I have had this car mod from a creator whose name rhymes with "Region" on my hard drive for ages, but I could never bring myself to use it since I can't stand the fictional skins that came with it. As a fan of the World Sportscar Championship with a curiosity about this car, I had to give a real livery a shot.
I chose to do this skin for this race since the model features the wing and, as far as I'm aware, this was the only time the high wing was used on the P68 in competition before the FIA banned them mid-season. Thankfully, there were just enough pictures that I did not have to do any guesswork to figure out what was what or where things went on this specific car at this event.
The 1969 Brands Hatch 6 Hours was a rough one for Alan Mann Racing. The P68 had not been kind to the team the year prior, as the car was quite difficult to drive and plagued by mechanical and electrical issues. Two cars entered, P68-1003 & the new P69-01, the latter of which failed to make it onto the grid due to "engine issues" (in reality, Jack Brabham found the car's handling so bad in practice he refused to drive it). Ultimately, the P69 never saw competition. The former, the car depicted here, did not fare much better. Plagued by rear-end lift at high speeds, the team fitted a massive rear wing directly onto the rear suspension assembly, which helped to get the car more on pace with the dominant Porsche 908s, albeit barely. The car started the race in 7th but mechanical gremlins struck once again and the team retired on lap 14 due to low oil pressure.
The team later entered the car in the AMOC Martini Trophy at Silverstone, but rain during practice fritzed the electronics and the car couldn't start the race. The FIA then banned high wings and, since they stood no chance against the competition without it (or even with it, frankly), Alan Mann Racing withdrew from their future races and mothballed the P68 once and for all.
