It is crunch time for Formula One, with the sport coming into its third-to-last event in Las Vegas. Both the teams' and drivers' championships are still up for grabs. Who will come out on top in Sin City?

After one of the best races of the season so far last time out in Brazil, the Las Vegas Grand Prix has much to live up to. The circuit has not produced a classic in its 2023 debut, but the race has been far from the worst on the 2023 calendar.

GPDA At War With The FIA

The FIA and its president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, have turned their backs on Formula One drivers after not responding to or addressing the drivers' concerns after a public statement was released by the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA). The statement details that the FIA was to "Stop treating their drivers like children", and was released over two weeks ago. The FIA has had nothing to say on the matter, or at least not publicly.

The statement covered Ben Sulayem's reaction to Max Verstappen's explosive team radio outbursts, the fines imposed, and the FIA president's “tone and language.”

"If we feel we are being listened to and some of the changes we are requesting are implemented because we are only doing it for the benefit of the sport, then maybe our confidence will increase. There are several drivers who feel fed up with the whole situation, and it only seems to be going, to a degree, in the wrong direction.” - George Russell, Media Day Las Vegas 2024

VCARB's Dazzling Glitter-inspired Las Vegas Livery

In more glamorous news, the VCARB team has created a "Glitter-inspired" livery that resembles something you would create in F1 24 MyTeam. It will stand out under the floodlit streets of Las Vegas, but will Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson be able to extract any more pace out of a promising VCARB car following on from Brazil?

Red Bull's junior team is no stranger to a flashy special livery, especially in Las Vegas. Last year, when the team were running under the guise of Alpha Tauri, a "Speed Streaks" livery took to the track and was certainly a standout design.

Pierre Gasly's Perfect Record

The Frenchman's perfect record might not put him at the front of the field, but his team certainly appreciates Pierre Gasly's ability to keep his A524 out of the walls and away from other cars' accidents. Gasly is the only driver on the grid not to have cost his team a single Euro in crash damages throughout the 2024 Formula One season.

With Las Vegas this weekend and Abu Dhabi as the finale, plus Qatar nestled in the middle, the Frenchman is not guaranteed to finish the season with a clean damage bill. However, he has a wide budget left for him to fall back on if the worst was to happen.

Alpine And Sauber Join The Livery Party

It seems that the customs officers have refused to release the back marker teams' regular cars, forcing Alpine, Sauber and VCARB to run one-off or limited-edition liveries for the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.

Alpine has had some success this year, including a shock double podium in Brazil. This result catapulted the team up the constructor's table to sixth from ninth. The A524 will run a majority pink livery for the remaining three rounds of the World Championship.

Sauber has teamed up with their title sponsor, KICK, to design a flame-inspired livery for this weekend's Grand Prix; sadly, if Sauber continues on its current trajectory, those flames will be extinguished rather swiftly.

With new talent coming in with Gabriel Bortoleto for 2025, the future looks bright for the soon-to-be Audi team. The potential is there, but the results must follow to ensure Audi is a serious competitor in future seasons.

Guess The Podium Returns For Las Vegas

After one of the most surprising results of the season last time out in Brazil, with the two Alpines taking second and third place, Guess The Podium returns with that year of premium membership still up for grabs!

After the first round of the competition at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the standings look like this: OverTake's @Rene / GRunner and @Pete Conway, who had the idea for the contest, lead the standings on five points apiece, with the rest of the field bringing up the rear on a dazzling 0 points.

Ten points will be awarded for guessing the right position and the correct name, and five points will be awarded for guessing the right name but the wrong position. At the end of the season, we will award the overall winner one year of Premium membership here on OverTake. With only three rounds left, it is anyone's game!

Las Vegas Grand Prix Schedule

Regardless of where in the world you are, the Las Vegas Grand Prix will inevitably be a race you will not want to miss. Whilst yes, it is another street circuit, the title fight between McLaren's Lando Norris and Red Bull's Max Verstappen is fierce and will almost inevitably boil over on race day.

I'm coming out in support the drain covers, most of which have been unceremoniously buried alive this year, and all of this suffering and torture just for few people to drive their upside down aeroplanes around the streets.

FREEEEE Las Vegas Drain Covers. (try singing it to "Free Nelson Mandela" - it works)

Apparently "everybody loves a winner".

But Las Vegas ....a sideshow; racing is secondary to a gaudy overblown production. I'm surprised they don't put sequins and glitter on the cars.

Will this is a pleasant surprise. The sessions are on during the day for me (Melbourne, AUS). In fact its similar to the times they would be run if they were actually here in Melbourne. I can actually watch the race live Sunday afternoon here. I don't remember this being the case last year.

I mean... Technically, the VCARB is inspired by glitter, if that counts!

I must admit, the weeks before the Las Vegas race last year, and for sure after the first two practice sessions, I was thinking this is one of the most stuped races ever been on the F1 calendar. But after the race it turned out to be not so bad at all. And now I am even looking forward to it to what it will bring us this year.

Uh this race as bad as Miami, to much glitter and rich people. Highlights only for me. Max has this one done and dusted. Just waiting for next season now.

Mercedes are looking fast in the cold on a low grip first and second practice, Ferrari are looking long run strong, Mclaren are there or thereabouts and Red Bull seem to be finding the track slippery.

And both Haas's and the Alpine of Gasley seem to have nibbled their way firmly into the top ten.

It looks like an interesting weekend ahead!

Red Bull allegedly brought the wrong rear wing to this race, so the WDC is likely continuing to Qatar. Though this is Norris we're talking about, and he finds innovative ways to lose or otherwise be an unlikable chump to the point where I'm ready to cheer for Max again.
