Just seven races remain in the 2021 Formula One season, and just two points separate the two top drivers as they enter the Turkish Grand Prix.
It’s an F1 driver’s championship duel that will be discussed for years to come. The winningest driver in Formula One history has his hands full with a young and talented champion-to-be. After 14 races Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are seperated in the standings by just two points.
Last time out, the field battled it out in Russia and produced an exciting race at a track that seldom produces much action worth discussing. The brilliant season of Lando Norris looked to finally produce a win for him, but late rain and a tire strategy decision cost him a late lead. The win instead went to Lewis Hamilton after a poor start. Max Verstappen delivered more than most thought he would in Sochi after a power unit swap had him starting at the back of the grid, when he climbed all the way to a second-place finish.
The most impressive team of late has been McLaren. Norris and teammate Daniel Ricciardo have both looked strong in the past two races. While it’s too late to battle for the constructor's championship this season, McLaren is looking like they could be a legitimate contender next season alongside Mercedes and Red Bull. This of course assumes these teams will field contending cars in deference to the new regulations.
And speaking of the constructor’s championship, this year’s battle between Mercedes and Red Bull is still very much undecided. Over thirty points separate the two teams at this point, with Mercedes out in front with 397.5 points to Red Bull’s 364.5. Much of the difference is due to a recent run of poor finishes from Sergio Perez. If he can return to form and Mercedes suffers any hard luck, that gap could quickly be narrowed.
