Had this video recommended to me and it does a good job highlighting the aging Power & Glory mod in its best light.

I will try to highlight going forward that "Action Required" items are only required to upgrade existing installs and when not using installer/uninstallers like JSGME/OVGME.

So, [Action Required] items are not actually required for new installs or when using installer/uninstallers like JSGME/OVGME.

I will try to add a *note to each item when to indicate when it's optional going forward.

PS. I highly recommend JSGME/OVGME to make install/uninstalls clean and automatic. I use and recommend OVGME for its ability to install from ZIP'd mods, saving you space.

GTR233 has been working on Power & Glory fixes in his GTR2 HQ Anniversary Patch which, at this point, should be fully compatible with SHO PnG Retrofit:

The fixes are available under the GTR2_SETUP.CMD script page "XVI - PnG3 HQ Anniversary Patch"

I haven't tried this yet but it if it's anything like the HQ GTR2 fixes and enhancements it'll be great, too.

Added new demonstration video for V5 in the Overview

Shovas vs SHO PnG Retrofit V5 at Thruxton 1960s in the 1974 Ford Escort RS 1600 2.0L Driver's-Eye (GTR2 Edition)

Not the best racing experience as AI don't do as well here as at other tracks but I wanted to highlight Thruxton anyway as I haven't done a video for it yet.

HD is still processing. Hopefully it kicks in soon.

I'm currently making my way through testing two decades of BSCC championships and came across this beautiful revival-style race of vintage cars the kind you can find in P&G and this mod racing on modern Laguna Seca

Added new demonstration video for V5-wip in the Overview

Shovas vs Ingliston Short 1987 in the 1972 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 GTA Junior WB Driver's-Eye (GTR2 Edition)

It was a little crazy but also highlighted how fun old racing could be.

Version 4 (2022-08-06..2022-09-19)

Highlights:
  • [Tracks]New Added Tracks:
    • Spa 1967 by Zwiss (Replaces Spa 1966 which had unreliable AI)
    • Spa 1978 by derDumeklemmer
    • Spa 1988 by derDumeklemmer
  • [Racing] Tested every track to ensure they all provided at least a minimum acceptable racing experience. Will keep improving in the future.
Action Required:
  • [Action Required] Ensure "Crash Recovery" is enabled in your UserData PLR for an improved AI experience on tracks the AI weren't specifically trained for
  • [Action Required] Enable "Autocalibrate AI Mode" in your UserData PLR for an improved AI experience on tracks the AI weren't specifically trained for
Full Release Notes:

  • [Action Required]Enabled Crash Recovery in UserData PLR to help with AI crashing and never being towed. Don't ask me why I had this disabled before since I think it's enabled by default *facepalm*
    • Edit your \GTR2\UserData\<User>\<User>.PLR file and set the following parameter: Crash Recovery="1"
  • [Action Required]This version of the mod was developed and tested with "Autocalibrate AI Mode" to improve AI behaviour on tracks they weren't specifically designed for.
    • Edit your \GTR2\UserData\<User>\<User>.PLR file and set the following parameter: Autocalibrate AI Mode="1"
    • My notes on this parameter: In these early gMotor versions, appears to train AI as they lap but no data is saved so AI reset every session. Unsure which sessions this applies (practice, qualify, warmup, race, all?). It does seem to help AI reliability and competitiveness.
    • I wrote more testing details here: https://www.racedepartment.com/thre...calibrate-ai-mode-in-gtr2.242188/post-3568370
  • [Tracks] Added Spa 1988 by derDumeklemmer (Spa1988_PnG_V2_3.7z)
  • [Tracks] Added Spa 1978 by derDumeklemmer (Spa1988_PnG_V2_3.7z)
  • [Tracks] Added Spa 1967 (Spa.1967.v2.0.GTR2.rar) to replace Spa 1966 which was removed
  • [Tracks] Removed Spa 1966 (Spa66_PnG_V1_1.7z) which was great except for unreliable AI I couldn't figure out how to fix
  • [Tracks] Remove Practice/Qualify/Warmup duration parameters in Location GDBs (only Croft 1990s and Spa 1966) so they use defaults like the other tracks.
  • [Tracks] Updated all tracks RaceTime/RaceLaps/RaceLapsScaled to be consistent. That is, RaceLaps = Average Laps per RaceTime. Ie. 90 Laps over 180min if lap time is around 2min.
  • [Test] Tested all tracks for Qualifying vs Race pace (ie. AIW RaceRatio) for a minimum acceptable racing experience
  • [README] Updated REAMDE Install section to reflect use of Autocalibrate AI Mode. Added release notes to highlight required action to edit PLR and set Autocalibrate AI Mode.
  • [MOD] Added original P&G files in \MOD\SHO PnG Retrofit\Originals\ that I modify or plan to modify, as a backup
I found this version of Nords 1975 such a pleasure to drive in the Giulia 1300 GTA I decided to record the race.

There are still some issues with AI crashing and never disappearing from the track, particularly in qualifying, and that resulted in random gridding, but all the same most AI did pretty well and the race was pretty decent.

I'm going through tracks right now to fix them up and make sure they're in decent condition for AI races for the next release of the mod.

Grab the track even if you don't have Retrofit:

Another demonstration video, this time for V3. While there's not a lot of action in this one, this was actually a good race and AI performance was representative of their qualifying.

For V4, I'm going through existing tracks to make sure races are viable, AI race performance matches qualifying performance, races don't finish too early (RaceLaps vs RaceTime issue), and whatever else I can find to fix.

Had another good race just now at Brands Hatch 1970s but I wasn't recording.

I'm aware of a number of issues that impact the reality of actually running good, clean races.

Tracks can have issues like slow formation laps.

There's still issues with race length when done by time instead of laps.

There are Race vs Qualifying performance reliability issues which I plan to fix in future releases.

I work best with a 'release early release often' schedule so things won't be perfect right off the bat. But frequent releases keep things small, manageable, interesting, and fun in small doses, helping to avoid burnout. So I'll be fixing issues over time.

You can check the Plans doc for where I record all these types of things. Usually I pull from those items when I start a new release.

I've been slowly working my way through testing full qualifying and race sessions on each track.

I was naively hopeful that all tracks would just work for races but that was simplistic.

Things like:

- Skipping formation lap bugged: "Cannot wave green yet". Have to run formation lap which does work but the cars are incredibly slow going around. You also waste some of the race time going around.

- Formation lap AI lines can be wonky: AI going way off track around corners

- Races end too early. Not sure what's up.

- AI lines during race can be better, lots of off-tracks, and slow lines. I don't have experience with this.

- AI not matching Qualifying performance in a Race. They're much slower in a race. Results in making it too easy to pass them all. Has to do with AIW RaceRatio tuning which I have a lot of experience with.

So, I plan to keep testing existing tracks and hopefully make what fixes I can and bundle that with the next release.

Speaking of the next release, it will feature the 1963 European Touring Car Championship with most races available (some races don't have a track available to run).

The AI need work and the P&G AI probably just aren't tuned for these tracks. Maybe in the future we'll iron that out.
I contacted the admin/owner of touringcarracing.net, a tribute site to the British Saloon/Touring Car Championship and the European Touring Car Championship, and received permission to use text and photos from the site. Some of the photos are high quality vintage racing shots.

I've been using the site so far as a historical reference for building championships.

I plan to use the text and photos to spruce up the championship descriptions and provide valuable history and a synopsis about each race.

If you're familiar with YouTuber GPLaps, it's the kind of thing he throws in all the time and it really rounds out and fills in historic races and makes for a greater sense of immersion.

I'm presently just waiting to hear back from some authors for permissions.

I have permissions from the authors who converted tracks and, just doing my due diligence, I'm contacting original track authors, as well. A number of these authors have been inactive for years, though. I don't expect to hear from some of them.

I won't let extra permissions hold up the release too long as I already have the permissions from primary authors or authors who worked with others and spoke on their behalf.

What's in Version 2:
  • Expanded list of tracks (with permission)...
    • Aintree 1960s by Philrob
    • Brands Hatch 1970s (EarlyBrands) by Philrob

    • Snetterton 1964 by Bill Guillaume/N2LO
    • Thruxton 1960s by sunalp2/lasercutter
  • New and Fixed Championships...
    • Added 1962 British Saloon Car Championship with all rounds and tracks
    • Expanded 1961 BSCC with all rounds and tracks and made fixes
    • Expanded 1970 BSCC with all rounds and tracks and made fixes
Future Plans:
  • British Saloon Car Championship (BSCC) Group 2 from 1961 through 1973
  • British Saloon Car Championship (BSCC) Group 5 from 1966 through 1969
  • European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) Group 2 from 1963 through 1981
  • I welcome all contributions such as championships, 24H races, new AI drivers, track AI optimizations (AIWs), etc. I might have to get permission for some changes but will try my best to get them included in future releases.
Crowd-sourced Contributions:

I'll be including contributions guidelines in the next release README to help encourage consistency and immersion with a clean, clear, polished in-game experience.

Historical Accuracy:
  • Don't expect 100% historical accuracy as there is only so much we can do with what's available
  • Some tracks might not be period-correct
  • Some layouts might not be available for the period (ie. 60s/70s Brands Hatch Indy)
  • Only using the AI Drivers that are in Power & Glory right now although somebody could add those for period and championship-correct drivers
  • I'll be happy if the general era ambience is there and I can be immersed in a historical racing experience
Help Wanted:

Here are some areas I've noticed where Power & Glory and the content this mod brings in could be improved upon by someone with the right interest and skill-set:
  • AI Enhancements: AI are pretty good but lines could be better for P&G AI that aren't used to the new tracks.
  • New AI Drivers: Add in era and championship-correct AI drivers
  • Add/Update Historic Tracks: Some tracks don't exist, some tracks are the wrong era and could be retrofitted to be era-correct, some tracks exist with one layout but missing another (Ex. EarlyBrands has GP layout but not Indy)
  • Enhance Track Graphics: Reduce object pop-in, increase frame rate, improve draw distance for all views including mirrors, replace/improve track-side objects/billboards that might be out-of-era
  • Enhance Power & Glory Car Graphics: The graphics are aging a little bit and could use some improvements like sharper textures or higher poly counts.
  • Add Championships and 24H Races: Make your favourite championship!
This is a preview of a README section with instructions on how to make championships.

Feedback welcome! Particularly about how this can be improved to help people new to making championships jump in and learn.

How to Contribute Historic Championships

You can help contribute historic championships and it's pretty easy, actually.

I'd like to encourage crowd-sourced historic championships instead of taking on that role myself as I could never cover more than a fraction of series out there.

Contact me if you created a championship for Power & Glory. I'd be happy to include it in the mod.

Overview:
1. Find Championship Details
2. Create the Description, Schedule, and Graphic (Optional)
3. Copy Files Into GTR2 Folder and Play!

Once you get rolling, and get used to how things function, you'll probably be able to write a full historic championship and be driving it in less than an hour.

Steps:

1. Find Championship Details

For example, details on the 1961 British Saloon Car Championship can be found here:

Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20220610002544/http://touringcarracing.net/Pages/BSCC.html

You can find details that you will use in the Schedule and Description files. For example, for the first 1961 BSCC race at Snetteron you can find details such as:

- Circuit (Ex. Snetterton, Great-Britain)
- Date (Ex. March 25, 1961)
- Starters / Finishers
- Distance in Laps or Time (Ex. 15 laps)
- Weather (Ex. Dry)
- Classes (Ex. Class, A and B)
- Heats (Ex. Heat 1 and 2)
- Grids with positions, car models, driver names, etc

Depending on your source, you might have all or some of this information. The vital parts are the circuit and distance. The rest is nice to have to gain more realism.

Find your own championship details by simply doing a web search or perhaps ask on your favourite forum.

2. Create the Description, Schedule, and Graphic (Optional)

2.1 The Championship TXT Description File

This is a plain-text file you can edit in any editor (Ex. the free Notepad++) and simply contains a plain-written description of the championship.

See \GameData\Championships\Official\BRSCC_1961.txt for an example.

Formatting tags are available. For example, here are a few:

Code:
    <SET_FONT>
    FT_LISTBOX_HEADER

    <DRIVER_NAME>
    <BEST_FINISH>
    <CHAMP_STATUS>
    <SET_FONT>
    FT_LISTBOX_RED_SMALL
    <TOUNLOCK>
    <SET_FONT>
    FT_LISTBOX_HEADER
    <DRIVER_POSITION>
    <NEXT_ROUND>

The example above sets the font to FT_LISTBOX_HEADER and then, if you've run a race, dynamically fills in your driver name, your best finish, the championship status, your position, and details about the next round.

This example was taken from \GameData\Championships\Official\BRSCC_1961.txt Open it for yourself and see what it's like.

Other tags are available, as well. Use other Championship TXT files from Power & Glory and GTR2 for reference to what you can do, too.

Once you've learned to see and separate the tags from the text it becomes very easy.

2.2 The Championship GDB Schedule File

This is a plain-text file you can edit in any editor (Ex. the free Notepad++) and contains parameters that define a championship, such as car/class/ai filters, championship description, AI strength/realism, race rules, scoring, races and their circuit, practice/qualify/race parameters, weather, and more.

See \GameData\Championships\Official\BRSCC_1961.gdb for an example.

An example of the top few lines of the 1961 BSCC Championship GDB Schedule File:

Code:
    // Copied from 60's Sportscar Championship.gdb
    // Schedule based on 1961 British Saloon Car Championship: http://touringcarracing.net/Pages/1961%20BSCC.html
    // Custom Championships
    Game Name = 1961 British Saloon Car Championship
    Game Filter = AND: Gr2 AND: TC60
    Selection Filter = AND: Gr2 AND: TC60
    AI Filter = AND: Gr2 AND: TC60
    Description = The 1961 British Saloon Car Championship featured Group 2 cars and raced historic British tracks.

The lines including "AND:" allow you to filter on car classes which are defined in CAR files in \GameData\Teams\ folder. For example, \GameData\Teams\Power&Glory\60's Touring\Abarth 1000TC\67015\67015_tc60_abarth1000tc.car.

Gr2 stands for Group 2 and TC60 stands for 60's Touring Cars. Only cars from this group, class, and era are tagged in this way using the classes="..." parameter in CAR files.

If unsure, use Windows Explorer and search the GTR2 \GameData\Teams\ folder for *.CAR and open some or all of the files in an editor like Notepad++ and then look at each classes="..." line to see what tags they have (classes is usually at the bottom of each CAR file).

An example of the "SceneOrder" which defines the Locations (circuits) and the practice/qualify/race parameters for that round:

Code:
    SceneOrder
    {
        // Snetterton Lombard Trophy (March 3, 1961)
        64snett
         {
          TestDayDay = Wednesday
          TestDayStart = 6:30
          Practice1Day = Friday
          Practice1Start = 10:00
          Qualify1Day = Saturday
          Qualify1Start = 9:00
          WarmupDay = Sunday
          WarmupStart = 9:10
          RaceDay = Sunday
          RaceStart = 14:30
          RaceLaps = 15
          RaceTime = 30
          Weather=1 // Weather: 0=changable, 1=dry, 2=rain, 3=monsoon
          StartMode=Standing
          Max Vehicles=24
         }

         // Aintree International 200 Meeting (April 22, 1961)
        Aintree
         {
          TestDayDay = Wednesday
          TestDayStart = 9:00
          Practice1Day = Friday
          ...
         }

         ...
     }

The labels "64snett" and "Aintree" refer to the GTR2 \GameData\Locations\*\*.GDB filename. For example, "Aintree" in \GameData\Locations\Aintree\Aintree.gdb.

2.3 The Championship TGA Graphic File

This is an optional image file that can be created/edited in Gimp or Photoshop and can be included in the Description file.

You can include the TGA file in a Description file with the following code:

Code:
    <CHAMP_ICON_CENTERED>

Note: I had trouble exporting these files in Gimp in a compatible way for GTR2. If anyone knows how to properly make and edit these files please let me know.

2.4 Championship File Naming

The GDB and TXT should be named the same except for their extension.

The TGA file should use the same name with "_ICON" appended and retaining the TGA extension.

Examples:

Code:
    BRSCC_1961.gdb
    BRSCC_1961.txt
    BRSCC_1961_ICON.jpg

3. Copy Files Into GTR2 Folder and Play!

Copy GDB, TXT, and TGA files to your GTR2 \GameData\Championships\Official\ folder then launch GTR2 and play!

That's it. It's really pretty straightforward and, once you know the rules and quirks, you can make new championships pretty easily.
