When we talk about a concept car, we often talk about notes of intention, test for future products, a vision of what a manufacturer has in store for us.
And in all these proposals, designers seek to reinvent an identity,
to draw the next faces of the brand, with the consecration that the concept car becomes reality, in the form of a working concept or a line that will be found for years to come.
But when Renault, in full promotion of the Renault Espace in 1994, joined forces with Matra to celebrate the Formula 1 success of Renault Sport,
no one was ready for a racing minivan. And it was in this collective hallucination that the Renault Espace F1 was created. A concept car out of all automotive common sense and surprisingly efficient.
At the first look, it seems like a chimera assembling a 1995 F1 engine under a Renault Espace bodywork actually reveals a terrifying machine,
offering nearly 800 horsepower in the form of an atmospheric V10 engine with an antique Formula 1 feel. Sprinkle this base with a Willams FW14C rear suspension and Venturi Le Mans suspensions, and you'll get the wacky but real definition of a minivan doing 0 to 100 in 2.9 s.
This is a very high center of gravity that makes every turn dangerous.
A Formula 1 "hidden" in a van, which has only had two public outings in the hands of Alain Prost and Jean Ragnotti, remained in all memories by the madness of his principle, and also by his hallucinating performances in Gran Turismo 2.
However, this mythical machine is experiencing a rather surprising renaissance, in the person of Franck Galiègue, presenter of the Youtube channel "Movie Cars Central". When the latter does not present its latest findings in terms of of automobiles used in Hollywood movies, he secretly reconstructs a copy, certainly with some adjustments, but which retains the same madness as the 1995 proposal. If you want to see by yourself if the Espace F1 is a collective hallucination of car manufacturers,
or a unique attempt to marry two automotive logics that were never destined to meet, so turn on this engine and sound the 10-cylinder bagpipe behind your seat. No other vehicle will give you this feeling.
Drive the world's first ever virtual Espace F1 created from high-resolution 3d laser scans, taking realism to a whole new level.
