times there from @Borgen and @Esa Ahonen!)

I would suppose first to learn the stage. There are some key corners where you can loose time.
Drive with standard setup and when you think you know the stage good so then try to work on setup.
Otherwise you dont see the improvement or do it even worse.

My run is not the perfect one but for me ok.
I will try to drive cleaner because i know i can do it better. :)
Ive watched now few setup videos on Yt and try to change my settings.
Guess 5 seconds are for me possible.

But how some people get 3:14 there???
Ok, its the Lancia but its in the same car class.... but due to my experience the Lancer is little bit "slower" then the Lancia.

Hey, it's all relative, and we can't all be aliens ;)
(Not to mention, we aren't that awful, given the position of the scroll-bar indicator on the far right!)
(Oh and that reminds me, why oh why didn't they make that little indicator an actual slider that you could drag to move up and down the time listings? SOOOOO many UI fails in DR2.)

I'm happy with this. Not especially fast but a lot of fun.

Do you prefer licensed hardware?

  • Yes for me it is vital

  • Yes, but only if it's a manufacturer I like

  • Yes, but only if the price is right

  • No, a generic wheel is fine

  • No, I would be ok with a replica
