BeamNG.drive's New Rally Mode Has Prolific Potential

A new main menu button appears within the newly released BeamNG.drive 0.34 version: Rally. Multiple videos and articles have discussed BeamNG's potential to create a rally simulator for the last few years. With this latest 0.34 update, that vision is becoming a reality.

While the mode is still very much in its pre-release 'Experimental' period, it is great to see the developers utilizing and creating racing-based modes for disciplines that sim racers have wanted for years. The world of rally simulators is an ultra-competitive market in 2024. However, it seems that BeamNG is planning to take on the giants of EA Sports WRC and DIRT Rally 2.0 - or at least their racing discipline.

Turning BeamNG Into A Rally Simulator

Within Rally Mode, a new menu allows you to select which stage and car you want to drive. Similar to the Scenarios menu, there are filters and a search bar; however, with only the three stages available, those features are currently inept in 0.34.

From this new menu, you can access the three rally stages: SS Clyde Peak, which is classified as medium difficulty and is entirely on Tarmac at the top of the Automation Test Track dam; SS Fastello-Norte, which takes place in the tight, twisty streets of Italy and is classified as 'Hard'; as is the final stage, SS Howlers Pass, a gruelling offroad challenge set deep within Jungle Rock Island.

SS Clyde Peak

The first stage recommended for all players, Clyde Peak, is an uphill stage that takes you through the mountains above the Automation Test Track. Not many players will have been to this section of the map, and seeing the quality of the road transformed into a rally stage is excellent news for the future of rally mode.

Watch out for the ice and snow at the top of the Automation test track; it is deadly!

SS Fastello-Norte

The second stage, and by far the most interesting and realistic, is SS Fastello-Norte. It starts in the city streets of the small village within the Italy map; you then fly through the backroads of the Italian map, with walls and signs closing in on all sides throughout the stage.

Italy's tight streets make the start of this rally stage a real challenge.

SS Howler Pass

Unfortunately, the final stage in the BeamNG rally stage trio, SS Howler Pass, is the worst of the three when compared to a real rally stage. Jungle Rock Island is extremely bumpy, to the point that it could be considered a step above the real-life safari rally in the WRC. As an experience in a much more capable car, the stage is great fun. However, the official cars on offer do not match the rough terrain's requirements.

With ruts and jumps whilst running inches away from trees, the only gravel stage is undoubtedly challenging.

Pacenotes & Modding Support

With rally mode implemented in 0.34, the pace notes are only available in visual form. Do not lose hope just yet; audible pace notes may well find their way into BeamNG's Rally mode sooner rather than later.

"There are no audio pacenotes supported currently. While we don’t want to make promises, this is a high priority. We are starting with visual pacenotes because it covers all languages." - dirtwheel

In a letter to the community, the 'Rally' mode conceptualiser and BeamNG developer, dirtwheel, reassured the keen modding community of the role they can play in the future of this new addition to BeamNG. Despite the humble beginnings of the mode, modded stages are being encouraged and actively promoted, but not straight away.

"Rally Mode is based on the ai pacenotes mod. There are many existing stages created by modders and it’s important that those stages continue to work. However, since this is an EXPERIMENTAL EARLY PREVIEW, there may be periods where existing mod stages are broken. We do not recommend making new mod stages.

Modders are welcome to create new Rally Mode stages, but no promises that future BeamNG releases will maintain compatibility. If you make stages, we’d like to hear your feedback on how to improve the process." - dirtwheel

Despite the mode's early stage of development, the potential for a fantastic rally simulator on both tarmac and gravel is certainly there. Of course, the lack of audible pace notes and drivable stages is currently stopping the progress, but both of these issues are on the way to being solved, so keep your eyes open for an update in the early months of 2025.

What do you think about the potential of the new experimental Rally mode? Let us know in the comments down below!

If it wasn't summer when my sim racing time is limited I'd be all over this...

It could really be a momentous update for sim rallying as outside of RBR it's pretty barren for the sim rally enthusiast...

98% and 97% positivity + $24.99US = no brainer

P.S.
What's amazing they have double the reviews as AC which would indicate they have sold more units and I may be wrong but they don't have to pay for any content or need to sell DLC.
3rd party is free and booming and Vulkan runs excellent.
As well it's the only next level multi environment sim out there.

Fantastic write up Connor...it's getting exciting now:geek:

Having a blast in the 'Rally' trail and although there are other Rally Simulators on the market and still early days, BeamNG Rally could add that extra 5% magic...another one to add to the list to keep me personally happy, and I do not have to leave the game and fire up another Game to try Rally out. (personal opinion and preferences only;))

Prolific Potential

I took it as eventually drawing in a whole new userbase.

Rally sims to date don't give you any features / changeable things whatsoever I ever seen ?
They're all plug and play.

A few sims have tried the cater for all route with little success.
Think of Go Karts, pCars on ice and AMS foray into offroad which they dropped like a hot potato for #2.

I also think it has the potential for Go Kart simulation.
Then what about fair dinkum drag racing.
You could simulate drive and drag events

Beam has always offered prolific potential ;)
280K+ reviewers say so and 35th in all time ratings all games, only sim higher is ETS 2.

People in ETS 2 though are getting fed up with never ending DLC and little engine enhancement.

P.S. I also think they won't have to take on WRC or Dirt.
Off-roaders are a special breed they will buy everything anyway.

The world of rally simulators is an ultra-competitive market in 2024?

This 2024? or some other 2024 I'm not aware of?

We have EA competing against themselves with an c-grade platform, and almost no player base.

BeamNG's trial of a Rally entry into their Sim is exciting. While I don't see it competing with other games or sims in this area, it adds another entertaining genre of driving and racing within the Sim. This means I don't have to leave the Sim and start up a more purpose-built game or sim of the same genre. From my personal perspective, it's a fantastic addition.

Another example would be 'Aircraft.' Although options are limited in BeamNG and again not competing with the more purpose built 'MFS', I can spawn my favorite 'B25 Bomber,' fly around the map, crash land in the canyons of Utah, and then spawn in a 'Rock Crawler' to navigate out of the canyon to the road above. From there, I can spawn a road-going car and drive to the nearest petrol station to raise the alarm about the aircraft crash. And if that's not enough, I can spawn a large T-Series recovery vehicle, return to the aircraft, and attempt to recover it.

...all this in one Sim without leaving....just my personal preferences of what I find entertaining;)

I mean really there is no accounting for the 2 in every 100 reviewers last month that never liked it.
That could be anyone of a number of human conditions :giggle:

If I ever need comedy I just go read rF2 / LMU and Beam negative reviews :coffee:

I have BeamNG and I like rallying. I will try again, last time I tried the offroad driving seemed fun but the tarmac driving was really underwhelming, which put me off together with the fantasy cars. I also bought EA WRC and uninstalled it after a few hours. I keep going back to AC for an engaging tarmac rally experience, I so much hope someone does something to give us a proper rally sim which finally replaces RBR.

Yeah, that´s nice. But how about getting the career mode done first?
It says coming soon for TWO YEARS.

Yeah - how about hiring a modder, who completes the career mode?
Yes, there is a Mod team that works on the Career Mode....'RLS Career' Mod which has more than the vanilla in game career mode.

However, being a Mod the team is regrouping to make it compatible with the BeamNG 0.34 update....this is just the usual formula for most Modders.

As previously mentioned by @M D Gourley, there is a team that creates a more in-depth and polished career mode experience. However, the main development team behind BeamNG updates and adds content to the career mode in each update.

It might seem like a long wait, but for the quality of each update in comparison to the size of the team working on the game, I would say they are making good progress!

Wow! I've been saying for ages that this was secretly the best rally sim around and now they're focusing on it. This is going to be huge.
I agree! It's great to see the dev team reaching out into the world of rally, so much untapped potential!
