The publishers behind the legendary Grand Prix series and Grand Prix Manager games, MicroProse, are back with a new iteration of their Open Wheel Manager series.

Immerse yourself in the world of top-flight motorsport management while enjoying a throwback to 1990s F1 in Open Wheel Manager 2 - that is the direction that legendary publisher MicroPose are headed with this new title. The nostalgia seems to be just right, and the vibe of this motorsport manager title could make you recall the Grand Prix Manager games of the 1990s the publisher also released.

This strategic racing management title lets you take control of each aspect of your racing team from everyday operations to hiring drivers and engineers and even the design and manufacturing of your cars. It looks like true throwback to a beloved motorsport management series.

Developed by Paprikash, a small studio particularly interested in "smart oldschool games like managers, strategy, wargames with non-cartoonish graphics", according to their own website. Open Wheel Manager 2 had been released to Steam Early Access in October of 2023.

Gameplay Mechanics

You can alter, adapt, and engage with race action as you would expect from a management game. The new 3D Raceview, which looks like a fantastic way to see each battle on the circuit. A birds-eye view with the 2D Raceview, meanwhile, is an excellent alternative to keep an overview over what is happening at the front and the back of the pack.

The gameplay has a certain level of nostalgia from the original MicroProse motorsport management titles

The alternative is to simulate the race and go straight to the results. Should you decide on doing this, the commentary will still break down the major highlights for you so that you can keep on top of what your on and off-track rivals are doing.

The gameplay mechanics take a playthrough or two over one or two seasons each to understand, and in hindsight, I would recommend playing with a frontrunner team with lots of cash and buildings/facilities already built on your first playthrough. This is because your ability to negotiate, research, design, and build/produce parts are tied to points for each category.

You only receive a certain amount per week based on a combination of factors including staff quality, facility construction level, and manager skills. - Jeff Gordon, via Steam Review
