G&J Kartway 2024 v0.2

Originally opened in 1958 as a dirt track, G&J Kartway is one of the US's oldest operational karting tracks and was the founding place of the WKA. Its resident club, OVKA, has been holding races at the track since 1964. The track was recently repaved during the off season between 2023 and 2024. It features two main layouts, with the long layout having an optional chicane, and the final corner complex can be configured in one of three ways for a total of 9 layouts. The track is also occasionally run in reverse.



This model is being built with the assistance of photogrammetry technology. I used my DJI Mini 2 to take just short of 800 photos of the track from the air from various altitudes and angles to capture a model of the whole site, which I then processed into various reference datasets for my use in modeling it in Blender for both Assetto Corsa and Kart Racing Pro.

The model is quite simplistic in its present state. I like releasing models in this state to gather feedback on the feel of the surface so that I can tune it well before proceeding with modeling the rest of the environment. According to all accounts I have heard, the new track surface is super smooth and not overly grippy. The photogrammetry data isn't perfect, especially considering that the relatively flat and even visual texture of the new asphalt doesn't give the photogrammetry engine much to go off of, unlike the 2021 scan I did previously.
