I got bored a week ago and decided to add a little twist to an existing skin. However, this has led me into the rabbit hole of hours searching on Google of every single reference photos I could find on the #2 and #6 cars.
The slight lack of visual detail the cars has also got me a little annoyed. So while I was at it, I added some extra details, from the mil-spec ports, the switchboard, down to the little hex bolts, bring both the Gulf GTC McLarens alive once again, albeit in the virtual realm.
One of the biggest challenges is to replicate the reddish-orangey appearance the cars had. In some pictures, the cars appear to have a fluorescent orange tone, while in others, the livery appears orange. What brought me close to insanity is seeing the car in action in old BPR footages, but I finally figured that the orange is redder than the original skin. That duality has been replicated in-game, especially if you have Custom Shaders Patch and SOL installed.
As the cherry on the proverbial cupcake, each car gets its own matching chassis numbers found here https://supercarnostalgia.com/index-mclaren-f1-gtr-chassis-numbers.
What I have learnt is that the original Kunos skin is not a bad skin at all, in fact, it is just a matter of filling up the blanks. And considering that it has been made within a limited time -- and probably legal constraints --, you can imagine what the team is able to do if they had all the time in the world and no limits given.
Anyway, to install, simply unzip and drop them into assettocorsa\content\cars\ks_mclaren_f1_gtr\skins\.
Enjoy!
